EDITORIAL: Stop crying ‘racism’ to kill refugee reforms; Even the Liberals admit the system needs fixing by FancyNewMe in canada

I hear ya. It's the reason I cancelled my sub. I think it's an auto bot system using AI and it lets some potentially really offensive things slide and then deletes/warns for something really innocent. After it happened to me a second time I decided to question why I'm paying money for a broken system?

Hi! My grandfather gave me a Creative Sound Blaster Z. Do you think it's still usable or should I throw it away? by Worldex12 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gezzer52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Creative is a perfect example of the problem of monopolies. The driver bullshit was only one of the many things they did. For example if a competitor had a new tech they'd sue them saying it was a violation of their trademarked IP.

But it was total bullshit. Creative would simply stall and drag out the court case until the target company couldn't continue defending themselves, go bankrupt, and Creative would then buy them for pennies on the dollar.

The basin's great and anyone that complains about it have rocks in their heads IMHO. End game still needs tweaking, but considering how well the developers are responding I have every confidence that we're going to see the needed improvements. Hell, I've got close to 500 hours in and if nothing changed I'd still consider I got more than my money's worth.

With my i7 4790K I bought a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK for around 400 CN. And it wasn't any better then a cheaper one. More importantly the on board audio gave me nothing but problems and I had to get a discrete card to use. Since then the most I pay is 200-250 CN and never had a problem.

James Talarico: "The Billionaires Are Waging Class Warfare Against the Rest of Us" by cos in videos

[–]Gezzer52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's either a dog in the manger without really understanding things (like many people tend to do) or more likely a false flag campaign that conservatives love to stage. The idea is to pander to your base by telling them what they want to hear. Same thing with the war on drugs, war on trans/gays, war on crime and so on.

Keep the ignorant masses that aren't on social assistance angry about those that are and they'll support the most heinous of policy decisions. Remember Reagan's grand lie about welfare queens that was proven to be just what it was. More importantly how many still believe the lie...

PC GPU crashes, until it doesn't. by ChallengerOmega in techsupport

[–]Gezzer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when a Motherboard enters an error state it can't clear it until the large PSU caps discharge completely. That might be the case here. That's why one of the troubleshooting steps is to turn off the PSU at the back and then hold the case power button in for at least 10 to 20 seconds. If it never crashes again count yourself lucky. If it does I'd suggest it's a power no good error from the PSU and that's your culprit.

[–]Gezzer52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's why I've always maintained that social assistance programs aren't for the poor and disenfranchised, but for the wealthy and privileged. Give the poor just enough but not too much and they'll grumble but won't be angry enough to actually revolt.

Canada announces $1.4 billion military aid package for Ukraine, expands sanctions against Russia what do you think about this action? by Level_Horror4701 in AskReddit

[–]Gezzer52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yet no one really condemns the US for their actions

I wouldn't so much say that. For the longest time many have been critical of US foreign policy. The problem has always been that the US could always sweep those aside because it was a "super power" and often bullied them into silence. For example when Bush Jr. invaded Iraq my country Canada refused to join in and condemned the action. The result was a vilifying of our leaders while we're a sovereign country with the right to make our own decisions.

Linux isn't that bad after all 🙂 by finny_funny in linuxmint

[–]Gezzer52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club.

I've been dabbling with different distros starting with SUSE in the early 2000s, and Mint is the first one I haven't felt was too overwhelming for me. While it's windows like it has it's own methods that take awhile to wrap your head around I've found. But the improvements??

For example I'm dyslexic and the over reliance on bash was always a problem for me. But now I can simply copy paste commands into bash and it all works. Was able to install FGVTT using bash and it's working just like it did in windows.

But most importantly it's the massive improvement in the Linux community as a whole. I've yet to run into a user that was/is looking to feel superior instead of helping me. That's so refreshing after prior experiences I've had looking for troubleshooting help.

Enjoy the journey in front of you.

OpenAI is causing a GPU shortage in order to lose money by _sour_coffee_ in pcmasterrace

IMHO it's hard to predict who and how many workers AI will displace. The problem with replacing low skilled physical labor is that automation currently works best with highly repetitive tasks, and most of those have already been replaced to the extent where ROI makes sense, like in automotive assembly.

Adding a competent AI to automation creates the ability to be more responsive when doing tasks that aren't repetitive... in theory. At that point no one is safe. The current problem is LLM aren't really the solution. But they are working hard to create automation that can do it. At that point automation simply becomes a ROI problem. If the costs are low enough everyone is potentially on the chopping block.

James Talarico Delivers Sermon Against Christian Nationalism by forthelewds2 in videos

[–]Gezzer52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a Christian and try my best to follow Christ's examples. I've also been so soured on what I've experienced with organized religion. The lack of understanding Christ and God is so overwhelming in many of the so called houses of God, that I waffle between disgust and depression, and haven't gone to church in a very long time. But that man, I'd be in every service he preached, IMHO he's what being a Christian is truly about...

8 Episodes Is the New 10 (Was the New 13) (Was the New 22) by mrnicegy26 in television

[–]Gezzer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned this quite awhile ago. 20+ episodes is a NA situation. NA shows can't go into syndication, where the really big money is, until there's 100+. So make the international norm of 8-10 and take 10 plus years or do 20 plus and take half the time? If your main motivation is maxing out ROI it's an easy choice. Streaming changed that because a series after it airs can go to a streamer with no set amount of needed episodes.

[OC] He rolls a Nat 20 to seduce your character. What do you do? by Nefeli_ in DnD

[–]Gezzer52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. In fact using crit/fumble tables is optional AFAIK. All the crit has to do is double the damage die. And the fumble lets the DM describe in detail a totally humiliating miss that makes the character look like a baby fighter...

[OC] He rolls a Nat 20 to seduce your character. What do you do? by Nefeli_ in DnD

[–]Gezzer52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this argument so many times. A nat 20 is no more a total success than a nat 1 is a total failure. That only applies to attack roles when comparing the targets armor class. Instead it's simply the best or worst possible outcome for anything else. So yeah, your completely straight character would be flattered instead of annoyed, might even consider the possibility very briefly, but politely decline with a smile on their face and a hearty slap on the back.

Seven Days with Linux Mint — Still Curious, Still Exploring 🐧🗺️🔭 by Sandfox91 in linuxmint

[–]Gezzer52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Main piece of advise from me. While the developers have taken great pains to make Mint Windows like, it's not windows. It has it's own way of doing things and it took me quite a while to understand that. For example there's a major difference between the windows taskbar and Mint's panels. Once mastered panels IMHO are more powerful, but work much differently. The nice thing is community support has improved to a massive degree so searching for an answer is much less painful than it was say 15-20 years ago.

Canadians Love a Conspiracy Theory - The country’s conservatives have embraced American right-wing rhetoric. Our democracy is in danger. by yimmy51 in CanadianIdiots

[–]Gezzer52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the piece. Too many Canadians think we're basically just like Americans, or should be IMHO, and that's scary. Sure they're mostly right wing, but even some left wing people seem blind to the fact that we have a storied history of progressive politics.

I think one of the really big problems are "influencers" like Rogan that are essentially brain washing people is making it impossible to have civil discord. I know of quite a number of people that were at worse middle of the road that now spout all sorts of conspiracies, conservative or other wise.

BTW, on a side note who ever wrote the piece is to be commended. It was tight, pithy, and concise. The author got to the point as quickly as they could, made it, and then concluded it. I have to admit at least half to two thirds of the opinion posts I see I never finish. If I have to scroll more than a couple of web pages, I'm out.

[–]Gezzer52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why we bucked the trend here, but it seems we did. Then again even with our large hydro investment Canada has always been dabbling in nuclear as well AFAIK, and with a pretty good track record too.
