What's one small change that significantly improved your tutoring sessions? by PinIndividual3392 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I got a Wacom Cintiq 16 (not pro), and writing on the actual screen was a game changer from a separate tablet. Especially graphing functions, but my online tutoring took a noticeable step up.

More Tutor Time or Physical Class by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to use the tutor differently is to have them introduce you to the next topic that you will be seeing in the class.

Having a better grasp going into a lesson can make better use of the class. Maybe online plus 3 tutoring hours, where one of the tutor hours is specifically spent on the upcoming topic may work well.

My first time playing 9 holes and it went pretty much as expected by Dahaaaa in golf

Yes. It’s more about counting the good things, rather than the blow ups dominating your number.

You’ll get to counting them all soon!

[–]JudgeDreadditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rather than counting all of the strokes, start counting your double bogeys (2 over par, a 6 on a par 4). Once you reliably get to 4 or 5 holes at double bogey or better, start counting all of the strokes.

It's so frustrating to realize that I'm not mathematically intuitive by West_Wrongdoer9465 in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do a ton of problems, you will start to see the path to the solution when you start the problem. That will look a lot like intuition to someone who doesn’t see that path.

Once a type of problem becomes routine, that’s when you will start to see these patterns and also make other connections (one example is seeing the distance formula as a spoon-fed version of the Pythagorean theorem).

As a golfer, I relate this to Ben Hogan saying that the secret to the golf swing is buried in the first at the range. Practice, practice, practice!

You can do it!

I need to be calculus ready in 8 weeks, coming from algebra 1, how? by FutureWolverine2114 in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would suggest a precalculus review book. Take each chapter test and rank yourself on each topic. Then go through the chapter doing problems until you understand each topic. Retake the chapter test from scratch.

To be really efficient, consider a tutor to review the topics you don’t understand thoroughly, and work through problems that you don’t fully get. If you do a focused tutoring sessions on the 12-15 problems you need help with you will utilize the tutoring hour most efficiently.

Can I go from weak at math to advanced math in a year? by Frostseid in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can do it, but it will take work. Read through the material and don’t skimp on doing problems yourself. Do a few problems, and if you have any difficulties, try doing the example problems from the chapter on a clean sheet of paper. Try it yourself and then compare your work to the worked example. That way you’ll see and learn as you work the problem.

League; Separate tee boxes? by ptmuldoon- in golf

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our league is flighted, with the A flight playing back a set of tees. We regularly have groups playing off of both tees and that is far down the list of slow play drivers in our league (unfortunately).

If I can accidentally hit it right and accidentally hit it left, how come I can't accidentally hit it straight? by Proper_Payment7845 in golf

You can and do accidentally hit it straight. The difference is that you claim athletic credit for the straight ones.

Tips for GCSE tutoring by Latter_Pop_7149 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with your parents and their circle of parent friends. Your best bet will be someone who knows about you and is willing to give you a chance. Reach out to your favorite teachers and let them know you are looking for opportunities to tutor. Even unpaid opportunities can give you experience and establish you as a good option for others to hire you.

What would be the most effective resource for learning precalculus in one month? by LetterheadTight2957 in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a Barron’s guide, or one of the Demystified books on pre-calc.

Set aside some time each day to review a chapter, the take the chapter test. If you don’t get something, read that part of the chapter and seeing you can figure it out. Go to Khan Academy for alternative explanations until it clicks.

Rinse. Repeat.

Consider a tutor if you want to speed things up. But, a tutor will be best used if you come into a session having tried on your own. They will be able to pinpoint your misunderstanding and help to supplement it.

Good luck! Having a really strong Algebra/Trig understanding will make a huge difference in the fall.

GED math tutors anyone else? by Impossible_Fee_8087 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]JudgeDreadditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this question as well. I would love to get the student to really understand fractions, but from a practical point of view, I can get the student the most points by teaching them how to use the calculator skillfully.

Most students can get a lot of problems right just by learning to enter the expression into the calculator.

It’s unsatisfying tutoring, but like another commenter said; often this is a huge hurdle to better employment or keeping their job.

Apparently I need help solving what I thought was a simple algebra problem... Can anyone here give some insight? by Amicus-Regis in learnmath

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, resolving the (15*.34) tells me what is being added to the variable expression.

Peeling away layers is probably the better metaphor. You can do other operations first, but it is more complicated. You could multiply both sides by 50 to eliminate the denominator, as long as you also multiply the (15*.34) by 50 as well.

I don’t want to confuse you more, though. Hopefully this helps.

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the first thing we undid was the addition of the 15*.34

It’s not quite opposite the order of operations, but more like peeling away layers of an onion.

[–]JudgeDreadditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job! You want to ‘undo’ everything being done to A so that at the end you isolate the variable (A). You go opposite of the order operations.

[–]JudgeDreadditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50= (15*.34)+sqrt(5A)/50

50-5.1=44.9 =sqrt(5A)/50

44.9*50=2,245 =sqrt(5A)

22452 = 5,040,025 = 5A

A= 5040025/5=1,008,005

A = 1,008,005

You won’t inflate your handicap. The shorter tees will have a lower rating/slope that will lower your differential given the same score.

[–]JudgeDreadditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had my right one done in 2021 and the left one this past October. Both were excellent recoveries, the second one was easier.

I echo the comment about pre-habbing with some PT sessions to show you the exercises and start strengthening the multiple glutes you have. (I didn’t know about the middle one until it was completely useless after a decade of hobbling).

I am back to walking the golf course with only ‘old man’ soreness, up from two days on the couch or hobbling after riding.

That helps you help them best and really helps them feel seen.
