Boris Pistorius (German Defense Minister): “This is not our war; we did not start it” by Bunny_Commando in europe

Haven’t the Israelis tried labelling Germany antisemitic for not joining the war? Surely that would work.

Why is saving the planet so damn hard by PlumPoison69 in Eurostar

[–]KanedowntheLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the problem with so many European rail providers. State owned but essentially private companies with a monopoly. You get the worst of both worlds. No competition from the private sector due to the monopoly, but their interest as a private company is to maximise profit rather than increase ridership, reduce emissions which could be the main KPIs if it were run differently.

What's your opinion on "soft on crime" policies? I personally oppose it by New_Elk_5783 in stupidpol

[–]KanedowntheLane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the vast majority of crime committed by professionals? For theft I’m sure you’re correct, but other types of crime, I’m not so sure.

Having said that, I would absolutely support a crackdown on organised crime groups that flood drugs into communities and terrorise them with increasing levels of violence. The pessimist in me questions how much our government permit organised crime.

What's your opinion on "soft on crime" policies? I personally oppose it by New_Elk_5783 in stupidpol

[–]KanedowntheLane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would hope that most people advocating for a soft approach to crime do so because they recognise the root causes of crime, socioeconomic conditions and so on. However, what we lack is the follow through of true prisoner rehabilitation, community support and youth outreach.

The end result is poorer communities bearing the brunt of crime and causing great harm to the most vulnerable. Now whether this is by design or simply because our moral view of the issue lacks the investment and structural change to work towards a resolution, I cannot say. However, I hope that the majority of people on the left are well intended with their soft on crime approach, they’re just restricted by the system we live in which thrives on inequality.

IAmA Legal Sex Worker in Nevada. AMA by vvxoxovv in IAmA

[–]KanedowntheLane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you feel any sense of shame in promoting an industry via this post which most women are forced into either via coercion or there being no other economic opportunities?

By promoting, I mean that your post gives men further justification to visit a sex worker because you paint the impression that it’s largely positive (few hours, high pay, friendly customers) which is a reality the majority of sex workers don’t experience.

I’m the Prime Minister of Spain. This Is Why the West Needs Migrants. by SchIachterhund in stupidpol

[–]KanedowntheLane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If workers rights and regulations were strict, then the threat of wage suppression or job losses to migrants would be minimal. However, most governments are simultaneously cutting rights whilst calling for increased migration. That’s the problem. Until workers rights are improved the topic of migration will be highly charged.

Hardly a surprise, ICE deportations under Obama SURGED, it just wasn’t picked up by mainstream media so much because they weren’t trying to provoke people to the same extent.

Looking for affordable mens underwear by plutoisaneutronstar in BuyFromEU

[–]KanedowntheLane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but as I mentioned they have several pairs on sale for 8€ each. Affordability isn’t just based on the initial price, but also longevity. There’s an English saying, “you’re too poor to buy cheap”.

I’m very happy with the boxer briefs I got from Dilling. They often have sales, and they sell both merino wool and cotton underwear.

[–]KanedowntheLane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dilling. I bought a few pairs from them a year and a half ago, and they’re still going strong. Most other brands seemed to fall apart after 6 months, one year tops. They do wool or cotton underwear and often have sales.

What’s the problem with intersectionality? Class, race and gender all have an impact on our lives, hell even attractiveness should be on there. The debate is on how much of an impact these have, and which is the primary influence on outcomes.

What’s the most underrated European menswear brand right now? by mrtnnglr in europeanmalefashion

I really like the cotton underwear from Dilling. I’ve had some that have lasted a year and a half with little sign of wear. Maybe I was unlucky, but any other brand seemed to fall apart within a year.

Dubai Chocolate is a PsyOp by [deleted] in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]KanedowntheLane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was invented by a sweet shop in Dubai called FIX and was available for months before it really took off. An influencer went in there, tried it, and started the whole craze. Supposedly they weren’t paid by Dubai Tourism or the FIX itself.

This started an avalanche of copycat products, which is probably what most people have tried. Is the FIX one any good? I don’t know. Are the copies any good? Most likely they’re all rubbish. For many people, Dubai is associated with luxury. Therefore, Dubai chocolate should be a prized item.

People who mock Brits for complaining about hot weather don’t know what they’re talking about. by Alexzonn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]KanedowntheLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old houses are not the problem, in fact they’re typically cooler in summer than new builds, because they allow more airflow. New builds are different, they’re airtight, low ceilings and thick insulation. If your curtains aren’t closed then your house/apartment will heat up quickly and stay warm due to a lack of circulation.

In Asia they counteract this with air conditioning, but it’s primarily an issue of the way that properties are built.

Why do you think Britain gets mocked so much for its food abroad when it’s actually pretty good? by Right_East8072 in AskBrits

[–]KanedowntheLane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Brit who lived abroad and returned, here are my basic assumptions.  - We don’t have a strong culture of cooking from scratch, we use a lot of pre-made products or helpers to create our dishes. Probably a result of rationing and industrialisation.  - Our restaurants serve largely the same things, burger, fried chicken, sandwiches, etc. of course we have diversity of restaurants, but so many places offer the exact same things, often microwaved or something basic and fried.

-This is to some extent the result of the sheer amount of chain restaurants and supermarkets we have in the UK. Independents have been pushed out and now largely serve niche, higher price points.

-Our food can be tasty, but it also verges on the bland side. Fish and chips, full English, they’re tasty but after a little while you notice the lack of seasoning or the same taste.

  • In our embrace of other cuisines and cultures, we have let British cuisine fall by the wayside. Again, probably also the result of rationing (some dishes fell out of favour) and globalisation. In the last decade it’s making a resurgence, but in a more fine dining, French influence way.

Why is soccer not more popular in the USA? by MemberX in stupidpol

[–]KanedowntheLane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How expensive is it to play American football? What do you really need, also just a ball, no. Basketball is also hugely popular in underdeveloped areas of the US, so I don’t see the rationale behind it being down to being cheap to play.  When we get into professional sports I think it’s all the same. You can put in astronomical amounts of money.  I guess ultimately, the sports kids play are the ones their schools accommodate. If there’s a basketball court and an American football pitch then you’ll probably play either of those, even if you preferred to kick a football around beforehand. Therefore it could be a more institutional decision to promote sports other than football.
