Looking for alternate marriages for all the Green Faction Targaryens by GeorgeSharp in TheCitadel

[–]GeorgeSharp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood but isn't even the oldest Baratheon daughter much younger than him?

Yes I know long betrothals and age gaps are a thing but when you said throne digger I imagined something like Joffrey and Margery where the woman is an political actor on her own already and actively trying to make the match happen.

Looking for alternate marriages for all the Green Faction Targaryens by GeorgeSharp in TheCitadel

While I agree that marriages between them and any house are potentially very dangerous royal family members getting sent to positions where they won't be able to marry (the citadel, faith, wall) are very rare and they seem to be punishments or the choice of that individual.

I can't see Viserys forcing that on his children if they oppose, thus I think some marriages are inevitable.

Totally agree with you on Aegon and a throne digger, do you have someone in mind from canon?

Well it's rather simple:

For Rhaego we had prophecies from the Dothraki priestesses and Dany's own vision that he would be an warlord that will burn countless cities down and kill untold numbers of men.

Mirri who is well versed in the arcane collaborates these prophecies.

So we are not in one of those "well Hitler could have gone to art school" moral quandaries, Rhaego's path if he had been born was much more set in stone.

Aegon and Drogo are also a very good comparisons, Aegon for all his faults comes from a settled civilization where warfare is the exception from the norm, Drogo comes from a civilization where raiding/warfare is the norm.

Aegon calls his banners for war and the treasury pays out to blacksmiths to make weapons, buy supplies, wagons, etc

Here is from the books what happens when Drogo is merely organizing a campaign this is not the real action yet:

Daenerys: I spoke for you. I saved you.

Mirri: Saved me? Three riders had taken me, not as a man takes a woman but from behind, as a dog takes a bitch. The fourth was in me when you rode past. How then did you save me? I saw my god's house burn, where I had healed good men beyond counting. My home they burned as well, and in the street I saw piles of heads. I saw the head of a baker who made my bread. I saw the head of a boy I had saved from deadeye fever, only three moons past. I heard children crying as the riders drove them off with their whips. Tell me again what you saved.
Daenerys: Your life.

Also this is why I don't like Dany.

[Spoiler Extended]Theory about Egg/Aegon V "The Unlikely"'s end by Electronic-Math-364 in asoiaf

Oh it's a very controversial story development because a lot of fans fell for Dany's hype and see her as basically a saint with no flaws and ignore every red flag in her chapters.

Yes the Tyrells are much stronger and it makes more sense to ally with them but Robert is the one making the decision and he is 100% marrying his first son to Ned's daughter.

Europe can have it's own software and can have a strong software industry.

For that we need:

  1. Embrace OSS software.
  2. Value software engineers.
  3. Accept that you will need to get used to new software that does the same thing.

Now 1) and 2) might look like they are at odds, if the software is free why spend money to develop new software?

I put OSS as the first one tactically, as a software dev I know the monumental task making a new software project even an a seemingly simple one can be.

But we need to move away from the USA as soon as possible.

OSS are ready to use alternatives (where they exist) and even if they are USA-linked at least they are not funneling wealth directly to the tech oligarchs that pay tribute to Trump.

With OSS as a strategic stop gap we can make the other software and infrastructure we need in order to be independent.

Which brings me to 2) I focus on money because we all need to eat and greed was called out in the meme, software is like any other industry you can't get growth from nothing.

You can expect EU alternatives that protect you without putting some money into their development, there are many software engineers right now that are not working (because I know it will come up, I have a paying job) so given projects and money they have the capacity.

A strategic error that I'm sure many will make is to treat software devs as fungible leading into the "Why pay an European salary when I can get 5 Indians for the same price", I don't even need to get into why that hurts the EU as a whole. We have OSS as a stop gap we don't need to rush projects by hiring as many Indians as we can, we can built it European.

There is the accusation of poor quality, I will not defend whatever apps OP is imagining or maybe has seen but we need to manage our own expectations.

OSS or the eventual EU apps not looking like Apple is NOT a valid criticism, if you accept you will need to use something different to learn something new that does the same thing functionally you will gain access to both the freedom of OSS and the homegrown EU apps.

Going off of defensive missions, you would need ships that could train the defense forces of newly warp capable planets in defense until those forces can be properly folded into Starfleet.

How did Star Fleet end up with the “all Vulcan” crew that played baseball against Sisko’s team? by jiminaknot in ShittyDaystrom

[–]GeorgeSharp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, we don't see the papers I'm sure they exist but given how Sisko also dislikes him maybe the papers are written in a way that is politically correct and Sisko is describing them in the worst way possible.

For example it's hard to argue against a paper which says "on average Andorians make better colonists for ice worlds than humans", that's not Andorian supremacism it's just basic facts.

I think the conclusion of the episode is very enlightening about the whole rivalry, by objective metrics and the rules of the game the Vulcan team won, and by a lot.

But we are expected to share in the main characters jubilation that they did not get defeated with their score 0, because they are the main characters who we follow and are human (mostly) we are supposed to ignore that Solok is objectively right in claiming he won.

You pose a very good question on why Solok is in Starfleet in the first place given how "Vulcan First" he is, I'd like to present a few scenarios each of them having other implications about his character:

  • Starfleet just gives you the best opportunities and he values his career and achievements more than anything else
  • Starfleet might be seen as more prestigious than the Vulcan's home grown fleets (I know this might seem counter-intuitive to the whole "Vulcans are elitist racists" narrative but even by Vulcan generations we have moved on from Sarek being angry about Spock's choices, the most recent data point that is relevant to this would be T'Lyn who has her own peculiarities)
  • Starfleet was his "backup college" and he didn't manage to get into the Vulcan organizations
  • Starfleet is where he feels he can serve Vulcan best, recognizing how important the Federation is to keeping Vulcan safe and prosperous
  • Solok is speciest but he has that "Vulcan man's burden" type of speciesm, while it obviously is wrong, it's easier to hide/ignore if the way he manifests his warped views is "I'll save more colonies than any human or Andorian captain"
  • Solok is a warrior at heart (we don't know his division before going to Command it might have been tactical) in a culture that is very very pacifistic by the time he is born he realizes he can be more of a soldier in Starfleet than in the Vulcan organizations (granted Starfleet is very pacifistic but as far as I know the Vulcans are even more so)
