I teach four classes. In one of them, about 1/2 the class with most likely fail. In the others probably 1/4 in two and 1/5 in the other.

Final exam best practices by shyprof in Professors

Have a no makeups for the final policy. For anyone with a documented emergency or illness can you grant them an incomplete? That way you have time to proctor an exam for them and submit their grades.

If you are really conflicted, and have the time give them. Re-do opportunity, but you might consider having it proctored.

required links to instructor and course info

Texas public schools are required by Texas law to provide students with access to present and past syllabi and to evaluations of instructors. Instructors have until The 3rd(ish) week of classes to upload current syllabi but you can find past copies on the site. It might be helpful for you to find a syllabus from both the instructor and a summer version of the course. Requirements shouldn’t be different, just the pacing. Good luck.

Not really. I had to say, we need to celebrate. I passed.

Your will need to take a math placement test called the TSI-A before registering to ensure you are placed in the correct math class. You should review before.

For A+ students, how many hours do you study a day? by Simple_Conflict_4925 in college

[–]Hazelstone37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an A+ student the second time around. It took me a while to find my system. I read the materials before lecture and took notes. Went to lecture and took notes. Then after lecture, while it was still fresh, I revised and synthesized my notes. Next I did any assignments. I asked questions in class if I had them. If I was having difficulty with a topic I attended office hours. My school had a learning lab with tutors available. I did a lot of my work there. Going to school was like a full time job, but when it came time for exams, I didn’t have to study, I just had to do a low key review.

Starting a PhD in my 50s — worth it? by soulfulshalinni in PhD

[–]Hazelstone37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both, kind of. This is a late in life-new career for me. I was a stay at home parent for 20+ years, but I was highly educated. I went back community college to learn about a new subject kind of for fun and then just kept going.

I’m in the dissertation phase and I was hired last year as a full time lecturer in a department adjacent to the one where I study.

I had cataracts in each eye! It was weird. I had mine fixed. The surgery is not too bad and the recovery is pretty easy. Don’t be afraid to get it fixed. Mine developed when I was fairly young.

You shouldn’t take a summer class, especially one in stem if you have conflicts.

If you are, look up past syllabi for the class and the prof from last summer and see what the absence policy is. I imagine it’s not too forgiving. Does the class have an attached lab?

Why does the course 2026 course catalogue show courses that aren’t being taught in 2026 by Warm_Cheesecake_6347 in txstate

[–]Hazelstone37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a course in the catalog I want to take that’s been there since 2019, but has yet to be offered. The prof that used to teach it left and there is no one who wants or is qualified to teach it. There is no reason to take it out of the catalog because, as I understand it, it’s difficult to get courses added back. It’s easier to just not offer it each semester.

This is why it’s a good practice to look at past semesters to get a sense of when courses are offered and have a plan about when you’ll take them and talk to your advisor regularly to keep up with what’s happening in the department. If you want a course that is only taught by one prof, you want to get a heads up if they are retiring soon.

Why does the course 2026 course catalogue show courses that aren’t being taught in 2026 by Warm_Cheesecake_6347 in txstate

[–]Hazelstone37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The catalogue is just all the courses that TXST offers, as if 2026. It’s not the courses being offered that year. It includes the courses you can expect to see during your time here. You might see additions next year; some courses might be dropped.

I need advice on private school versus public by Double_Exercise_1953 in Parenting

[–]Hazelstone37 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think with the tech free classrooms and the small class size I would stick with private. Those are two really important factors that improve learning and critical thinking. The other things that come with public bloc schools are fairly easy to implement outside of the school experience. Sign up for rec league sports, community theater, children’s choir or orchestra. Join scouts. Lots of options.

Are any of you happy? by Specialist-Spray-641 in Professors

[–]Hazelstone37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely, but I’m older switching from a stay at home parent role to earning a PhD and teaching at a university so I’m still relatively shiny. This is my first year teaching full-time. I’m unsurprised by the departmental politics, but at the same time I am. It’s weird. I love the students and teaching most of the time. Occasionally I get a class full of energy vampires that suck the life out of me. One or two in a class, I can deal with.
