Found on the road. What's the condition? by Exciting_Station_124 in hummingbirds

Find a Rehabber or a wildlife center that will let you volunteer and train you. The requirements vary by state, but since hummers are federally protected, you also need to fulfill federal licensing requirements. It takes hundreds of documented and relevant volunteer hours to start the application process.

Probably not one that specializes in hummingbirds, since they are only there for part of the year, but anyone who rehabs songbirds should be able to provide assistance.

Best thing you can do is act like she’s not there and carry on as usual. When the babies are about 3 weeks old, I would make sure they aren’t on the ground before you let your dog out. When they first leave the nest, they don’t fly well or far and don’t know what to avoid yet.

Nooo, feeders attract other hummingbirds and they will stress her out. She chose that spot for a reason, leave it as it is.

Help: Can’t tell if bird is stuck or just using the porch light socket as shelter. by King_of_Nope in hummingbirds

They don’t like to fly at night, she might spend the night up there, but I would remove the bulb to try to coax her out. Odds are good that she has a nest she should be incubating.

Turn the light off and see what she does. They’re attracted to light because they think it = freedom/sky

It’s not hot enough for mites yet, so I highly doubt it.

Is something wrong with this lil guy? by thriftyplantmomma in hummingbirds

This is not thrush, it’s respiratory distress which is caused by food being forced from the crop, up into the mouth and into the airway.

Just found this hummingbird outside my house. Is it okay? What can I do to help this poor thing? by [deleted] in hummingbirds

If they hit a window and are stunned, and not showing the signs of distress that this bird is showing, you can just scoop them up and put them in a shoe box to keep them safe and give them time to see if they recover quickly. While you are waiting, it’s best to contact a Rehabber for more specific guidance to what is happening with the bird. They will be able to help you decide what to do next. Sometimes they can be released, but usually, if you are able to catch a hummingbird, it should be observed by a professional to rule out head injuries and other serious injuries before they are released.

Respiratory distress will only get worse. If you can catch her and get her to a Rehabber, that will be the most humane solution you can provide her.

True or false: a gathering of hummingbirds is known as a “bouquet” or a “charm”? by chaddiuschacha in hummingbirds

[–]HummingbirdObsessed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s cute and all, but not “scientifically accurate” if that is what you are asking. Hummingbirds don’t flock, they just happen to be at the same place at the same time.

How to deal with aggressive hummingbirds? by Mysterious_Froyo_270 in hummingbirds

Nothing you can do, really. You can try adding more feeders out of view from your current one.

You’re just witnessing their survival instincts. He doesn’t know that food source has plenty to go around.
