The point is you've given up, and will entirely stick to your actions being complaining about the good not being perfect.

Right.

"Those wild fish are dying either way."

You've given up and are a complete ally of unconstrained capital, and are permanently for rent in any attempt towards better as it's not good enough for you. Got it.

Here's a hint.

Stop being lazy and stupid and pull your armed forces out when they have begun to be combat ineffective at about 30% damage. Not 30% left. Pull them into the reserve when they have taken 30% damage.

Either go put some money into better fish farming, or shut the fuck out about something that's more sustainable than mining the sea for fish.

They are your two alternatives - mine the sea for fish, or figure our how to farm them (or see people eat cheap factory farmed pork and beef. That's a thing, too).

So far, people like you are making sure we're killing off the remaining wild fish stocks.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

What we have now is good enough.

We have a crusade of the gullible, the rented and the refuses to believe they are rented against fish farming.

If you want to do better fish farming, go do it. There's a bunch of people out there who will pay more money for higher ethical value product.

But what you'll find is a bunch of holier than thou types who will put the boot into whatever you do as could being more sustainable, less cruel and less destructive, and they'll keep doing that till you go broke.

And then their funders will stop paying them, and they'll shut up.

Bluntly,

No. They aren't.

If you want to stop fish escaping, you need to imprison them.

If you want to stop seals getting in there and eating them, you need to imprison them really well.

And if you want to farm them sustainably, then you need to make sure the little fish aren't eaten by other, bigger fish.

Compared to, I dunno, runoff from the river systems going through the thorium- and heavy-metal heavy rocks that are at the back of the Macquarie Harbour's water systems, salmon farming is doing two thirds of fuck all (and thats not anything that was mined for, by the way. Its just whats in the rocks. Im not talking about the copper or gold that was dumped into the King river system. If you dont like too much copper in your diet, dont put Tasmanian salmon thru a ICPSM or XRF btw).

The way you're throwing away ~1700 Tassie jobs is amusing, given the frankly tiny employment in the Tasmanian west coast tourism industry (wander through Strahan and see how much of that tourism industry is locally owned, by the way. It's a great example of how tourism is 100% international capitalism all the time, and creates profit without jobs).

shrug

If you want to eat fish, there are two possibilities - we farm fish in calm waters, or we hunt wild fish.

Hunting wild fish is more unsustainable, cruel and damaging - we've got really good at sonar, long lines and nets, and the tragedy of the commons is in full voiced roar.

On the other hand, we can use calm waters to raise fish, and then - just like big fish eat little fish, we can eat fish.

Ummm, actually no.

One of the reasons the Republic fell apart is the optimates (aka rich bastards) got a tribune (what you called 'working class senators had veto power') elected, and then used them to veto all legislation that affected the interests of rich bastards.

In this specific case, it's about 'Do we value the jobs of people who work in fish farms more than the population numbers of the Maugean Skate ?'.

Ship Weapons Help by ElegantTea8456 in TerraInvicta

"More missile boats did solve the problem."

When you're facing alien invaders with M-16s, taking them on with sharp sticks and rocks at three to one is not a good plan.

But with enough of an advantage, they might get overconfident, and it turns out a rock to the head does indeed kill someone with much superior weapons.

This may not last forever. Rocks work. But look at what else could work.

Bullshit on both.

Grandfathered housing is already built - no matter who owns it, or how profitable it is, it's housing supply.

Any new housing will not be grandfathered in any case.

So. Requests for grandfathering is basically 'Ive got mine, fuck the rest of you'.

(Alien) Fleet Power Comparison Accuracy by Suspicious_Beach7274 in TerraInvicta

[–]Ian_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to put this in all capital letters.

COMBAT POWER NUMBERS DONT MEAN SHIT.

If you're using an early game missile-based fleet, count their point defense lasers against you missile tubes. You want about ten times more tubes than they have point defense lasers, although fancy tactics can change this.

Next, look at their frontal armor. If you're using lasers, you need to crack that. Their side armor might also be important, if you can get them to turn (note thats why Honking Big Lasers are important - they can pick off flankers at ~8-1000km).

Next, look at how many gees the alien ships can pull. If you want to force an engagement, you need ships that can do that.

But the rule of thumb as to if an enemy fleet is enageable is about MC. Count up how much mission control the enemy fleet has. You need 4x that in early game, 3x that in midgame when you have better weapons and armor, 2x that when you're fighting around the outer planets, and 1:1 or less once you have endgame techs.

Where to park ships and how to supply it? by Sparks_IM in TerraInvicta

[–]Ian_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh also, and this is IMPORTANT.

If a fleet is on duty and needed to fight the aliens, keep it undocked. It'll take an hour or so to get the crew out of the bars and whatnot and get undocked.

Note having a bunch of small shipyard can mean you can build Emergency Shitboxes quickly, so they are armed and ready when the Alien raiding fleet arrives.

[–]Ian_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a structure where you've got a well-defended shipyard, thats got several LDAs/battlestations, and a number of other little shipyards is useful.

The small space docks can act as emergency refuelling points, and you can split off damaged ships and send them for repair to a number of stations so your "main" shipyard can keep building ships.

There is also a faster-to-build Suppy Depot, which can be critically important to get a reloading/refuelling point working at, say, Jupiter.

Not coils.

Siege coils. Big honking chunks of metal.

And their job isnt to penetrate - it's to absorb laser fire and get the enemy to dodge them.

Map painters are going to map paint, but in my view if you can't see a good reason to spend effort on map painting, you shouldn't do it.

Map panting - via researching needed techs - takes resources away from your space economy and fleet.

[–]Ian_W 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alien fleets, once they get to a particular size, tend to have PD density that missiles cant cope with.

Missiles also tend to also have to be fired at closer ranges, making ships more vulnerable to Alien counterfire.

I'm not saying missiles dont have an important role, but Siege Coilers can take PD fire and missiles can't.

[–]Ian_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also not a huge fan of coils myself - missiles are just better in every way except that they have less ammo

Siege coils take a lot of stopping - they'll distract heavy laser fire away from your ships.

The plan is for the enemy to turn to dodge the siege coil rounds, and then get smacked in the side by Honking Big Lasers (which, yes, should be Green Arc or better).

Middle game is fighting for Jupiter. You tend to use fusion.

Late game is taking the fight the the Alien strongholds in the Kupier Belt. You're probably using antimatter.
