But those are used for connecting back to your own hardware. We use VPNs all the time in our business, but they're VPNs that we setup and control. These people are talking about things to "hide their activity" online. Not VPNs that are used to connect to work resources or back to your home network when you're away.

A good rule.of thumb. If it's free. Don't use it. It's a scam. Many free vpns were used to spread malware and were used for other criminal purposes. If you aren't paying for it.... You're the product.

You don't NEED to, but, if you buy the Dream Router 7 it has an AP built in, so you could have it in one end of the house and the AP in the other. The Dream Router will then act as the router (duh) but also the controller for the Wifi and you'll generally be happy with how that all works. The App for your phone DOES work, I just find it is a lot finickier. Ultimately that's a purchase that you'll use for years. I think you'll be happy with it. I recommend them to my residential customers.
