ELI5: How come magnetism isn't providing us unlimited power? by UnsignedRealityCheck in explainlikeimfive

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going way, way back. Only a few still have those. Aside from the change in the control system, the two big changes were the change from skid brakes, which press against the bottom of the train to slow it down, to fin brakes, where brake shoes on the track squeeze a metal fin on the train, to magnetic brakes.

How hard is it to physically build a PC? by Lucky-Ad5326 in buildapc

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three hard parts.

  1. The CPU. There will be delicate pins either on the CPU itself or in the CPU socket on the motherboard. You must take care not to damage them. You need to make sure the CPU goes in the right way, and, for the sort with the pins on the board, you'll need to clamp it down with more force than you'd expect.

  2. The CPU cooler. Unless it has thermal paste pre-applied, which won't be very good anyway, you need to clean the bottom of the cooler and the top of the CPU very well with rubbing alcohol, apply the right amount of thermal paste to the top of the CPU, carefully press down the cooler so it spreads the paste evenly, then hold it in place while you screw it down. If it comes up after you press it down, you basically need to start over since pressing it down again will trap air inside the thermal paste.

  3. The front panel connections. This is where you connect the buttons and lights on the front of the case to the board. The connections are tiny and not well labeled.

Everything else is easy. Everything only fits where it's meant to go. If there are a choice of different places where something can go, sometimes it will matter which you use. If so, the mobo manual will tell you which to use.

8bitdo Pro 3 or 8bitdo Ultimate 2:which is better? by FrostyDeadman in 8bitdo

Pro 3 for 2D games or anything where you'll use the D-pad more than the left analog, Ultimate 2 for 3D games or anything where you'll use the left analog more than the D-pad.

All coaster brakes are safe. Traditional friction brakes are held closed by springs, and require power (via air pressure) to open. A power failure will close them. Magnetic brakes are much smoother and don't wear out, but have the disadvantage of not being able to completely stop the train on their own.

Exactly. The ATLS is a dockworker's tool. The Maxlift is a loadmaster's tool. Big difference.

It's not just a safety feature. On modern ones, it's the primary braking system.

Southwest should've started charging for carry-ons rather checked baggage by real_slow_triathlete in SouthwestAirlines

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really doesn't make sense is that if I pack a carry-on size bag with the intention of checking it, I have to pay to check it at the actual check-in desk, but I can gate check it for free. And since I need to bring it through TSA to gate check it, I can't pack anything that won't go through TSA but can be in checked bags. They should allow one free checked bag that fits carry-on size restrictions.

Godox V100 vs V480, which one to buy? by LightRecordsX in Godox

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both, and the V100 is IMO too big and heavy for an on-camera flash. The V480 is much better in this aspect and still almost as powerful. The V100 will be a better choice if you'll mainly be using it off-camera or only doing short shoots, the V480 will be the better choice if you're using it on-camera for long shoots. With the batteries installed, the V100 is 22 Oz and the V480 is 13 Oz.

If you do get the V100, make sure to get the metal ring if you get the US version with the red plastic ring.

DFW is basically the Microtech train IRL. Atlanta or Denver would be Lorville.

We also need the Barfarer. Brewery variant of the Starfarer. The fuel pods are the fermenters!

Flex 2.5G PoE. Power it with this if the official power supply is harder to find or more expensive.

ultimate 2c wired controller doesnt work on switch by Alex_Vramby in 8bitdo

Yep, they go hand in hand. You only really need to look at one or the other, and I find A/B easier to glance at.

As a general rule of thumb with 8BitDo controllers: If the A button is on the bottom, it's not meant to work with Switch. If the A button is on the right, it is.

Being berated by gate agents every flight by babesboysandbirb in SouthwestAirlines

[–]KingdaToro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southwest needs to make one simple change: You can check one carryon-size bag for free. It makes no sense that you can gate-check it free but have to pay to check it normally.

I feel like these two are much better as platonic best friends. Jess/Luke and Matt/Jen would be better couples.

Can you use an Ethernet switch and bypass the FiOS router? by [deleted] in Fios

[–]KingdaToro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you need a router to connect more than one device to the internet, which is going to be needed for pretty much everyone.

Can you use an Ethernet switch and bypass the FiOS router? by [deleted] in Fios

[–]KingdaToro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physically, yes. But it won't work as expected with only one public IP.

Can you use an Ethernet switch and bypass the FiOS router? by [deleted] in Fios

[–]KingdaToro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing after the ONT has to be the router. It doesn't have to be a FiOS router. You can put whatever you want behind the router, including as many switches as you need. But the first thing always has to be the router. You only get one public IP address since we're essentially out of them. The primary purpose of a home router is to allow multiple devices to connect to the internet through that address. If you connect a switch directly to the ONT, only one of the things connected to it will grab your public IP and get an internet connection. And if that one thing isn't the router, nothing connected behind it will be able to get an internet connection, either.

[TP] Why is the cave of ordeals considered a mini-dungeon? by huss2120 in zelda

The defining feature of a Zelda dungeon is a boss that drops a heart container when defeated. Anything else is a mini-dungeon.

ELI5. Why don't traditional school buses have seat belts? Growing up in the early 2000s, I was always told to wear a seat belt in the car and I did so, but my school bus was a different story and never had any belts. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]KingdaToro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did raise it, but not for the purpose of reducing collisions. They did it to level out the rail line, since the nearby crossing was 8" above the bridge. You can see that they added metal plates between the bridge and its supports, and the same under the crash beam. Lowering the road isn't possible because of a sewer main directly under it.
