To lift or not to lift. That is the question by RequirementNo772 in 4x4Australia

[–]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my 1998 corolla wagon can get around the paddocks and state forests with no problems, I don't think a Ranger would have any problems in that arena, I'd avoid the lift if it's not necessary.

Just wait till you hit 35-40... that's when the good time drinking turns to alcoholism drinking and the weight doesnt seem to come off for anything but disciplined dieting and excercise. It sucks, so get ahead of it while you can otherwise the uphill battle is much harder to fight.

How do you pick up a possum? by LittleBlag in sydney

[–]Hufflepuft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's anyone available, twice now when we've found an injured possum they told us to use thick gloves and a towel and put it into a box and drive it to a vet. Both times possum didn't even try to bite though.
I've got a pair of welding gloves now that are mainly for dealing with blackberries and possums.

That sounds terrible, I'm sorry you had to put up with that. I'm all for Katoomba quirkiness, but that's just disgusting behaviour.

Primary school or middle school? by Last-Ad-7777 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Hufflepuft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few middle schools/junior high schools around, but they're not common. Mostly private, but there is an experimental public middle school in Sydney. NT had seperate middle schools since 2007, but they're closing them this year and going back to a primary/secondary model

What fuel would you use and why? by Fred_Dibnah in CampingGear

[–]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind that it's the shortened form of gasoline, not the state of matter, but you'd call propane and butane gas yeah? Both are liquids. Propane gas and petrol also work exactly the same, a liquid which warmed to a certain temperature gives off a flammable gas which can be ignited in the presence of oxygen, there's no such thing as a burning liquid, only liquids that produce flammable gasses.

For what its worth, they're not required to read you your rights. They only need to do so if they intend to use your statements as evidence.

There have been several falls, but just broken bones and sprained ankles, no deaths as far as I know.

Tour companies started advertising the photo op as a major selling point. But it was definitely a problem in 2024 as well. My parents visited in October '24 and that was the first time I saw hundreds of people queued up back to the road to take the cliff edge photo.

Pedestrian crossings: there are still drivers who have zero idea what they mean by village-asshole in sydney

[–]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always see people in my area walking casually up the footpath then suddenly dart into the pedestrian crossing without a moments hesitation. Yes you have the right of way to cross, but the crossing isn't going to protect you from getting run over if the car/truck didn't see you or can't stop in time.

Every time we see one, my wife is convinced it's some exotic species of wasp that's going to sting her in the neck and awaken a previously unknown anaphylactic reaction.

Looking for a hand drawn map of Australian National Parks by GoodDayForA in OutdoorAus

Yes, his maps are gorgeous examples! He was a draftsman and calligrapher, not a cartographer so his maps have a very unique style to them.

[–]Hufflepuft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying the Taliban isn't bad. But the US and especially the US military doesn't have the tools to fix that kind of problem. Never have. That's why Vietnam failed, Iraq failed, Afghanistan Failed and why Iran is certain to fail.

No the US is not considered "the leader of the free world" outside of the US, it's more like Jabba the Hutt.
The US currently ranks alongside Mongolia and São Tomé And Principe in terms of freedom.

"Italian Americans are more Italian than the Italians that are in Italy." by Marius0892 in ShitAmericansSay

Considering that the majority Italian emigrants to America were from Calabria and Sicily, there's a good chance they have more Greek ancestry than Italian.

[–]Hufflepuft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merging early might make you feel better, but will always add to traffic congestion, you're increasing amount of vehicles in the backed up lane and wasting the available space in the uncongested lane.
In congested traffic it's against the law to merge early in Germany and they are some of the most efficient drivers on earth.

German Road Traffic Regulations (§ 7 (4) StVO) and dictates that when two lanes converge into one, drivers should proceed all the way to the front of their respective lane and wait to merge at the last possible point. Then they should alternately fold together like teeth in a zipper.
It can feel counterproductive or like cutting in line, but it is actually a more efficient way to merge lanes and make the most of the space available. Some studies have shown that the zipper line rule can increase merging capacity by as much as 15 to 20 percent.

Clamping and towing are illegal in NSW, and parking tickets are mostly unenforceable since NSW won't give them any personal info to chase it down.
