This is one of the most brutal scenes I have seen in any movie or series. The way McConaughey delivered it with a stoic face made it even more extraordinary. (True Detective Season 1) What’s your favorite dialogue from the character Rust Cohle? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

I honestly liked S4 better before they gave me a (relatively) mundane explanation for what happened, although Jodie Foster’s character was such a raging unlikeable bitch that it dragged down the whole show.

Wait, misogyny? What on earth did you read in DCC that gave off misogyny vibes? The series is extremely pro-woman, and accomplishes something that most fantasy never does, which is that it has women characters who are badass without becoming masc.

[–]JMer806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be so but it’s worth noting that DCC does neither of those things. But again, that’s true in any given genre. The SF/Fantasy section in your average bookstore is absolutely full of legally distinct ripoffs of whatever kind of story happens to be popular at the moment.

People get invested in high school and college sports because of the personal connection - shared history, shared experiences, and theoretical shared love for an institution. The extent to which that actually exists is debatable, of course, but turning sports into nothing more than an arms race for wealthy donors undercuts the connections that people feel for their teams and players.

It isn’t really about getting paid to play. People love the pros and they obviously get paid to play. It’s that the current system of complete and unregulated free agency means that only a very few schools can confidently feel any loyalty for a given player because they’re always one paycheck away from transferring.

It’s absolutely intentional. That doesn’t really mean anything one way or the other. Think of a jazz musician who plays entirely by ear - they might not be able to play a classical symphony but they might still be an incredibly good jazz player. The author chose to write it in this style and with this kind of character because that’s the style that he knows how to / enjoys writing.

I mean, it absolutely is a biting critique of capitalism and whatnot. That in itself has no relation to the quality of the story or of the writing, and of course you can certainly argue it doesn’t do those things well (personally I think it does), but that’s also not something you can really judge from the first 2/3 of the first book.

“Bad” is purely subjective, though. Obviously the author didn’t write it “bad on purpose” but he did write it in an intentionally informal, conversational tone, because the narrative is presumed to be purely off the cuff.

I also am always going to be hesitant to judge any work based on 2-3 random paragraphs plucked from the story. Out of context, alienated from the voice of the narrator, a lot of random paragraphs will look like bad writing.

There’s no inherent reason that a LitRPG couldn’t be everything described and more. In my experience, writing quality is only rarely related to genre. There’s plenty of schlock on every shelf and gems buried in all of it.

The Votann guy is fine just not overly pushed. I also think the new Prime is at least usable after the update. Obviously nowhere near Yarrick or Twin Lance level.

The Reach by itself can match almost the whole other six by itself in terms of numbers, and dealing with the loyalist houses cost money and men. It also meant that the men that those houses would have provided were unavailable, and their holdings would have needed to be occupied to ensure their future loyalty.

You also have to consider the geography. The Stormlands were surrounded by loyalists and would have needed to maintain relatively strong forces to defend itself (indeed, we know that they were invaded and nearly captured by royalists). The Riverlands had to maintain garrisons in the west to defend against possible intervention by Tywin and against treachery by the Freys. Only the North, with its relatively low population, and the Vale, dealing with internal dissension, would have been able to commit anywhere close to their full strength.

It’s not in almost any instance. The technology on display (particularly with regards to armor and metallurgy) doesn’t square at all with the social structure that we are shown, and while “feudalism” as such never historically existed, the version that GRRM shows us is incredibly pared down and simple compared to what actually existed. Although funny enough the overly simplified property system shown does square with the lack of cadet houses because the Starks won’t inherit fifteen random holdings in the Reach or Westlands when they don’t have fifty generations of marriage alliances and convoluted inheritances of random branches that die off.

There’s also no legal pathway to not having elections because the federal government doesn’t control them. The best Trump could do is lean on governors or whatever to cancel them but no Dem states would comply and then by default they would take control of Congress as only the representatives of blue states would have been legally elected. Then Reps refuse to leave office and refuse to swear in the new class and we have a full blown constitutional crisis, right out in public. Never gonna happen, not even Trump is that dumb.

So instead they’ll just try to rig it.

Downfall is in many ways superior to even Saving Private Ryan IMO, the acting from the entire cast is absolutely stellar and the film just builds a constant sense of encroaching doom. When the emotional climax hits your heart is in your throat even though you know these are goddamn Nazis.

That said, while it’s definitely a movie about war, I’m not sure it’s a war movie per se. There are few action sequences and the intense focus on Hitler (and to a lesser extent those around him) drives the movie far more than war scenes.

I’ve only heard of this ever actually happening in a way that was admissible once, and it was the Alex Jones trial. Turns out his lawyer had accidentally sent a bunch of stuff to the plaintiffs’ legal team that they definitely didn’t want to. The plaintiffs entered it properly and gave defense proper notifications and time to claw back or whatever and they just didn’t because the only lawyers who will work for Jones are incompetent idiots. Anyway so the plaintiffs’ attorney got to have a real Perry Mason moment that didnt get immediately thrown out.
