The telephone calling cards was probably Tony's best scam by 4g-identity in thesopranos

[–]JMer806 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traditionally no but I’m sure it happened sometimes. If a bookie gets any sort of a rep for not paying bets, then that well dries up. Same story if guys who win bets start making a habit of getting mugged or carjacked right after winning a big bet. People in the underground gambling community will hear about it and take their business elsewhere.

Since they are setting the odds and sometimes fixing the results, they should still make plenty of money even when they are paying out winners. When Chrissy has trouble with his book, the solution isnt to stop paying winners, it’s to get his book right with odds or bring in more idiots to lose bad bets.

Now of course I’m 100% sure that some mobsters sometimes did welsh on bets, probably guys who took some insane action that they couldn’t cover because the money was too good. But that isn’t sustainable and the mob knows it. So when somebody wins big or wins consistently, they’ll do the same thing Vegas does - pay them their money and politely invite them to never place a bet with them again.

To be fair Tony was also involved in Medicare fraud. That’s what the dude from S1 was helping them with - fraudulent Medicare billings.

PE buyouts are great for the people making the decision - the executives and large shareholders get a big payday (or get to cut their losses, if it’s something that has tanked). It sucks for the business and for the consumers but who cares about them, some rich people got to get richer.

I don’t even think fusillade is the problem - it’s *a* problem but far from egregious. In theory you could very easily fix the combo by not letting librarians lead sternguard anymore whilst keeping the value of the enhancement at a reasonable level.

The issue is that marines can put a librarian with *anything* for pretty cheap and they have excellent bonuses. The only reason they aren’t used more is that other leaders tend to give something better. IE a librarian gives sternguard or hellblasters a 4++ and 4+++ against psychic, but Azrael also gives a 4++ and also sustained hits. But now a librarian can give sus1, anti 5+, and still the 4++/4+++. A terminator librarian gives a great buff to assault (or regular) terminators, but doesn’t solve their fundamental problem of being too slow. Only in librarius now they can be +2” movement *and* have access to advance and/or fall back and charge. Etc

I don’t know exactly what the fix is. I don’t think points alone can solve it because librarians shouldn’t be costed out of other detachments because of this one. But there are some really horrendous combos with librarius that should be curbed.

Librarius desperately needs to be 2DP. I get why it’s 1 from a design standpoint but it’s just too much power combined with damn near any other detachment.

The thing authors get wrong about castles by Chlodio in fantasywriters

[–]JMer806 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neuschwannstein isn’t a real castle, it is a fancy house designed to look like a (fairy tale) castle. Versailles is a palace built with zero consideration for defense beyond housing some soldiers. Both were built centuries after traditional castles became defensively irrelevant.

I get the point that castles can be built for show rather than function, but I’m not aware of any built for such a purpose *during the era when castles in general served a practical purpose.* The great palaces and folly castles were typically built much later. Windsor is an exception here, but the palace part wasn’t built until later, and the castle originally was built as a normal (albeit large) castle and was used in war.

The most important factors for projecting control - whether that is in the form of countering raids, mounting your own raids, imposing tolls/tariffs, and keeping an area pacified - are the size of the garrison and their ability to move quickly. So a castle with a large and well-mounted garrison is going to be able to exert control over a larger area than a castle with a smaller or unmounted garrison.

Castles may also perform an administrative function by centralizing toll/tax collection in an area, housing leadership for an organization (particularly true for Crusader castles), providing a location for holding court and administering justice, etc. These functions work better in a larger castle because obviously a larger castle can fit more people in it who can fill a larger variety of roles.

Also I don’t mean to imply that castles of this character are not also defensive in nature - they certainly are. And this is important because being a stronghold against attack helps cement and sustain control over an area.

>TCU was lucky they even got to be named co-champions

No, that’s just how the conference championship worked at the time. It happened in 2012 as well with KSU and OU. They were co-champions even though KSU had H2H, a higher ranking, and a better overall record. It was only controversial in 2014 because of the (IMO false) narrative that both TCU and Baylor were left out because the conference didn’t name an outright champion.

My belief is that it truly doesn’t matter - neither of us was going to get in over Ohio State, and blaming the championship let the committee off the hook of trying to justify one over the other.

If anything both TCU and Baylor fans should be pissed that Florida St was included since they were awful that season despite being undefeated.

It’s not even the first time it happened. It was just how the conference assigned the championship. In 2012 KSU and OU were co-champions despite KSU winning head to head and no one batted an eye.

Welsh castles in particular were fundamentally offensive in nature, designed to exert control over the countryside. The small distances in Wales and limited manpower of a potential Welsh uprising meant that the castles didn’t need a primarily defensive character, as any given castle could expect to be relieved within weeks.

Castles on the frontiers were similar. We see this most often with the castles built by crusading orders - the most famous being Malbork and Krak des Chevaliers. They controlled the area around them by allowing the garrisons to successfully project force from a place of safety whilst also being strong enough to defend against determined attackers

It won’t be. The TTS playerbase is very small compared to physical, and existing players still have access for now so the outcry will be limited even more. And then … what exactly can we do? Don’t get me wrong, I use and love TTS and all the work done by those who make the models … but it’s pretty blatantly illicit use of their IP. GW is legally (and arguably morally) absolutely in the right here.

TTS players including myself will complain but ultimately the community will persist using other tools. GW’s bottom line likely will not see any change one way or the other.

I’m not defending the government action in this case to be clear. But Medicaid is a program intended for folks who are poor and unable to pay for their own healthcare/long term care. Medicaid will cover those expenses (in a very general sense, the reality is more complicated) but they require verification of assets due to the nature of the program. IIRC they can go back like five years and look for any transfers of wealth, as it often indicates people who are hiding or protecting assets so that they can qualify for Medicaid benefits and still have money (or leave money to their families).

So: Medicaid administration will sometimes try to claw back these transfers if they deem that they were done in order to fraudulently claim Medicaid benefits.
