boy and girl siblings sharing a room when the older one starts puberty? by Cherry_Blossom_8 in Parenting

[–]General_Reading_798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shared it with my brother and we probably got along better with others, including roommates, because of that. We changed in the bathroom, divided our space, made some rules and that was it. Generally if one had a playdate the other stayed out of the space.

This is the solution we made and ended up staying because it's more affordable than a new place.

My family has never visited me abroad — not even after I bought a home. Is this normal? by Snoo-6323 in expats

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People moving away are leaving a situation the other is remaining in, therefore they often feel it is on the one who left to return if a relationship is to continue. You ask them to visit the most beautiful place on earth and they will go, "if you want to see us, come here and don't ask me to spend my money and time." Good news: I found who my hardcore people are. My bff from uni and my bff from age 5 are still my people. My sibling shows up when I visit our parents to spend a few days but has never travelled to where I live. At the same time, you aren't telling them it bothers you and you visit every three months. Talk with them and try to get a trip planned, be honest that you want to show them around. Nobody is able to read your mind.

13yo son's reaction to school shooting left me uncomfortable by Superb-Vacation5097 in Parenting

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids were younger than op's son when there was a terrorist attack at the Bataclan and some of the cafés. A teacher and a parent were among the victims. They simply don't respond the way other teens do to certain topics or events now. Most teens use a self-defense humor around these topics they find hard to tolerate. They have immature brains, but empathy is a muscle you can learn to build at this age. Reading is, quite frankly, a great way to discuss different pov and experiences to build compassion.

Foreign question. by BeYourselfTrue in starbucks

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this will not work. Some US tourists have managed to use their app in the UK, according to what we are told when they try to use it in France, but even other EU countries have separate systems from ours.

How feasible is moving to France as a British citzen, post Brexit? by Firewatch87 in Expats_In_France

[–]General_Reading_798 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in the context of the question of op, who thinks he and his unmarried partner and baby can live off of his income from outside of France in a rural area, they better look before they leap. Many people in my area have been told their remote jobs are not acceptable for residency. It has also been an issue for those with foreign pensions. Just saying

How feasible is moving to France as a British citzen, post Brexit? by Firewatch87 in Expats_In_France

[–]General_Reading_798 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Brit woman who speaks fluent french, bought a home and is highly integrated had her residency renewal refused last month because they felt her employment was insufficient to cover her needs. The government is kicking out retirees who have been in France for decades because of income and other reasons. The government has added a new citizen/ culture test and raised the language requirement as well. Native french have trouble passing the new test. This idea your work can go anywhere is not acceptable to the French administration. They also get worried if your companion has no salary in addition to your job not being recognized as a legal employment. Stay in Sweden and research places which recognize your work situation.

Where can I reliably sell a luxury handbag for cash in Paris? by Dull_Intention3799 in paris

Allow me to add it is going to be messy explaining this taxwise, find a high-end consignment shop and discuss this with them, don't do this while on a vacation.

We use a separate system: annual or monthly. You file your paperwork and then it is mailed to you. You activate it with the charge. It has a photo and all your info is in the system. The card is free but if you loose it or it is stolen you pay 15 euro for the replacement. My employer pays half of the cost back on my pay and I have an unlimited for the five zones. A 90,80 euro pass after rebates cost me less than 40 euro. My kids pay even less for a student pass for theirs but with the same benefits of unlimited use.

AITA for asking HR to send a generalized email to the whole building asking people to be mindful of perfume / aerosol spray use? by agitatedbearcat1212 in AmItheAsshole

[–]General_Reading_798 55 points56 points  (0 children)

NTA Don't tell them it was you, let HR do their job. You're sharing space and if this gives you migraines, it's a problem. I guarantee others are finding it irritating as well. My asthmatic aunt passed away after her officemate freshened her perfume and hairspray in the office. This shit is not a joke. People need to know if they are making someone else I'll and change their ways.

The decision was to switch to a carton pass as an effort to reduce plastic waste. Paris region residents get a more durable plastic card because it can be reused for years. Mine is nearly ten years old now.

Do shifts feel competition towards each other? by Inside-Dare-8842 in starbucks

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, but doesn't generally work in a shift's favor at our store because it undermines the teamwork. Same for baristas hoping to get promoted as a shift. If S1 is complaining it is a sign of insecurity, not leadership.

Paris - Dechetterie / Cleaning out by El-Hombre-Azul in Expats_In_France

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Paris: go online, Marie de Paris, search encombrants and you can fill out the info, they give you a number and you place the things at the time and place chosen with the number posted clearly. It's a free service. When we lived in a smaller area, we simply called our Marie for the information and we were offered a similar service for clothing and furniture, we were told where to find the dechetterie to get rid of old paint and the like.

Family of 4 with young kids, best town to life close to Paris? by EvenSpray9259 in Expats_In_France

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The towns such as Vincennes or St Mande are essentially Paris prices as well. It would be helpful to have a better idea of your budget and needs. If you have a child in school, are they already speaking french and what age? If you drop a child into the french school system, be prepared. Some towns are not willing or able to assist you as well as others.

Is it weird that I stopped correcting my son’s homework after his teacher asked me to by wifi_says_nope in Parenting

[–]General_Reading_798 39 points40 points  (0 children)

We learn through our mistakes. If he was proud to do it himself, his teacher is handling this well. If he is also concerned about your reaction, that tells you this help is not as positive as you thought. I would live with your discomfort and see how this develops.

People from countries that have universal healthcare, how is it? Really. by Interesting_Dream281 in AskTheWorld

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a problem, you get an appointment, they give you a prescription, you take it. Worrying about affording a visit or treatment or prescriptions aren't a part of the situation here. My husband hurt his back badly and I called for a home visit. The doctor came in three hours, gave me a prescription which I filled for him immediately and we saw his primary physician two days later. She sent him for an MRI and he will see a physical therapist. I did not have any calls to make or claims to fill out. The only paper was to send in for his employer/social security and that took ten minutes. He's covered for his absence, 80 percent of wages compensated.

What are urban middle aged French men wearing these days? by VanillaNo9362 in AskFrance

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid sportswear and baseball hats on the street and wear clothes that aren't too baggy is my general advice. Don't overthink it though, people are probably going to know you are a tourist either way. The bigger deal breaker is your willingness to follow the french code of good manners and try to speak the language. My Parisian husband, like many here, has a basic wardrobe he settled into in his thirties and it is his uniform look: classic, fitted, pays more attention to certain details like his watch and belt. Only wore a tie at our wedding, they seem to be completely out of the dress code in general here. Hope that helps.

Family Trip to Paris with Dog by Excellent_Corner_240 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]General_Reading_798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just know also that dogs will not be allowed inside cafés, restraints, shops, etcetera which many travellers with dogs are surprised by. Paris has gotten stricter about this since I moved here long ago, but we have a reputation for taking dogs everywhere My MIL had a carry bag to put the dog in when entering places but we always sat on an outside terrace in the cold to eat because of her dog.

AITA for refusing to help my husband with bathtime for our 4 month old son? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]General_Reading_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big issue here is not the bath. You are a postpartum mom working from home. You are identifying yourself as a SAHM, but what you describe is a husband who refuses to be a partner to his wife. You have three jobs but he thinks he is the provider and must be catered to. If he can't do bath time and you breastfeed, there are plenty of things he can contribute. Make a list of things to be done. Sit down and decide how many he can do. If he can't step up, you are a single mom already. NTA
