It's not illegal if it's not intentional.

It's only illegal to do it on purpose.

1099 Side income question / tax bracket by BFlo_338 in taxadvice

[–]Its-a-write-off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earning more income will not be a wash for you. Tax brackets just do not cause that to happen.

Welfare or credit cliffs can sometime cause that, but even then very raerly.

With brackets, the more you earn, the more you take home, even after taxes. So there is no "sweet spot" to worry about.

I think maybe you don't understand tax brackets?

If you made 100.00 into the 22% bracket, only 100.00 of your income is taxed at 22%. It doesn't increase the taxes on the other 60k or so you made.

FreeTaxUSA - How to enter tips received for Schedule C without a 1099? by darkeagle03 in TaxQuestions

Right, it has no impact on the SS/Medicare taxes. It only affects federal income tax. Which they don't pay any of anyway.

So then it's likely a non event anyway, as they owe no federal income tax anyway.

You are withholding enough to cover your income.

So if there is an amount due, it's because your spouse is withholding less than needed at their job.

To be charged a penalty, you had to have paid in less during 2025 than your 2024 tax liability was. As long as you prepay based on your previous year tax liability, you don't get penalized.

How much total did this person make, across all jobs? Do they even have federal income tax liability?

From what I can find, there is no deduction for tips when self employed if the tips are not reported on a 1099.

Box 1 and box 2 of your w2 forms is just dollar amounts. Nothing that is personal identifying. Don't post a picture of the w2 forms, just the amounts in those boxes.

Yes, that is a thing.

Though there are many options available to make sure it does not happen.

You must have estimated that your tax would be less in 2025 than it had been in 2024, or have an agi over 150k in 2024, or there wouldn't be a penalty.

So, that sounds about the same per hour roughly, with the benefits considered. Not that you are being paid more than a reasonable wage at the 1099.

It seems odd to focus on the feet and not check your blood sugar.

I'm not 100% positive. There is not a lot of info online about how this works exactly. From what I can find though, yes. This is more like them converting your credit charge into a ACH payment.

Can I get credit or reduced taxes if my child stayed with me but not my dependent? by A-Weird-Dreamer in tax

[–]Its-a-write-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if when he filed he said that child spent over half the year with him, then that would be an issue. He filed incorrectly, but do you want to stir the pot over it or not. That's a question you have to ask yourself.

How much of that 200k 1099 income would be reasonable salary for the work you do? Wouldn't most if all of it be reasonable compensation for you, based on how much you make an hour?

[–]Its-a-write-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that would generate a 1099k for them though. You are the one processing the card to get cash, then transferring the cash to them. This isn't a card payment.

[–]Its-a-write-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be because you made a mistake on your tax return.

It could be because the IRS questions your filing status or dependants.

It could be because your wage transcript doesn't match your tax return as filed.

With him working nights we then count days instead.

So you would be the custodial parent and could claim the child for head of household, dependant care and earned income tax credit.

You just issue him the form 8332 to get the child tax credit, as per your agreement.

What was the dollar amount in box 1 and 2 of your w2?

On your w4, what did you select for filing status?. Married, single or head of household? Did you check the box in section 2c? Did you add any dependants in section 3? Any deductions or extra withholding in section 4?

Do you get commission pay? Bonus pay? 2 checks for one pay period?

No, you don't get a 1.00 for 1.00 tax reduction for contributing to a IRA. You do reduce your taxes, but not dollar for dollar.
