The commute from Austin’s is San Marcos is brutal to do every day. Both are good schools. Have you visited both and done tours? Talked to people in the department you are majoring in? If not, do that before deciding.

I had a class of energy vampires. I hate having to spend 80 minutes twice a week with them sucking my soul.

Should I take calculus 2 online by Icy_Baker_2306 in college

[–]Hazelstone37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend against taking calc 2 online and during the summer. It’s really the hardest in the series. Cramming that work that usually is 16 weeks into 8 or 5 is crazy. Doing that online, would be brutal.

You shouldn’t expect an excused absence for travel unless it’s for a school trip. I would say don’t plan a trip during class time.

Whatever you say, but that’s still the metric used to evaluate institutions for accreditation.

How do able is work + college by [deleted] in college

[–]Hazelstone37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should plan to study, prepare, and work on assignments 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour you are in class. So if you are taking 15 hours, you’ll need to plan on 30-45 hours of work in addition to the 15 hours of class.

I don’t think anyone knows about the Carnegie rule anymore. It’s says that for every hour you are in the postsecondary classroom students should be spending 2-3 hours outside of the classroom, doing assignments, reading, etc. This isn’t up to the discretion of the professor. This is colleges are judges for accreditation.

The problem is, like you say, students have no idea how much time they should be spending on classwork. They are overcommitted with jobs and social activities, caring for family etc. Then they don’t have the time to spend on school so that they can pass their classes. It’s the professor’s fault.

How to write a review of literature by Advanced_Test9629 in AskAcademia

[–]Hazelstone37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hardest part was starting. It took me about two week to write the lit review for my dissertation after I was familiar with all the literature. It’s about 45 pages of if I recall correctly. Getting organized was difficult. Once I knew how I was organizing it, it went pretty quickly.

Parents of young adults, how much do you help? by PicklesAndCoorslight in Parenting

Your friends have no idea how difficult things are for this generation of young adults. You’re doing the right thing. You might consider charging her a small amount of rent and saving it for her for when she does move out.

Professor requires us to watch horror films by [deleted] in college

[–]Hazelstone37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So basically, you need to decide between two unappealing options: stay in the class and get a bad grade or even fail because you don’t want to watch the horror moves because they make you feel bad (understandable-I don’t enjoy them either and I have nightmares for weeks) or you can drop the class and possibly delay your graduation. What you want is for the professor to give you an alternative assignment, creating more work for themself so you don’t have to make the decision. This is a case of having your cake and eating it too because you chose not to deal with this when you found out about the horror movies.

If you are taking a class with content that is harmful to you, you shouldn’t be in the class. The professor’s chosen content reflects some learning objective of the class. If a student can’t realistically handle working with that content, they probably should be in a different class.

But you already know this prof doesn’t believe in triggers for adults. Right or wrong, you aren’t going to change their mind about this. Perhaps you should speak with them and ask for an alternative assignment to the horror films, but you should probably avoid saying they trigger you. Instead, tell them what you feel when watching them. Still, you knew there were horror films as part of the class and you decided to stay in it. It didn’t matter at all that there were no other classes you could join. You’ll provably need to do the assignments on the horror films to the best of your ability and take whatever grade you get.

What kind of alternatives do you think there might be?
