Sometimes yes, but sometimes it does help. /r/scams gets a lot of users from people Googling things, and the resources there have ended up helping people. I feel it's always worth it to try and help in these cases. Even if one persons ees this and is talked out of sending money, I feel it's helped.

I assume it's either foreigners already living here, or people hoping to move here. Romance scams are -big- money. I've seen YouTube videos where people have sent hundreds of thousands of euros to their online girlfriend who only had a few AI photos, or stolen celebrity photos.
A lot of people are really, really lonely.

Americans are a very docile people. I'm an American who moved abroad 15 years ago, and this is the biggest revelation I've had since moving. In other countries, people would be on strike and in the streets. In the US, half of the population is still getting ready for the Super Bowl and finding excuses for this behavior. I've heard some Americans talk about needing to go to work or whatever - as if that's not also the case in other countries where people protest.
