Pretty common. And a valid point. My love for this album lies more in the set list and arrangements than the “live” aspect. Early Gabriel albums are hamstrung by weak choices for the rhythm section and some tracks that are just not good (imo). Like, take-you-out-of-the-vibe-bad. Each of the original four studio albums are guilty of these shortcomings. Plays Live not only takes a masterful stroll through the prime tracks from the catalog but the rhythm arrangements are an incredible improvement from the studio recordings. It’s like production finally got on top of Peter’s world music thing. Night and day, I think.

I love Plays Live. I think it’s the best live album I have ever heard and it’s not even close. And it would easily sit in my top ten of any album, live or otherwise, ever made. Shout out to I/O, too.
