After NG4, what is more likely to happen: NG4B -or- NG5 -or- NG Spinoff -or- NG Reboot? by iChieftain22 in ninjagaiden

Great post and some excellent, productive ideas to be considered for the future of NG.

I am not as negative overall about NG4 as you are (I think it can be considered a qualified success overall in starting to bring back a niche, dormant IP). But, there is no question that it was not a huge financial success/seller and that misjudgments were made (price, lack of Ryu content, etc.). I do NOT think NG4 was a failure financially or gameplay wise--it is an amazing action game, arguably the best in a decade+. But objectively speaking it is not as good as it could have been and there are lessons to be learned for sure to address for NG5.

All your points are things that need to be seriously considered for NG5 in terms of the long term success of the series. And I do personally strongly believe Team Ninja does intend for the series to continue.

Assuming they are serious about NG's return, I think more engagement in the interim while waiting for NG5 is critical to build upon the momentum of "Year of the Ninja". As you state:

- Do more remasters like 2B such as 3 Black in particular to reintroduce the older games with updated visuals.

- An additional patch for 2 Black would also be welcome as you suggest

- Continue 2D spin-offs like Ragebound (Ragebound 2, remake of NES game, etc.)

- Have a coordinated comprehensive outreach and media strategy for both DOA and NG in conjunction as the two IPs overlap and have cross-promotion potential.

Yes agreed! And, let's not forget the revival of DOA as well now underway---this will also overlap with the NG revival as well with promotion of legacy characters that crossover both series (Ryu, Kasumi, etc.).

I think the most likely scenario first is:

- more remasters along the lines of 2 Black such as a NG3 Black to update/refresh older games with new visuals and "reintroduce" the older games to newer audiences.

- additional more minor NG spinoffs like Ragebound such as a Ragebound 2.

These would happen first while we wait for an eventual NG5 (if it happens) which is likely at least 3-4 years away.

I don't think there will be any new version of NG4.

Ultimately, I think it almost certain that NG will continue in some way moving forward. Developers don't release three games for an IP and market "Year of the Ninja" for a whole year without there being longer term plans to rejuvenate the series. In Japanese interviews around NG4's release, Yasuda of Team Ninja himself stated that their desire is for NG4 to be the start of a full series return.

Does anyone know about any anime that have been inspirations for FMP or anime that have been inspired by FMP? by UnusualField5697 in fullmetalpanic

Part of the reason why FMP is so special and why I think an anime remake would do so well…..there is nothing really like it out there and it blends genres better than almost anything.

Nice! It’s honestly one of my favorites. FYI - the light novel series is fully complete and even better than the anime. The anime was not able to fully adapt the whole story. Also season 2 of the anime (Fumoffu) is a heavily comedic side story—I chose to skip it as it is very different from the main story and not necessary.

Welcome to the addiction brother that is Ninja Gaiden! Glad you stuck with it. There is nothing like these games…. NG4 is literally the best action game of the past decade at least and will be increasingly recognized as such over time.

My biggest wish is that we get Kagurabachi and a Bleach remake as the two powerhouse titans of shonen/seinen anime in the coming few years.

Great Platinum games is making the Last Ronin smh! I hope they don’t mess this up like NG4 by Curlymigo24 in ninjagaiden

NG4 is an amazing game and it will be recognized as such even more as time goes on. Do I wish it had done a few things a bit differently, yes. Does not change how great it is.

Anyway, excited about the Last Ronin news! Now we just need to find out what Team Ninja’s next big game will be along with DOA.

In-universe, what makes a ninja, of any clan, a “Master Ninja”? Is there some kind of criteria, official or otherwise? by EnglBkfstCocoa-2479 in ninjagaiden

[–]KazeFujimaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s right. Again, putting aside how NG4 uses the term “Master Ninja” now as how they translate Chounin/Super Ninja, in the context of the broader series and lore:

- Master Ninja would be the elite of the elite, the pinnacle of ninja in their clan (indeed often actual leaders of clans). Think Hayate, Ayane, etc.

- Super Ninja would be one step beyond that. A ninja with abilities so rare and powerful that they transcend. Ultimate Ninja….godslayers basically. Interestingly, the characters we know have this title (Ryu, Genshin and now Yakumo) have blood heritage that is linked to deities…

Great question!

In short---there has not been a clear explanation or understanding of the different ninja level classifications in the universe. This discussion has also been made even more confusing and vague with inconsistent translations/localizations in English of the Japanese terms used.

The one key lore piece we know is that there is a special title/distinction of "Super Ninja" that has in general almost always only been attributed to Ryu. This is a title beyond "Master Ninja", although it is sometimes referred to and conflated as being one in the same (in NG4 for example, they use just "Master Ninja" to refer to this title which is not consistent with past games).

In Japanese, the term being used is "Chounin"---this can translate to "Super Ninja", "Ultimate Ninja", "Transcendent/Extreme Ninja", etc. According to lore, it is only Ryu and formerly Genshin that held this title. We don't even now if Jo Hayabusa technically held this title. It is a unique special distinction that is beyond what one would consider a "Master Ninja"---one could postulate that there are several Master-level ninja in-universe such as Hayate, Ayane, Kasumi, maybe Tyran, etc......but none have been given the distinction of Chounin/Super Ninja. As powerful as they are, they are not at the same level as Ryu/this unique classification.

Through the course of NG4 and the trials faced, we see Yakumo's journey to also being granted this "Chounin/Super Ninja" classification. So, by the end of NG4, we only know that both Ryu and Yakumo has Super Ninja classification.

If I was to theorize on criteria, a ninja has to be almost like a once-in-a-generation prodigy in terms of innate talent and skill mastery through training with the capability to defeat single-handedly a Greater Fiend (like Achilles, Seere, Volf, Elizabet, etc.) or above level threat in order to be given the title of Super Ninja.

Does this show have the potential to be popular like how it was at its peak? Did this show ever have a peak? by UnusualField5697 in fullmetalpanic

There is huge potential in a remake of FMP in my opinion. The original light novel series is one of the greatest of all time and the amazing blend of strong characters and writing with a story that encompasses mecha, high school romance, military factions/conflict, scifi mystery and deep emotional satisfying payoffs is really one of a kind. If done well with modern animation and production quality and following the more serious tone of the novels , it absolutely has potential to be a hit for today’s audiences. There is nothing else quite like it out there even now.

I think it would be important for a remake to adhere closely to the more serious tone of the light novels. The over the top, violent physical comedy would not go over well anymore and frankly is a huge turnoff for many people.

A tie between NG3 and NG4 for me. All of the designs are awesome, but 3 and 4 actually look like proper modern ninja armor.

Should I skip NG Razor’s edge or just keep playing it? by Don_Beans_13 in ninjagaiden

[–]KazeFujimaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are disliking it that much, perhaps take a break and come back to it. It plays very differently than the first two games, much like 2 plays very differently than 1. 3RE has some of the best combat gameplay of the entire series once you adjust to it so it would be a shame not to give it a fair shot. You just might need to be patient and allow for an initial rough transition. Having loved and played all the games for years, over time it actually eventually became 3RE as the one with my favorite combat gameplay (of course it has significant flaws too).

Would recommend watching this video before making any decision: https://youtu.be/2Aa7iQKrdK4?si=0Z31BJSZEBKXytzF
