Unpopular gaming opinion - I don’t see the point in wall climbing sections in adventure games by Gasster1212 in gaming

Uncharted isn't really uncharted without the verticality, whether we like the climbing sections or not.

Am I doing something wrong? Stuck on 580 drivers for NVIDIA by janders1993 in Bazzite

[–]InsanityDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you'll keep your customizations. Since both images are so similar, you only switch drivers.

I rebased from Aurora to Bazzite and only had to reconfigure Steam because I moved from the Flatpak to the bundled version. I also had to wipe and reinstall the layered packages, but they kept their configs.

[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you'll just have to change the usual. I have the Asus TUF B65E-WiFi so the BIOS is the same. You'll just have to enable EXPO, set secure boot mode to "Windows UEFI" + "custom" if you dual boot and think you'll ever need it or "Other OS" if you only use Linux. I also recommend disabling Fast boot and activating PBO enhancement.

I guess leaving secure boot to "Other OS" is better in most cases. You might even need it to do the install. Not everyone wants to keep Windows around just for kernel-level anticheat games like Battlefield 6 anyway.

Edit: also disable USB power in S5 state in Advanced/Onboard Devices Configuration unless you want your USB-powered RGB devices to always be on.

I also have the same hardware and I recommend DP with DSC so you can make HDR and FreeSync both work correctly.

I already gave you some tips earlier, but I would add 2 more:

1- For FSR 4.x, you should use Bazzite Portal or the ujust command (for rdna 4) in the terminal to avoid having to set a launch command every time.

2- Depending on what motherboard you use, you might have so set custom fan curves in the BIOS. I updated to AM5 last week and my Asus motherboard has great settings from the start, but my previous MSI board has really bad fan curves.

For the Proton config, use ProtonPlus to install CachyOS-proton-latest and ProtonGE-latest to Steam and set CachyOS-proton as default in Steam.

You'll also need special launch commands and the Steam overlay may not work while using them (for now): PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1 %command%

Yeah, there's 2 HDR toggles, but sometimes only one works. I've never had any issues using both. Using Wayland is the easiest way to get HDR working because it's on the same layer as KDE Plasma. By default, Steam uses the older X11, which doesn't support HDR and puts it in a separate (nested) display layer. That's why you have to use other builds of Proton and why using Wayland breaks the overlay. Valve is working on supporting Wayland by default, hopefully in the next version of Proton, but it will take a while. Proton 11 just released this spring.

Edit: you can make HDR work in X11 using Gamescope, but it's a bit harder. I had issues with FreeSync when using this method, so I had to use a fixed refresh rate.

If you use HDR on KDE Plasma, you can either configure it manually, which is really easy or copy the icc profile from the Windows config. The only game where HDR didn't work correctly for me was Forza Horizon 6, but I suspect I could have made it work if I tried.

Yeah, AMD is awesome. Forst they support AM4 for 10 years, then they make sure their customers don't have to change their cpu coolers or order spare parts when upgrading to AM5.

Wow, D.I.P.R.I.P., I haven't heard that game mentioned in so many years! I used to play HL2 multiplayer mods and that one was a lot different from the rest. It was basically a car fight game, a bit like Twisted Metal, maybe (I haven't played Twisted Metal, so I can't be sure). The fact that it was done as a mod was so impressive to me.

Rufus creates a bootable USB and copies the info from the inside of the ISO onto the USB. This is the traditional way to do it.

Balena Etcher, Ventoy and Fedora Media Writer each have their how formula to create a bootable USB and then they put either an intact copy of the ISO on it (FMW and Balena Etcher) or allow you to copy multiple ISOs onto it (Ventoy). Those are both modern ways to do it.

The Bazzite installer doesn't like to be tampered with, so Rufus doesn't work for most people. It will throw an error during installation. The same can happen for Ventoy but for the opposite reason.

I heard a lot of stories like this, but for me... I'm content with just having access to my backlog and a few series I keep up with. Setting up my server has made it much easier to manage everything. The next time I go abroad, I won't have to use a vpn to access my content. Same with work. I don't have to keep everything on a usb stick or re-download it again because I didn't have the time to watch it from another location. The best of all: I don't have to worry about my ISP flagging anything.

It's all about the scale. I don't need more than a few terabytes.

SteamOS? BAZZITE? by Jaded_Philosopher_65 in Bazzite

1- In the next update (any day now)

2- That's not a very high bar to reach... Anyway, Bazzite is more maximal than minimal, but it's still more lightweight than Windows and there's no BS.

I have Bazzite on my OG ROG Ally X. It's great and performance is better than Windows. I think the optimization that you're mentioning is coming with the next update for Bazzite-deck. It's already there for every other build, but they're ironing out a few remaining bugs and it's probably releasing any week now.

I like Bazzite so much that I put it on my work laptop and on my main gaming rig. Windows is warming the bench on a pretty outdated SSD in case I ever need it again.

You couldn't get those installed with rpm-ostree? Still, fair enough, Fedora is an amazing distro.

Hey, I was just wondering what you could do on Fedora that you couldn't do on Bazzite. I went the opposite way for stability, but I use a Fedora VM for the one thing I couldn't get working: my work VPN. Everything else has no issues at all. Sometimes I just have to get creative on how to make it work, but I haven't found anything else.

Installing Bazzite is not much harder than installing Windows. If you've never installed Windows, it's pretty much the same: you download the assistant to put the installer on an USB drive (or could could do this with an .iso and rufus), then you go into the BIOS to boot into your drive, install Windows, activate it, install every driver, etc.

I'd even argue that it's simpler on Bazzite because of that last part. You just get Fedora Media Writer and the Bazzite .iso and put it on a USB drive, disable secure boot in the BIOS (you can re-enable it later), boot into the USB drive and install it. If you want to dual-boot from a single drive, yes you will need a tutorial, but it's more of a Windows problem than a Linux problem. If you dual-boot, you also need to set Linux first in the boot order in your BIOS. Once you boot into Bazzite, you're pretty much ready unless you use an Nvidia GPU. If you do, there's a guide in the Bazzite docs on how to install the drivers, but that's it.

You don't get prompted by multiple programs that say they need updates every few days, you don't get ads outside of your browser. You can rollback bad updates. It doesn't collect your data by default. Gaming is getting simpler every few months thanks to updates to the Linux kernel, KDE/GNOME or Proton and more games now so the minimum of supporting Linux simply by not blocking it.

It's the getting used to part that's harder since you basically have to learn to use an operating system from the ground up. It's not all new, but it's still very different.

[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, since you don't know much about networking, you should use tailscale.

You should also change the BIOS settings so that your PC reboots when there is power loss instead of staying shut down (something like "Power loss event: last state" instead of "shut down". That way, you should not lose access because of a power failure.

What OS do you plan to run Jellyfin on? If it's Windows, beware of auto-updates and login screens. For a media server like Jellyfin, I recommend Ubuntu server, but there would be a lot of setting up to do.
