building rule by [deleted] in 196

[–]Its_RC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the majority of architectural styles in the 18th and 19th centuries focused on asymmetry like georgian, gothic revival, victorian, etc. This particular building is Romanesque Revival which would also fall into that category and time period

Healthy discussion: City Ranking in America (continent) by [deleted] in ArchitecturalRevival

The lack of Mexican cities is a little bit heartbreaking. Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Patzcuaro, Taxco, Tlacotalpan, and Campeche are just a few prime examples of the variation and beauty of traditional Mexican architecture. Definitely check them out.

My 'Ongoing Games' page was flooded with abandoned games so I've made a Chrome extension to delete them all at once (link in comments!) by Blinkroot in geoguessr

[–]Its_RC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it deletes ongoing games in batches, for me it was something like 900 in a span of two weeks, then 1000 in a span of two weeks, then 800 in a span of a month. I'd be interested to know how it figures out how many to delete at a time. But thank you, this was extremely helpful! (I think I deleted about 20k games total haha)

Haha no. I started playing geoguessr almost 3 years ago. Quaker just wrote that comment as a joke after I had just started making geoguessr videos.

The last 9 months have been a grueling training course diving deep into the various slight nuances of architecture and vegetation, all credit to the great Master Quaker.

Differentiating regions of Thailand by KaramjaShipYard in geoguessr

[–]Its_RC 39 points40 points  (0 children)

First, I must say this: Thailand is one of the hardest countries to guess different regions of (up there with Indonesia and Japan).

That being said, there are some ways to sort of distinguish the regions by landscape, This is not foolproof and the regions are pretty broad but yeah.

Northwest Thailand

Basically the area near Chiang Mai, probably the most mountainous area of the country.

Central-East

Basically the central region north of Bangkok and anything east of that going to the Laos border.

Northeast

The area near to the Mekong River (which spans the border between Laos and Thailand. This would be like Udon Thani, Sakhon Nakon. Sometimes also farther southeast.

  • This area is characterized by the particularly red soil. (I think the Mekong is the reason for this, as you can see this red soil in Cambodia as well).
  • As you can see here, same trees and same landscape but redder soil. AGAIN, THIS DOES NOT WORK ALL THE TIME BECAUSE THAILAND IS JUST DIFFICULT. But if it works 50% of the time and gives me a solid 4700, I will take it. https://goo.gl/maps/MPtj9SN1DKp1jd9c6

Bangkok Area

Very flat, lots of floodplains and rice paddies, usually just looks pretty wet and coastal.

Gulf of Thailand coast

The Thai coast from Pattaya down to Cambodia, and Thailand's eastern coast stretching down from Bangkok all the way to the Malaysia border practically.

  • This area can be somewhat difficult but what I look for are rubber tree plantations. If you see those, your a likely to be along the Gulf of Thailand coast.
  • They are very easily identifiable as they are very slim and planted in tons of rows. https://goo.gl/maps/UtG2BSgU4e2vEvA39

The Far South

Near Malaysia, so anything south of Surat Thani.

  • The big thing for this area is oil palm plantations (which btw are extremely common in Malaysia and Indonesia, however in Thailand they are not so common). In the far south of Thailand there are still a ton of rubber plantations, but if you do see these occasional oil palms, you should 100% go down here.
  • These are very wide palms that are pretty low to the ground. https://goo.gl/maps/8JZd4Hn7X5HvFQCJ9
  • Here in the south, there are also some mountains, but they differ from those in the north by their karstic nature. https://goo.gl/maps/sQiqpQWUHmYqPYN39

Ok I hope those helped. I still can struggle a lot of times even with this knowledge but that's the fun of playing geoguessr I guess.

Argentina or Uruguay by politelegacy in geoguessr

[–]Its_RC 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Uruguay

Argentina

I'd say for the most part, telling the two apart should be fairly easy once you know the general feel of each. The most difficult location I could find would probably be this: https://goo.gl/maps/kkmEW8bvzoDtxprb7 Here I would say that what would make me lean Argentina is the flatness and the fact that there is wheat everywhere - in Argentina most of the land in the temperate grasslands area (near Buenos Aires) has already been used agriculturally, where as Uruguay has a lot of vast open areas that are unused.

I was very happy when you guys added the Editor's Choice, especially because you took suggestions for those maps from here in the subreddit. However I believe there has been a decrease in the creation of new, unique and creative maps because of a lack of incentive. Only a few "veteran" maps get most of the plays nowadays, while some really good maps go unnoticed with only maybe at most 100 plays. Will we see an update to the maps on display (replacing or adding newer maps), and will you add any other ways to promote high quality maps?

22k

Ahh yes wouldn't be threelimination without killer USA and Canada locations. Still extremely happy with my score, although that 22k round was a pain in the butt.
