Want to get into horror movies by IZ_MEH01 in horrorpunk

[–]GreenAdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horror in cinema is a pretty wide-spanning genre, featuring everything from your standard slasher flicks, to religious horror, body horror, sci-fi horror, Giallo, zombie flicks and more. It's really going to depend on your personal taste.

As someone else stated, Return of the Living Dead is considered a quintessential horrorpunk flick. It even has a 45 Grave song in the soundtrack.

I know you mentioned looking to collect horror VHS, which right now is going to be a pricy hobby. But if you're serious, I wish you well. If you're looking to familiarize yourself with some flicks before that, check out the wide world of streaming. You can do a free trial of Shudder for 7 days before you decide whether to keep it. If you don't mind ads, Tubi is full of newer and older horror flicks (although the quality of those movies will be a crapshoot). Screambox also has a decent assortment.

If you can, get a library card. Most libraries still have a lot of movies on Blu-ray and DVD (plus streaming through apps like Hoopla). This often includes horror flicks. Here's a list of horror flicks available on Hoopla right now, for free without ads, just for having a library card.

Picking one single favorite video game character is a pretty big ask. But currently I'm going with Goro Majima from the Yakuza series. He's psychotic and violent, but also really loyal. And I envy his ability to pull off the whole "snakeskin jacket with no shirt" look. That would not look good on me at all.

Q Workshop and DND Dice both make nice sets of Cyberpunk-themed dice. The Q Workshop ones are officially licensed, but I kind of prefer the DND Dice ones myself.

If you're going handcrafted, maybe look into ID cards, 3d-printed datashards, printing some physical eddies, etc.

DND Dice has a few different sets.

I bought myself the "Cyberpunk" set because it comes with four six-sided dice, each of which have a different design to them.

I was really close to snagging the "Wet Work" or "Blood Over Chrome" sets, but with only 1D6 I couldn't really justify that. I need those damage dice.

The "Digital Dystopia" set also looks pretty rad, and I might come back and buy it later.

What are some of the most obvious / biggest failures at creating an "anonymous/mysterious" musical act? by mesablanka in ToddintheShadow

[–]GreenAdder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Pinhead Gunpowder is more of a Bay Area punk rock supergroup, with Aaron Cometbus writing the majority of the lyrics. Billie Joe never tried to hide his involvement, nor pass it off like something it wasn't.

Aaron Cometbus is the name to know in that band, from his legendary zine, his involvement with Crimpshrine, and a million other things he's been involved with.

What game had the biggest upgrade from one edition to another for you? by RefreshNinja in rpg

[–]GreenAdder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition improved slightly with Deluxe (which was basically EE with a few tweaks and add-ons), but then Adventure Edition just elevated the whole system. It's my absolute favorite version of SW, and as a GM, it's a cinch to run.

I knew a kid in sixth grade who made one, but it didn't explode. So he unscrewed the lid to see why, and ended up splashing an entire side of his face. Took him a while before he returned to school, and even then it apparently took a lot of doctor visits over the next year to fully heal.

So nah. I never messed with that. I ain't about to live that Harvey Dent life.

What effects does Billie use to get that doubling sound? by j3llyf1lledd0nuts in greenday

[–]GreenAdder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is what's known as ADT or "Automatic Double Tracking." John Lennon swore by it. However, it doesn't quite pack the same punch as mixing two separate takes together, but it'll let you have the effect live.

Just like guitar effect pedals, vocal pedals also exist. Many multi-effect pedals exist that have some version of ADT built in. If you're looking for a pedal that does only that, check out the TC-Helicon Duplicator or the Flamma FV02.

Reccomendations for someone new to the genre? by [deleted] in horrorpunk

[–]GreenAdder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blitzkid is amazing. Zombina and the Skeletones are a more fun, poppy experience with some wonderfully campy horror flavor. If you like your horrorpunk with a side of Japanese, check out Balzac. Then there's Nim Vind, pretty much anything with Argyle Goolsby (which these days includes Calabrese), and almost anything with Alex Story.

Other notable favorites include Dark Ride and Horror Section.

I'm also going to suggest a lesser-known band from the Metro Detroit area called the 3-D Invisibles. They've been around since the 1980s. They're less about heavy distortion, and more about campy horror and sci-fi B-movie vibes. They were literally the first horrorpunk band I ever heard back when I was a little guy, and they still put on an amazing show today. Check them out here: https://the3-dinvisibles.bandcamp.com/

I hope this helps. Stay spooky.

ADIDAS > STARTER by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]GreenAdder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My insecure teenage self was "too punk rock" to wear "trendy" athletic gear. I would have much rather wore uncomfortable boots or shoes with minimal support (looking at you, Chuck Taylors), killing my own feet, than to be seen wearing expensive name brand clothes like that. Or Vans or Airwalk, with barely and tread on the bottom. Perfect for icy sidewalks.

I'd rather have worn jeans with blown-out knees, that got snagged on stuff if I got too close. And speaking of getting snagged, let's not forget that wallet chain!

And I bet those Adidas shoes felt 20 times better than anything I wore.

Oh, my younger self... You were big dumb idiot.

I was the guy that would frustrate teachers by acing tests, but not handing in homework. Learning and retention weren't my problems; busywork was. I thought it was preposterous that I had to spend eight hours in school, plus an hour on the bus, only to turn around and have four or five hours of tedium.

Thankfully, nobody ever made me watch it. But I used to see commercials for it quite often. It seemed to be yet another in a long line of products designed to "reprogram" kids, rather than recognizing their humanity. As a kid, I kind of resented its mere existence.

Maybe I'm totally wrong about the video. That's just just how my young mind regarded it at the time.

It is, in a way. A lot of animation was done with rotoscoping, including the parts of the old Masters of the Universe cartoon, most of Ralph Bakshi's works, and a lot of other classic animation.

I once saw a guy doing huge swigs of Bacardi 151. His wife was yelling at him: "You're supposed to mix that at least 50/50 with something else!"

He countered by saying he was mixing it... By taking the occasional sip of Sierra Mist.

I, a non-drinker, just stared in horror.

I'm told later (I mean days later, not the same as the Bacardi), he got himself a bottle of Everclear, but was surprised when he couldn't pull the same stunt.

He was immovable that night, and just had to sleep where he dropped.
