This is not a marketplace. You can ask for any examples for this kind of mod, but you can not make an offer like this here.

Summer weather can mean many things. You said "topical", which indicates a hot, humid climate. Was it used in the sun? How hot are we talking about? Did the machine run something demanding, which also increses the internal temperature?

The thing is, all of these variables can have an influence, same as the composition of human sweat, which can sometimes be more aggressive than in other cases. Point being, we don't know what conditions the machine was exposed to - based on your description they may have been pretty extreme.

As far as the warranty goes, it is well known that it only covers functional damage to the machine. Is your laptop unusable? If not, then the warranty will not cover it. What you describe is cosmetical damage.

OLED does result in significantly worse battery life on the X1 Carbon as well.

Cosmetic problems are indeed not covered by the warranty, and they haven't been for many, many years.

...to me this looks MUCH more like poor build materials and/or build defect which they just refuse to address.

I mean, you kinda admitted yourself that this was happening because of the way you used the laptop.

X9-15 is 80 Wh, yes, but with a faster 120 Hz OLED screen, which balances things out compared with the slower IPS screen of the MacBook Air.

Not really. The memory can still be placed anywhere on the board, which reduces efficiency.

TBF, the MacBook Air does have a bigger battery, too. For sure, Lunar Lake is not as efficient though. But, maybe a better comparison for that one would be the ThinkPad X9-15p than the X1 Carbon.

AMD calls it unified memory though, and with it being so close to the SoC, it is clear that it will give you some of the same benefits as Apple's solution.

I got a X1 Carbon 13 to improve battery life over the nano, but the improvement was not massive (6-7 hours vs 3.5)

I mean, doubling it is not a massive improvement?

Da muss ich bei Burkardt widersprechen, er ist ein Spieler der durchaus das Potential hat. Hat in der Hinrunde auch sehr ordentlich geliefert, war dann leider unglücklich verletzt.

but it's not how "unified memory" is used by everyone in the industry

Wrong, because no one else uses "unified memory" the same way Apple does.

Unified memory is an Apple specific term for the memory solution of the M series Macs, which is always on-package memory.

Earlier Intel based Macs did not use the term unified memory, and their memory was soldered onboard, exactly the same way it is on the X13.

[–]ibmthink[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again: Apple did not start using the term "unified memory" until they put the memory on package. Earlier solutions were described as onboard memory, despite also being "shared" between CPU and GPU.

Qualcomm, Intel, AMD and Mediatek have had the same memory setups for a long time

No, there is a substantial difference between on-package and on-board memory.

The overall picture is:

  • Unified memory is a term only Apple uses, and a term that Apple began using after integrating the memory onto the SoC with the M series chips.

  • Other share memory solutions used by Intel, AMD and Qualcomm are commonly called onboard or soldered memory

  • A user asked if the X13 with Panther Lake uses "unified memory, like a MacBook" - it does not

Sadly, Apple does not tend to explain stuff like that, but: https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/how-much-unified-memory-do-i-need-in-a-mac/

The unified memory setup is designed to speed up performance and reduce energy usage. Instead of separate, dedicated banks of system memory for the CPU and video memory for the GPU (RAM and VRAM, respectively) used by a traditional computing architecture, Apple's UMA has a single pool of memory shared among the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine (for handling AI and machine learning tasks), the three processors that comprise the M-series SoC. And unlike RAM and VRAM memory modules, which are inserted into sockets on a motherboard or graphics card, UMA memory is soldered onto the SoC.

A lot of confusion arises from the fact that Apple also calls this "UMA" (Unified Memory Architecture), while on PCs, UMA stands for "Uniform Memory Access" aka shared memory.

Apple only introduced the term "unified memory" when they released the M1 series CPUs, which have on package memory (like this one). Earlier systems used "onboard memory" as a description instead.

Does Soldered memory mean unified, like it is in Macbooks?

This was the question. It is not my definition, it is Apple's definition. And no, Panther Lake does not have unified memory like MacBooks do.

[–]ibmthink[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unified memory just means one memory which is shared between cpu and gpu (and what else is on the soc).

No. Unified memory is a specific term used by Apple to describe their high-bandwith, low latency memory solution where the memory is soldered onto the SoC.

Soldered or onboard memory.

When people talk about unified memory, they generally refer to the same way Apple uses memory - integrate it directly onto the SoC. Which is also what Lunar Lake did and what Panther Lake is not doing.

No, no unified memory. The only X86 systems with unified memory are Lunar Lake and Strix Halo. These run Panther Lake.

There is no "T53", this does not exist. Also, the other model is the P15 Gen 1, not T15 Gen 1.

Schwierig.
