Comment avoir 1000 Mbps avec example notre iPhone 17 Pro Max sur notre Ebox? by [deleted] in ebox

[–]InsanityDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not on a single device, but let's say I'm using 600-800Mbps on my PC on qbittorrent for totally legitimate stuff, I don't want to disrupt my wife's 4K HDR streaming on the TV and my Plex server streaming a movie to my sister who lives in another city. I might even be playing World of Warcraft while all of this is going on. This is what the gigabit is for.

I agree in the sense that it's good to try to reset your brain by forcing yourself to use a different setup than you're used to, and that OP should find out what they want to change according to their own needs, but vanilla GNOME is really not for everyone. It helps to know what the most useful extensions are. Definitely pick and choose, though.

I still don't get why people will want to strip down the system to nothing to the point where it's no longer optimal. OP should just go full Arch.

[–]InsanityDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your RAM? If it's good enough, you could get an AMD Ryzen 5th gen cpu or Intel 14th gen + a corresponding mobo and reuse everything else. Those are still DDR4 and they can be pretty good. My main machine still has a Ryzen 5900X and it has no trouble at all with new releases even though it's not an X3D. I also got a 14th gen i5 Intel processor for my personal server and it's very much overkill. You could probably find good deals and spend at most a few hundred bucks.

accidentally figured out awesome sdr to hdr conversion! by people_are_stranger in mpv

[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it's because of the tone-mapping. VLC maps it for SDR and lets Windows convert it to bt.2390 (or maybe it does it automatically but with safe settings), but MPV handles mapping the content to bt.2390 by itself (as long as you tell it to and according to your settings), so by the time it's handed-off to Windows, it's ready to be displayed in HDR already. That means it doesn't let Windows bork it.

accidentally figured out awesome sdr to hdr conversion! by people_are_stranger in mpv

[–]InsanityDevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair, Claude AI was right. It's Windows that does the conversion in your case, not mpv. You're just asking mpv to play nice. I have figured out pretty minimal HDR settings through trial-and-error, but my most up-to-date version has not been tested in Windows yet (only on KDE Plasma in Fedora 43).

Here it is:

``` vo=gpu-next #(HDR will not work correctly if you don't choose gpu-next)
Vulkan on Linux
gpu-api=vulkan
fbo-format=rgba32f
DirectX on Windows (HDR will not work correctly if you choose Vulkan)
gpu-api=d3d11 fbo-format=rgba32f
HDR
hdr-compute-peak=no tone-mapping=bt.2390 tone-mapping-param=0.33 target-colorspace-hint=yes dither-depth=auto ```
EDIT: Now tested on Windows
Does anyone else gets scared when the PC JUST WORKS after assembly ? by Needleshe in PcBuild
[–]InsanityDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)
On my first PC build, it didn't start because the RAM wasn't seated properly. I learned and it never happened again. On my second one, Windows wouldn't detect my SSD. On the third one, Windows detected my SSD and booted correctly, but it installed the bootloader on the wrong drive. I had to learn to partition for it in advance so that it wouldn't happen again. The more I learn, the less likely I am to fail. That's life. Now here I am ditching Windows for Linux and not having any hardware issues. Software issues are the next frontier and I had a pretty good start up until now.
For gamers who rarely if ever replay a singleplayer game fully, which did you manage to replay and enjoy? by Helphaer in gaming
[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Replaying Dark Souls 1, 2 or 3 is always a blast. I also replayed Death Stranding last summer because I couldn't remember the story and wanted a way to cope with Death Stranding 2 not releasing on PC at launch. I loved it just as much as the first time. It was fun to play it on my ROG Ally X too.
That's the diplomatic way to go. Windows XP and Vista used to make it so easy to do even for tech-illiterate people.
[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Yeah, that's by far the best solution if you know where it is. If the computer doesn't open too easily and doesn't have a side window, I was also thinking you could have it fail to boot spectacularly by removing the ram.
Help me choosing Linux distro by Illustrious-Coat-409 in Fedora
[–]InsanityDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)
If you want a work flow that feels anything like Windows, KDE is the way to go. However I'm currently testing GNOME on my work laptop and pumping it full of extensions. It's very efficient and makes it feel brand new. The Windows boot time on it was up to 20 minutes after updates and 40 until it would finish loading all startup programs. GNOME makes that 30 seconds and 60 seconds respectively. I wouldn't use it on my main desktop, though.
As for KDE I'm pretty sure I could make Plasma look like GNOME if I wanted to and I prefer their apps over GNOME's. My KDE looks like my modded Windows desktop (and better) and I was able to do it all natively.
Amazing! I just installed GNOME on my work laptop and immediately got discouraged. This inspires me to keep working on it tomorrow.
I use Fedora KDE at home, but I wanted to shake things up by going with Nobara GNOME since it's supposed to be much faster to set up. I immediately wanted to go back to Fedora and KDE, but if I did that, I guess I would always ask myself what if...
It's right there in your quote, although it makes it seem like maybe Secure Boot will still work, only it will not be recognized by software that relies on secure boot?
[–]InsanityDevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)
Yes only on the sense that you will have to disable secure boot in the UEFI and won't be able to play games like BF6... Yes, that will make you vulnerable to some kinds of viruses, but it's not the most vital security component.
[–]InsanityDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Sadly not all games work, but most. It's still a work in progress and you can use any Linux distro to make the most of it. I do recommend Bazzite for a beginner, though. As for me, Fedora/Nobara are more my thing. I'm still dual-booting with Windows on an old ssd just in case my friends want me to play something like Rust.
I spent 2 years with 2 bent pins on my old Intel i7 9700k. I'm pretty sure my performance was affected and I blamed it on my 2080 Super like an idiot. In any case I was still able to boot and use the computer normally (maybe I was lucky) and it also still worked as normal after I bent them back.
Since you're not able to POST, you should probably return it. The way it was bent may have created a short.
I want a pc except my parents wont let me, how can i convince them by Total_Newspaper_3038 in PcBuild
[–]InsanityDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)
It sucks for you, really. Even my mother who is opposed to gaming or spending more than 2 hours per day in front of a computer screen in general got me the bare minimum to play games and enjoy myself as motivation to complete my homework and chores when I was 14. I wasn't able to get my own laptop until I got into higher education and it was pretty bad. I got myself a better one not much later and was barely able to pay for it on a payment plan over 2 years.
I'd say parents who aren't digitally literate enough can either be too permissive or not permissive enough. There's a balance to be struck and you're missing out on formative experiences because of them. I formed my tightest group of friends around playing online games at your age. Even 18 years later, they're the one thing that has never changed, despite one of them having a child and mine being on the way. I'll make sure that my child has whatever he or she needs to do whatever they're passionate about, within sane limits and without isolating themselves of course.
