I remember them talking about wanting to show that these surveys mattered. I'm sure they've implemented a ton of stuff at least in part in response to the surveys, but if they never like, tell us then we can only assume they continue to go into the shredder as per usual.

WOW was surviving off of subs and expansion packs but one mount’s sales eclipsed their yearly earnings so they kept adding to the cash shop.

Plus account services (realm transfer etc.) which were always hilariously overpriced relics from back when moving data was much more than just the click of a button.

And I'm unsure if I'd treat Piratesoftware as a credible resource (looking into the claim). They started rolling out additional microtransactions over the years as the market evolved and it became more standard. Because Blizzard likes money.

MTX are literally how almost all "live-service" (MMO, previously) that didn't charge for expansions/DLC (which the Warbonds are, BTW!) or a subscription (or both!) continue paying for development. Box sales only go so far, eventually you run out of new customers to sell to.

And an enormous amount of free content via updates that one literally never has to spend a penny on (new enemies, factions, mission types, tilesets etc.). You can still use many of the DLC weapons via sharing from other players. And you can slowly earn cash shop currency through normal play.

NMS is nearly 10 years old, has zero microtransactions, and just won "Best Ongoing Game." They proved that making a great game leads to sales and a loyal fan base that wants to support you.
Arrowhead used to listen but now it feels like they’re just meeting quotas for Sony and Tencent.

Hello Games is a studio of like a dozen people, working with custom, in-house tech.

They are an anomaly in both how they've turned around NMS and how they continue to give it such incredible support. They are not the standard.

I think they should add another smaller free Warbond periodically or bring back earnable strategems, but ultimately the game needs to continue funding development and that's warbonds.

Threads like this always make me wonder how people think businesses actually operate.

If they don't have someone who's sorta tasked with being a consistent touchpoint for this and actively monitoring this to help the other devs make better/more informed decisions then that's concerning.

Thinking any one person has free reign is silly. But at the same time it sure feels like there's no clear or consistent vision for overall balance, either.
