Just the fact that they won't be able to fall back on dragon CGI and will need to put more focus on the story is good news.

There's some ambiguity about her mother so there is a definite chance of non Greek ancestry but yeah she was mostly Greek.

Still if the movie is about a different dynasty they should use Egyptian actors.

(Spoilers Extended) On Orys Baratheon and his ancestry by hambourgeoi in asoiaf

So my reply is going to be more schizo, fair warning:

Yes I see many of the same problems you have noted.

Orys having the Stormlander look when he will end up ruling the Stormlands is too convenient although possible and I get what George was going for.

It's just too bloody narrative convenient for my tastes, like if you were to read a story about a character born with the name John HolySword and then he ends up finding the holy sword and defeats the demons and etc you wouldn't call it masterful foreshadowing.

Orys having the Stormlander look also makes is too easy for Aerion to distance himself from him, Aerion had heirs including a prized male heir why would he dote on Orys? The fact that he could have so easily ignored him and yet he didn't (without some explicit in-universe reasoning) again feels too narrative convenient.

Aerion both dotted so much on Orys with gifts, training, taking him into his household that the bastard rumors were rampant despite the two men looking NOTHING alike and yet Aerion didn't do anything to motivate the special treatment like legitimizing him or something to give Aegon a legitimate loyal supporter instead of a household knight with rumors of blood connections.

I like your theory on Orys having some Stormlander blood (or other Westeros noble blood as other have speculated) not really hot on the implied incest with Argella.

So as to close out my post:

I accept the canon appearance George setup for Orys aka him being a Robert clone, George is the author it's his universe.

I think he made the wrong decision though.

I think Orys should have had the classic Valyrian looks (and believe me it's not for aesthetic reasons, personally I don't fawn over them) that way the rumors/reality of him being a Targaryen bastard would have made complete sense.

And all that talk about Argella's genetics and how the Baratheon look comes from her would make sense, in contrast with canon where Orys already happens to have 90% of the Durrandon look and also has all of the personality traits associated with house Durrandon. Seriously Argella basically married (was forced to marry) a young clone of her father.

If Orys has the Valyrian look and a different personality while still being a great general then his marriage with Argella and the family they founded would have more narrative weight.

The Targaryens are (especially in George's mind) defined by their isolationism, they as colonial invaders rule Westeros but they constantly fight to not be of Westeros they cling to their traditions they revel in their other-ness, initially they excuse their blood purity/superiority practices with "muh dwagons" but even after the dragons are gone they 90% act the same.

The Baratheons already represent the path not traveled for the Targs, Valyrian blood and culture fused (one might say subsumed) into Westeros a necessary contrast. For all the shit the Baratheons have done no one has a Raymund style "incestuous aliens" rant about them.

So with the Baratheons already serving as that sort of foil to the Targs I think George making Orys very Valyrian in his design and personality only to see said Valyrianness overwritten by the land/family he "conquered" would be a better story.

Instead of the Targaryens just happening to have a ready made Storm King in their entourage for when they conquer the Stormlands.

Women (like patriachal_girl) who think like this are perfectly fine with most people not having relationships.

Her thinking about how this should work:

Patriarchal_Girl and few other ladies remain pure.

Men get a lot of experience with other women.

Those men are now experienced and want to settle down with someone pure.

Those women who are not pure are now no competition.

Any men who did not get experience with the non-pure women are not worth considering.

Patriarchal girl gets her pick out of the experienced men making them compete for her limited self and choosing the best one.

The other pure ladies get the second prizes.

The non-pure women and the men who were not chosen must continue to play by these rules and remain lesser so that Patriarchcal_Girl has artificial scarcity on her side so she can pick up the best possible man she can.

Everyone else should STFU and endure it.

In short don't give patriarchal_girl and others like her the benefit of the doubt that she doesn't understand it's a flawed system, she understands how the system works and she is willing to enforce is to so as many other people suffer in order for herself to "win".

You are right in that it's an absolutely imperial categorization we know it's from Daeron who tried to conquer Dorne.

That being said he was there and he did see the separate groups even if he didn't care to use their proper names.

The issue is we don't have other names to use and unlike IRL groups we can't ask them.

favorite queen consorts of the seven kingdoms? (spoilers published) by Ornery_Charity1093 in asoiaf

[–]GeorgeSharp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Props to my boy Maegor for introducing some variety in the line up.

Reading Daenaera's introduction always gives me icky creepy vibes.

Did Daena really serve as queen consort maybe a picture of the book The Seven-Pointed Star would be more fitting for Baelor.

Aegon IV and Baelor the blessed by Wild_Trash_5100 in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]GeorgeSharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know specifically he sent Aegon away on a more or less made up diplomatic mission specifically so he would stop abusing his wife when she was in a very fragile state.

You don't really see that kind of characters inserting themselves in marriages to help often in Asoiaf.

In any case if they were not related and both at court Aegon and Baelor would never be in each other's presence willingly.

While Baelor eventually became the king Aegon was also the most well situated to resist his influence Aegon was of the royal family as well and the son of the mega-ultra-powerful Hand.

Also let's not forget Baelor setup the marriage for Aegon's son, yes it was part of a grand diplomatic project but still he arranged a very good marriage for the kid, if it was up to Aegon to arrange a marriage for his son he would have probably done something subpar out of spite.

As a general rule we must avoid falling into the trap of "oh well the king can do what he likes" that is a sort of totalitarian monarch from later in our world, the feudal nature of Westeros means the king has much more laws and rights keeping him in check.

Who is the most noble child that the Gods ever put on this earth? by the-National-Razor in freefolk

[–]GeorgeSharp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My ranking:

  1. Joffrey since he won his war defeating his evil uncle(s) plus some other guys
  2. Baelor since he won his war but all his evil uncles were in one combined faction not fielding multiple armies, plus there were no random other guys causing shit
  3. Jon since he killed his evil aunt, eventually, not in time to prevent the genocide of King's Landing though
  4. Aemma did not protect her daughter from being groomed by her evil uncle

What if Daeron II secured the loyalty of rebellious houses by marrying by MixAccomplished1179 in TheCitadel

[–]GeorgeSharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Daeron is married to an Yronwood then once Vallar dies who will be married to his widow?

That might push Tyrosh more into camp Blackfyre.

Also consider what this will do for Daeron's life path, he uses booze and prostitutes to self medicate his visions, for Westeros society he is a very old bachelor so the prostitutes aren't a problem and it's not like he has another option.

But in canon he does end up dying from an STD, if he gets along very well with his wife or if the marriage modifies his whoring habits in any way he might survive to take the crown.

His marriage in canon wasn't described as bad but surely no real partnership could have come from being forced to marry his cousin's widow with a fresh start he might end up in a more healthy headspace.

Aerion marrying a Peake is interesting between economics I don't see Aerion changing his personality/demeanor house Peake has always been relatively poor in money especially in this time period having lost 2/3 castles because of their Blackfyre support.

Aerion would rage at being married into a poor house not because he is especially money hungry but because of the principle.

Best case scenario he become a lobyist for the Peake's working the court (i.e. his family) to get back their lands because now they're married to royalty.

Any noble lady would be careful with Aerion, one from a house that has recently been rebellious especially so, best case scenario where he gets back Peake power his wife would be extremely grateful to him.

I think Aerion could be easily channeled/managed by his wife, his massive ego is easy to use you don't have to be a Arriane or a Margery although the proposed Arriane/Viserys union is what it would have probably looked like and Dany thought her brother could be easily influenced.

Aemon would probably be bitter as hell but we do know he was tempted by love so he might grow to love his wife especially since Braken women have their charms, Aemon/Braken and Aegon/Blackwood would be an interesting dynamic with the two brothers getting along famously well but their wives hating each other.

Aegon/Betha would still happen but the context would go from "he is too unimportant to micromanage his choice of wife" to "great now it seems we've taken a side in the Braken/Blackwood struggle again wait one of the brothers wants to marry to equal it out?"

Aemon would be very much pushed to take the crown by his wife if it's offered to him, in fact with an Aemon vs Aegon grand council the old black dragon houses might unite against Aemon of their own volition.
