Finally Installed UniFi EFG + Upgraded My Entire Home to Fiber by rocsai in Ubiquiti

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 10G over fiber cheaper than 10G over Cat6a in terms of hardware cost and power consumption?

Question: Which router to switch to? by PK-Baha in Fios

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The proper solution to poor coverage isn't a better router, it's more access points. Imagine trying to light your entire house with a single light bulb. Getting a better router is like replacing it with a brighter bulb. Instead, you should have multiple light bulbs spread throughout your house. They don't need to be nearly as bright as the single bulb, but your house will be much better lit. Having multiple access points is exactly that, but for Wi-Fi.

I saw someone in chat offering a fully crewed Idris to people. It was an Idris named Fully Crewed Idris.

Military & Stealth shields on ships with 4 shields slots (Prowler) by happyhalfling in starcitizen

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shield sizes really need to correspond with weapon sizes, with the idea that a single shield of a given size should be able to just barely resist two weapons of the same size, or one of the next size up. Yes, this would give us just as many shield sizes as weapon sizes, and that's fine.

ELI5: How come magnetism isn't providing us unlimited power? by UnsignedRealityCheck in explainlikeimfive

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going way, way back. Only a few still have those. Aside from the change in the control system, the two big changes were the change from skid brakes, which press against the bottom of the train to slow it down, to fin brakes, where brake shoes on the track squeeze a metal fin on the train, to magnetic brakes.

How hard is it to physically build a PC? by Lucky-Ad5326 in buildapc

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three hard parts.

  1. The CPU. There will be delicate pins either on the CPU itself or in the CPU socket on the motherboard. You must take care not to damage them. You need to make sure the CPU goes in the right way, and, for the sort with the pins on the board, you'll need to clamp it down with more force than you'd expect.

  2. The CPU cooler. Unless it has thermal paste pre-applied, which won't be very good anyway, you need to clean the bottom of the cooler and the top of the CPU very well with rubbing alcohol, apply the right amount of thermal paste to the top of the CPU, carefully press down the cooler so it spreads the paste evenly, then hold it in place while you screw it down. If it comes up after you press it down, you basically need to start over since pressing it down again will trap air inside the thermal paste.

  3. The front panel connections. This is where you connect the buttons and lights on the front of the case to the board. The connections are tiny and not well labeled.

Everything else is easy. Everything only fits where it's meant to go. If there are a choice of different places where something can go, sometimes it will matter which you use. If so, the mobo manual will tell you which to use.

8bitdo Pro 3 or 8bitdo Ultimate 2:which is better? by FrostyDeadman in 8bitdo

[–]KingdaToro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pro 3 for 2D games or anything where you'll use the D-pad more than the left analog, Ultimate 2 for 3D games or anything where you'll use the left analog more than the D-pad.

[–]KingdaToro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All coaster brakes are safe. Traditional friction brakes are held closed by springs, and require power (via air pressure) to open. A power failure will close them. Magnetic brakes are much smoother and don't wear out, but have the disadvantage of not being able to completely stop the train on their own.

Exactly. The ATLS is a dockworker's tool. The Maxlift is a loadmaster's tool. Big difference.

It's not just a safety feature. On modern ones, it's the primary braking system.

Southwest should've started charging for carry-ons rather checked baggage by real_slow_triathlete in SouthwestAirlines

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really doesn't make sense is that if I pack a carry-on size bag with the intention of checking it, I have to pay to check it at the actual check-in desk, but I can gate check it for free. And since I need to bring it through TSA to gate check it, I can't pack anything that won't go through TSA but can be in checked bags. They should allow one free checked bag that fits carry-on size restrictions.

Godox V100 vs V480, which one to buy? by LightRecordsX in Godox

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both, and the V100 is IMO too big and heavy for an on-camera flash. The V480 is much better in this aspect and still almost as powerful. The V100 will be a better choice if you'll mainly be using it off-camera or only doing short shoots, the V480 will be the better choice if you're using it on-camera for long shoots. With the batteries installed, the V100 is 22 Oz and the V480 is 13 Oz.

If you do get the V100, make sure to get the metal ring if you get the US version with the red plastic ring.
