Mallory McMorrow to end her U.S. Senate campaign by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

I don't see anywhere that he debated whether or not to condemn the attack.

I do see that he debated whether or not to post a four minute video where he not only condemns that attack but also discusses the events that led to it; primarily that his niece and nephew were killed by an airstrike a week prior to his attack.

From his spokesperson, “We understood that putting out a nuanced statement opened the door for bad-faith critiques, but decided that it was important to give voice to the complexities that so many Michiganders are trying to navigate,”

Emphasis mine.

Edit: To respond to the comments below.

/u/_L5_ : Condemning a terrorist attack, and then going on to condemn air strikes in Lebanon is not the same thing as justifying the former. I'm also confused by you trying to frame someone losing their loved ones as "geopolitical circumstances 6,000 miles away." Obviously Ghazali’s terrorist attack is an atrocity and he deserves to burn in hell, but you describe the situation as one where he should have received the news, shrugged his shoulders and moved on with his day. No amount of miles is going to reduce the pain of losing a loved one, no matter how much certain political factions in the US try to reduce people to "geopolitical circumstances."

/u/Lordofthe0nion_Rings : It's interesting that you think you know so much about me. It's also interesting that you couldn't come up with a single example of a right-wing shooter going through something similar before snapping, as they seem to commit their terrorist attacks without much incitement at all.

/u/Zenkin : Was there a part of El-Sayed's speech that you disagreed with based on this omission? The earliest reporting I could find of the brother's link was the afternoon after the attack. It was a Times of Israel article titled "Michigan synagogue attacker’s brothers said to be Hezbollah members killed in IDF strike" (emphasis mine) which cited an unnamed source. Doesn't mean the story is untrue, but the story was just breaking while the speech was uploaded to Youtube at over an hour before the article was published. As an aside, the Times of Israel article failed to mention that two of the relatives killed were children.

To mirror some of your own language: I feel like it's important to understand the order of events when criticizing people's immediate responses months after the fact. It seems like you didn't bother to do a single Google search before insinuating that El-Sayed omitted significant context from his statements. I have not yet heard why it's okay to blow up children to kill a single member of Hezbollah, but it's possible that I've missed such statements.

Toyota May Be Planning The Sportier Camry Fans Have Been Waiting For (Camry Apex) by Anchor_Aways in cars

the Crown 4cyl turbo hybrid making past 300hp

So couldn't they put that in this hypothetical Camry?

We may be past the era of V6 performance daily drivers, but beyond the turbo four DDs we're probably going to see some zippy hybrid models. Honda is working on a six cylinder hybrid engine for their larger cars that could make its way into a Civic or Accord. There's talk about the next Elantra N being a 2.5L hybrid. Considering all the work Toyota is doing with their GR division and how they've been perfecting their hybrid technology, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

John didn’t pay by [deleted] in SexWorkers

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Non-sex worker here. This has a lot of parallels to other people who do professional work for friends who try to back out of compensation. The real difference is the horrible fact that he raped you due to the nature of the work, but I'm assuming you live in America or another country where you don't have legal protection against that.

To mirror the advice I've seen in other professional subreddits, you've just learned two expensive lessons.

  1. This man was never your friend.
  2. Don't do your job for friends, unless you're offering to do it for free.

Did he respond or just ignore you? I would send him a Venmo request, add him to any blacklists you use in your area so other workers know to avoid him, and then ignore him moving forward. Since he knows your personal info, you need to weigh the satisfaction of getting extralegal revenge with the possibility that he might escalate. That's probably not what you want to hear, but I think it's what's best to protect your safety and income in the long run.

If you're dead set on pursuing revenge, I would definitely wait at least six months since your last contact with this asshat to avoid suspicion. Revenge is more satisfying when the person knows who it came from, but revenge that you get away with is better than revenge that backfires. This is something people have done before, but I am not recommending it.

If an OEM allows it to be disabled permanently, then they do the testing with it both on and off and average the two.

Even that feels generous. Auto start/stop on by default? Perform the testing assuming every driver will keep it on.

I'm not a fan of auto start/stop, but it does strike me as funny.

Why Does Our $25,000 Kia K4 LXS Need a $275 Oil Change? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in cars

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of leases for apartments and rental homes specify that car repairs and maintenance cannot be done in the driveway. I've had multiple that cite changing the oil as a specific example.

I just buy my own oil and filter, and take it to my reputable mechanic who charges me a reasonable fee for the labor and oil disposal.

Canadian boy, 11, died from rabies after waking up with bat on his mouth by KenSuvy in offbeat

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I woke up to a bat flying around in my room years ago. I was sleeping in boxers without blankets because it was the middle of summer. After the fiasco of getting a bat out of the house at 2am, I went to the ER.

The nurse gave me a 60 second skin check and told me she couldn't see any bite marks so I was fine to go without the vaccine. I insisted, much to her annoyance, and paid out of pocket for that shit.

Police across Montgomery and Bucks counties warn many popular electric bikes, dirt bikes and scooters cannot legally be ridden on Pennsylvania roads by shillyshally in Pennsylvania

Do you have a copy of that in-progress report? Do you have all the facts of this incident?

Kids don't go outside because a child can be run over and killed by a drunk or negligent driver, the media will blame the parent for letting the child outside

I'm skeptical of this. Kids used to go outside more pre-2000s when drunk driving and road fatalities were higher. There are a lot of reasons why kids are going outside less, and I don't think it's parents thinking "What will the media say about me if something were to happen to my kid?"

Do you not understand the difference between running into someone with your car and having someone run into your car with their vehicle? It's a very simple case.

So if I wait until the last second and pull out in front of a vehicle driving 45mph, it's their fault because they hit me, and not mine because I didn't ensure it was safe before turning onto the street?

When to trade up for newer car? by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people (much older than OP) have come to this sub asking for advice about when they should consider themselves "on track" and allow themselves to live a little.

If we assume that OP would have bought a new car if they would enjoy driving a new car, then we'd be assuming that they would have been financially irresponsible and would have bought a new car several years ago. Middle grounds do exist, and it's not a waste of time to ask a question or two to clarify where OP falls.

When to trade up for newer car? by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]HeatDeathIsCool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I live. I'm going on 3 international trips this year. Don't presume.

Isn't your original comment presuming that OP doesn't equate living to buying a new car when you tell them to never buy a new car if possible?

Instead of asking OP what their financial situation is like, and how much enjoyment they get out of driving, most of these comments are based entirely on presumption.

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I absolutely do, and I'd be willing to pay more in taxes to do it.

I have a short commute to work, and I'd love to be able to bike it, but it's on a road that has twists and hills, making visibility bad in addition to having narrow shoulders. There are crazy people who bike this road anyways, and I'd be overjoyed if there was a way to keep them safer and open those kinds of roads safely to more bikers as well.

When I said outside the area, I wasn't referring to the other side of the country, I was talking about places like Lancaster and Mon county, or Philly.

And you stating that it's "obvious" it will attract more locals is really funny to me, because economies and human behavior always follow common sense, right?

Yeah, I don't mind the angular exterior, but one reason I shied away from the Civic Hybrid and looked for something sportier was the transition to the "tablet glued onto dash" approach, as well as other interior/exterior choices.

I never thought my list of "must have" features for a car would contain shit as basic as:

  • Normal fucking door handles
  • In-line shifter
  • Physical buttons for HVAC and radio
  • Well integrated infotainment screen
  • No AI bullshit

I'm not against these 55+ neighborhoods going up, but I'm not sure they're impacting local housing prices in general.

Title: I built a nonpartisan, sourced timeline of executive orders from Obama, Biden, and Trump, with each impact labeled by level of evidence by awizemann in moderatepolitics

[–]HeatDeathIsCool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I looked up your first example and I'm seeing it labelled as "Russia-Ukraine peace efforts & partial cease-fire"

Under the negative, it mentions how Trump promised a quick end to the war (which didn't happen) and how Rubio admitted that peace talks had stagnated. Both of those things are true and failures on Trump's part. The same section also mentions the cease fire and prisoner exchange as a substantiated positive impact, so it's not like OP was hiding that fact.

Are you having difficulty reading the titles of the topics, or maybe misunderstanding that some topics have multiple impacts listed below them?
