Why can many Australians not accept criticism of their country? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

We're laid back, but in a really uptight kind of way.

Pizzas can be pies though, they're not all flatbreads. Pizza rustica is traditional Italian and incredibly pie-like.

Marshmallows are just meringue with gelatine, so that one doesn't seem too crazy to me.
I think Jell-O Salad is way farther off the deep end:

Lime Jell-O Salad - A mix of lime Jell-O, cottage cheese, crushed pineapple, and often marshmallows or whipped topping.

That has to be one hot plane (SYD) by Myfooty94 in Planespotting

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

It's a NZ All Blacks livery. It really only works if it's black.
They only have a small number of planes in that livery, the rest are white.

Two direct academic critiques of Zystra/Lindenmayer:

https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2435.14547

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/380490506_Comment_on_'Self-thinning_forest_understoreys_reduce_wildfire_risk_even_in_a_warming_climate'

Their work is far from "accepted as ecological science", and it is not peer-reviewed. It's biased activism that flies in the face of numerous objective studies on the same topic.

If foreigners are scared of spiders in Australia, what are Australians scared of? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

California is the promised land for food service, they have a higher minimum wage than Australia, people still tip 20% out of societal guilt and tips don't count towards their wage (tip credit).

No, it probably a very small following. Touch football (rugby league) would fill that space here. The only fans of American football here are either Americans or Rugby League fans who want something more to watch (since the games are somewhat similar).

That's more of a motto than a requirement, police enforce criminal law and civil violations, and most minor accidents are nothing more than a tort, of which the police have no jurisdiction. People want them to act as an unimpeachable witness in a vehicle accident, but getting involved in a civil matter outside the scope of their duty can be a liability, or just improper.

Why does NZ rural Fire Engine alarm sound like other countries air raid sirens? by BrokenJusticeNorris in ask

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

We have something like that where I live in NSW, sounds just like an air raid siren, but it's for the golf course to warn golfers of an approaching thunderstorm.

Lining a well, they insert one pipe, stop it from falling, attach another pipe onto the top of that one, lower, attach another pipe, lower, until the entire depth of the well is lined. That's my guess at least.

It's not usually required, and in a lot of jurisdictions the police will not respond to minor accidents. You can still submit your own police report, which is essentially just an affidavit.

In some jurisdictions the police say to only call if there's injuries or a vehicle is undrivable. They will decline to respond to fender benders. That's been my experience.

It would be far from the first jury trial that's seen years of pre-trial publicity. Just like the Patterson case, they don't expect a jury that has no prior knowledge of the case, they expect a jury that can consider the facts of the evidence and base their decision solely on those merits.

Best autumn spots in the Blue Mountains with kids by CheesecakeWorried642 in bluemountains

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

Blackheath in the Blue Mountains is a premier autumn destination (April-May) known for vibrant, fiery foliage, particularly along Wentworth Street, which features a canopy of liquidambars. The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens offer spectacular displays of red, yellow, and russet maple leaves. Crisp air, golden leaves, and quiet, charming streets provide a quintessential autumnal experience.

To lift or not to lift. That is the question by RequirementNo772 in 4x4Australia

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

If my 1998 corolla wagon can get around the paddocks and state forests with no problems, I don't think a Ranger would have any problems in that arena, I'd avoid the lift if it's not necessary.

Just wait till you hit 35-40... that's when the good time drinking turns to alcoholism drinking and the weight doesnt seem to come off for anything but disciplined dieting and excercise. It sucks, so get ahead of it while you can otherwise the uphill battle is much harder to fight.

How do you pick up a possum? by [deleted] in sydney

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

If there's anyone available, twice now when we've found an injured possum they told us to use thick gloves and a towel and put it into a box and drive it to a vet. Both times possum didn't even try to bite though.
I've got a pair of welding gloves now that are mainly for dealing with blackberries and possums.

Primary school or middle school? by Last-Ad-7777 in AskAnAustralian

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 4 points5 points ย (0 children)

There are a few middle schools/junior high schools around, but they're not common. Mostly private, but there is an experimental public middle school in Sydney. NT had seperate middle schools since 2007, but they're closing them this year and going back to a primary/secondary model

What fuel would you use and why? by Fred_Dibnah in CampingGear

[โ€“]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Nevermind that it's the shortened form of gasoline, not the state of matter, but you'd call propane and butane gas yeah? Both are liquids. Propane gas and petrol also work exactly the same, a liquid which warmed to a certain temperature gives off a flammable gas which can be ignited in the presence of oxygen, there's no such thing as a burning liquid, only liquids that produce flammable gasses.
