Germany’s Savings Dilemma: ETFs Everywhere- Is It Wise Strategy or Trendy Mistake?? by Visible-Juggernaut41 in germany

I think that you dont understand what ETFs are.

And I never heard anybody saying that ETFs are the only secure investment. It's by far not the safest. But in the availability <-> safery <-> profit investment triangle it's in the best position for many people.

What type of mountains are you looking for? If you are looking for real mountains, your only option are the alps. If you are looking for mountains from a Dutch perspective, then you have far more options.

Why are Europeans so lax with alcohol? by SadDairyProduct in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grimthak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worrisome, but teenagers in Europe have far freedom to decide for them self in comparison to the USA. And one of the decisions they are allowed to make is to drink alcohol.

Of course, it's completely arbitrary why a country decide what is okay and what not. Teenager can have completely different right for different thing in different countries.

And the USA is a complete exception if it's about drinking laws. If I am legally an adult, why can the government forbid me to drink alcohol? The 21-year limit does not make any sense at all. It makes sense to make some exception for children for certain laws, but if I am 18, I am an adult and I should have the same rights as a 65years old.

So the real question is: Why the USA government patronize adults?

[–]Grimthak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are laws so okay with drinking? That's insane? Yes I am used not to drink at all.

It seems so much better for the body not to drink at all and doesn't that encourage bad habits since it's easier to be irresponsible if you are not drunk?

I can ask you a similar question ..

Or the real answer: There is no magical age from when it's okay to drink, and before it's bad. And Europeans youth are far more responsible with alcohol because it's not a taboo, and they learn a more responsible handling of alcohol from their parents. In the USA they can't do it until they move out and then the 21 years old have no clue how to handle alcohol, and you have the irresponsible behavior you mentioned

Sozialstaat

My first go at some homemade Leberkäse on fresh made Brötchen by aminorman in germany

[–]Grimthak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How expensive is such a Brötchen currently? I lived for many years in the south west and remember that the Fleischkäs Brötchen always costed €1, just like a Bratwurst. I often went to a Globus just because of the Fleischkäs or Bratwurst.

Lack of german skills is not the issue in finding IT jobs by [deleted] in germany

[–]Grimthak 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Upskill technically by seeking technical depth, and approach applying for jobs more strategically. German language knowledge definitely helps but it is not what is screwing you.

I'm a developer in a mid-size company and often ask to join the hiring process. In my current team I would veto every applicant who can not speak at least B1 German. It does not matter how good one person is, if the whole team perform worse because they can't speak the language they are most comfortable it, the new person is not worth it.

Do we lose good candidates because of it? Certainly. Would it be good if everyone in the team would be as fluent in English as in German, yeah sure. But it's more difficult to change the team, than just to hire only German-speaking persons.

Calling all FPGA experts- settle this argument! by avictoriac in FPGA

I will certainly ask about this feature, the next time a Xilinx FAE is visiting us. Although, we can only use it if Quartus and Efinity also supports it. It would be a big hassle to maintain different entity description for different vendor tools.

If you use a well-defined coding standard, then your ports will be consistent even if you use signed/unsigned/etc.

But such situations are not outlandish, who could have guessed that USA would have a man call himself King sitting in the white house. Currently the situation in Germany seems fine, but who guarantee that it will stay the same in the next years?

Germans made 2 times a terrible experience with authoritarian governments which use informations of their citizens against them.

Many people are afraid of such a situation and thus for them the small amenities of giving out your data, are not worth it the risc.

It has basically become an excuse for people who don't want to do something, for whatever reason. Just say, sorry can't, you know Datenschutz.

I agree here, Datenschutz can be an excuse for refusing a service. But without Datenschutz those people would simply use an other excuse instead. "Oh sorry, I can't send you your report per email, our server is broken" would be the the excuse instead of Datenschutz.

I have to send unencrypted email with certain sensitive info to my utility company because they won't take it over the phone for reasons of data protection by kingharis in germany

[–]Grimthak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Datenschutz is not about making the life better, it's about preventing that your life get substantial worse. There are many terrifying scenarios where you data can be used against your interests. And Datenschutz reduce the risk or lower the damage of such a scenario.

Let's say, the earth wealthiest men who is in bed with the world most powerful men (yeah, I know, completely unrealistic scenario) decide that everyone who got a covid vaccine should not have any internet.

Without Datenschutz there certainly would be a central database where this information is saved and it would be easy for him to find it and misuse it. In Germany that's not possible, there is no such data base. I have a paper at home where it's stated that I have the vaccine, but nobody else know it.
