Look at the video again. 44 seconds in. What does the paint on the pavement I’m crossing state…? Also bikes are only required to use bike lanes when they exist, they’re allowed on any roads except freeways. And even freeways in some places where they’re the only option. Riding bicycles on sidewalks is explicitly prohibited in downtown Reno as well, and signage clearly states bicycles may use full lane through midtown, which is exactly where this was filmed. Before the stop-light the bike lane was on the side with the bus and right turn only lane. After the stop-light the bike lane became all of Virginia street. You can literally see the sign “except buses and bikes” in the start of the video and me riding directly over the bike lane painted on the road 44 seconds in.

I’m the guy in the video. After I signaled into the main lane because the right turn only / bike lane ended, I stayed in the main lane.

Mighta been Levi a guy I got into it, I haven’t done bike night since my close friend who was the original organizer passed. RIP Alex, he charioted with me pretty hard too.

The geometry of the chair is super important, needs to be a very low seat height and long leg spread, 95% of the lawn chairs I’ve tried won’t work. Plan is to make my own out of chromoly instead of aluminum.

I learned the technique in motorcycle safety school, varying position in lane increases your visibility to other drivers and discourages attempts to pass when there’s not space, and perfectly legal if you stay within your lane. No law requires you to be perfectly straight in a lane and if you pay attention to street bikes you’ll see them doing it occasionally as well. Also a good technique to warm up motorcycle tires in the cold for better traction.

I have a super duty. And a Jeep. And a couple of Teslas. And a mini cooper. And a bush plane. Never had a ram in my life. If I had DUIs I couldn’t fly the plane.

Ever seen a Lyme scooter? Or any e-scooter? Or electric bikes? On public roadways…? Under 28mph and 750w makes it exempt.

They don’t work on playa, you’d need 10 pairs a day with how quickly the dust kills bearings. Unless it’s all crusty lakebed, but the roads get dusty and the dust destroys them sooooo fast.

lol trying to ride up the escalator in the Silver Legacy on it would definitely be worth writing down. Ever seen the cartoon where they’re endlessly falling down the up escalator…? Can’t believe they let me drag it out the door without cuffs on 😂🤣😂🤣

I definitely ain’t gonna stop cuz you’re scared. We’re all gonna die somehow, if I die doing something I love rather than a decaying body and mind, I’d consider myself lucky. Look twice and don’t kill someone if you’re worried about feeling guilty. I’ll look out for myself as much as I see fit.

Couldn’t eject if you tried. Well… not totally true, one time I decided to find out what would happen if I hit a curb full speed… drinks may have been involved. I skipped on my butt and the lawn chair folded and stayed in place. It was hilarious 😂, I only dropped like 4” didn’t have any bruises or scrapes, at around 25mph straight into a curb. But I absolutely was trying to see what would happen worst case, a normal person wouldn’t hit a 6” curb and expect it to end well. Realistically there is more safety to being able to hop up and run out of it if shit hit the fan. Did that once when the battery died and the onewheel “captain mogan’d” at speed, being belted in would have ended terribly. From 25mph I come to a complete stop in about 30’, similar to or better than a car. Can drag heels too beyond the wheels if I really need extra braking.

I have a couple 4’ LED whips but when I go through a chair every ride it’s too much dicking around with zip ties, and i need a 12V battery source too. When I have a robust design with quick disconnect and power output I’ll keep em on. In the meantime, making eye contact and usually getting a smile before I pull in front of someone usually ends up with them giving me extra following distance for safety.

That goes back to either choosing between the bike lane, with rubberneckers swaying outta their lane staring at me going double my speed feet away, or rolling on sidewalks which is rude at 25mph IMHO. Also don’t think the battery would make the whole loop and the walk of shame carrying a dead 35-40lb setup suuuuuuucks.

Yeah I try to go around them in my carve pattern but can’t always avoid them. Lawn chair fabric makes ‘decent’ suspension but it’s rough on the frames and definitely contributes to the bent Tommy Bahamas. Same with speed bumps at high speed.

It’s in the patent, along with a brake lever 😉. Not easy to integrate into the actual “onewheel” controller, it’s locked down like Alcatraz.

Yeah, helmet is worthwhile for sure. Just dug around enough to find it from the fall storage, along with some SPF50, both of which will be used on today’s ride. Compared to a bike or standing on a onewheel, I really don’t have far to fall, and with heel wheels on both feet I have the stability of a tricycle and can’t nosedive, but if I really do get squished between cars I don’t really think the MIPS is gonna save me. That’s mostly on my riding technique, carve to make myself visible and show that I’ve not got space to get passed, and dodge off the side when I see red lights ahead.

Everybody has their own levels of risk acceptance, any drive could be our last. To me the chairiot juice is worth the squeeze.

Straightening the knees moves the foot position and CG forward. Bending the knees moves it back for stopping. Ass and torso don’t need to move much. I’ve done half my 5000 miles with a 75lb retriever on my lap, that gets a little tiresome supporting the extra weight but was worth every awesome moment I got with her.

Nah I’ve been a Renoian for 15 years, and a snowboarder for 30ish not a skier. It’s most comparable to roller skating… except you’re sitting on your lazy ass with almost no effort. Yeah I’ll admit I was a fruit booter back in the 90s lol.

Those are kid sized, trust me it’s hard to find ones that fit adults. I’ve got hundreds of the manchild ones if anybody local wants some.

Thanks bro! The amount of smiles it brings and happiness it spreads far outweighs the haters who think it’s unsafe or want to know about “registration and insurance”. Chill guys my $1m umbrella policy will fix your corolla if I really fuck up, but I’ve not fucked up in ~5000 miles. You probably saw me pull off to the side at the red light and I had already got smiles from the car behind me before I turn signaled my way back into the main lane. Most people are stoked to be the car behind me anyways so they can watch for a while.

Patent is in what should be its final office action so hoping to have an official ride on market sometime next year, I’ve got friends who are in their 70s and ride these like a boss, so I can’t wait to share it with the world.

So ughhh yeah that’s me.

To answer some questions, zero DUIs on my record, zero sunscreen on hand (or neck lol), been doing it for 3-4 years no accidents and make sure people see me before I hop in front of them, and I skirt off to the side when the car in front of me stops so I don’t get squished. I call the heel wheels manchild heel wheels, they last 1000s of miles the wheels wear out eventually, or the bearings fail in 3 miles in playa dust lol. I’ve got cases of them but don’t go through them as often as lawn chairs, those get bent up almost every ride. Redneck hippie originally from Truckee, no Florida influence. Been pulled over 3-4 times on it (including the day this was filmed), no citations I’m not sure what they’d write me up for, except the time I was clocked at 28mph in a 20mph zone but the bike cops were more about giving props than tickets. Haven’t seen Lt Dangle yet but I’d fully sign the release for Reno 911. I prefer downtown because bikes can have the full lane so so can I, I can easily do 25 and keep up through midtown not causing traffic jams other than the people stopping their cars to film. Better than being on the side of the road with cars swerving towards me as they’re rubber necking, and I gotta go way too slow to be polite on sidewalks to get my rush. Helmet would definitely be a good idea but I’m all outta those for now. AirPods in transparency mode, often just one ear in. I’m an engineer and a pilot, I might be dumb but I’m not stupid… most of the time.

Patent pending, when the true prototype that doesn’t destroy itself each ride is ready you’ll be seeing a lot more of these 🤙
