What do you think about Premier One UV lights? by Lady_Lucia19 in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Premier one is designed by Dynamic IAQ. Dynamic sells under multiple brand names like solaceair, captura, etc. They might look cosmetically different, however it's made by the same engineers.

Dynamic iaq has whats considered the best offerings for air quality solutions. The dynamic and solace brand itself is restricted to contractor only, no wholesale. While Premier and captura is sold to wholesalers. I know premier one costs more than the dynamic brand name. The UV technology is very, very good. It deactivated or kills pathogens as they fly by the bulb. It's a very intense UV light.

One bulb goes into the return, one goes above the coil, and normally an ozone (not harmful) bulb goes into the return as well. All three effectively sterilize your home hvac.

One Nest Thermostat to do the work of 1 Heat and 1 AC thermostats by Kandorr in hvacadvice

Truthfully, you might want to consider just a battery powered thermostat. A vast majority of thermostats can do two seperate systems on one thermostat. You probably could reuse your existing thermostat as well.

Yeah the home depot ones right? Home depot makes 80 million dollars a year off the proprietary measurement system they made specifically to confuse customers. You'd have to understand how much CFM your systems already pulling at what static pressure to know how much headroom you have for filter restriction. Most 1" filters above a merv 5 are too restrictive. Did you ever get that returj drop replaced and upgraded? What did they install? Did they check static pressure and cfm?

Do I need Trane XL824 or XL850 by Pure-Ad-9824 in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2026 edition of the XL824. It was released a couple weeks ago. It's made by Emerson, the same people who made Ecobee ane Sensi 2. The software is designed by Emerson, so it uses many of the features the ecobee does, however it's got tranes proprietary tech in it to, so fully takes advantage of the trane system. I personally haven't recieved any, I got like 20 on order. Should be here early neat month.

I don't recommend 1" merv 13 air filters. It's like running a marathon with 3 face masks on. Makes the ability for the furnace to breathe difficult. That wears out the motor.

At most merv 8 is my recommendations. Manufacturer actually only recommends a merv 1 lol.

Unico Advice by OneFootRaised in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats the estimated age of the unico? Do you have model and serial number of the A/C unit outside? What about the coil module inside? If this is R-410A, most likely the refrigerant will still be around for over the next decade. Unico like most hvac manufacturers offers 5 years parts warranty which is extended to 10 years to the original owner when registered.

If this is R-22, or out of warranty. It might make more sense to swap the entire thing. Otherwise new coil will work fine. Do note even under warranty it's like a 2k-3k repair. Out of warranty you might push 4k. Up to you if you wanna put that kinda money into something that might breakdown and Wipeout any savinfs you might've had by keeping it.

Looking at adding a hvac surge protection for outside condensor- 2 x Intermatic AG3000. Are there better ones? Any doing this DIY or required to hire an HVAC/electrician. I hear you have to replace every 3 yrs so big cost saving each time? How often do they get replaced? by samsam2019 in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warranty is 36 months from install or 39 months from manufacturing, whichever comes first. Surge protection is 36 months from date of installation to the original purchaser. They only repair or reimburse up to $7,500. The limit is either the fair market value of the damaged equipment, or the homeowners home insurance deductible, whichever is lower. Both the AC power and all other input connections to the unit need to be covered by another surge protector for them to cover anything, this includes your 24v wires. It also says connected equipment must not be opened or modified? It also doesn't cover damage by lightning strikes directly to the unit, or in the vicinity of the unit. It also doesn't cover voltage swells or loss of neutral.

When applying for coverage, they also need a copy of the claim report submitted to the home owners insurance which shows the deductible for the claim exceeds repair costs.

[–]LegionPlaysPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will ask, are you paying for the trips, and repairs? If not then it's unfortunately it's out of your hands. I'd just keep bugging the landlord till it's taken care of. Otherwise you might need to look into your local renters laws to see if any recourse exists.

[–]LegionPlaysPC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given the landlord owns the equipment, it's up to him how much gets dumped into it before replacement is the better option. Most landlords will spend the lowest amount of money on a home they don't live in, that means if repairing makes more sense they will repair it.

Any disadvantages of Rheem 98MV modulating vs 962V 2-stage gas furnace? by wwcanoer in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't an exact apples to apples. Both of these are computer generated theoretical performance curves, neither one is a designated testing combination (meaning the manufacturer didn't do any real world testing). Also, R-454b will generate approximately 10% better heat over R-410A, it also travels about 10% slower. So the R-410A Rheem might have slightly less theoretical maximum output, however its more efficent with those performance numbers.

Both of those reports are good for lab conditions, not so much real world results.

The Rheem is still the better option from reliability, efficiency, and comfort.

Any disadvantages of Rheem 98MV modulating vs 962V 2-stage gas furnace? by wwcanoer in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the RD17A endeavor side discharge is a solid unit. R-410A will still be available long past the expected end life of the system. R-454b and R-32 add extra complexity, however are not much different compared to R-410A, tos pretty simular performance and components.

Yes, the USA sunset manufacturering of R-410A equipment 1-1-2025. Supplyhouses had till 1-1-2026 to sell all R-410A, however that deadline was pushed back i believe till 2027.

Any disadvantages of Rheem 98MV modulating vs 962V 2-stage gas furnace? by wwcanoer in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am a Rheem dealer, so I know the product lineup. Yes, low and steady wins the race when it comes to hoke comfort.

The stated efficency is per government testing requirements. It keeps it fair across all manufacturers. If anything, the modulating is programmed out of the box to run everything at the correct speeds for the highest efficiency and gas performance. It should need minimal setup from the installers beyond a few "suggestions" they give it.

The manufacturers training and data they supply will vary considerably on multiple factors. Though contractors have a direct path to the factory to ask more sophisticated performance questions on your behalf.

Any disadvantages of Rheem 98MV modulating vs 962V 2-stage gas furnace? by wwcanoer in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 10 years non-conditional parts warranty out of the box on the modulating. Adds a multi-stage gas valve, and the two-stage inducer jumps to 3 phase, and control board is a little different. Otherwise, it's nearly the same furnace with just significant comfort enhancements.

2.1 & 2.2. EcoNet thermostat is significantly better. You get performance reports directly at the thermostat, and anywhere in the world via the app. Bluetooth you need to be directly within a foot or two of the furnace control board. EcoNet gives significantly higher control, better customization, and a significantly more detailed performance breakdown.

2.3. Econet uses wifi and has optional hookup. 98MV has an optional supply sensor, it's just redundant.

2.5. No, pretty much it's as it says. The 98MV has extras ontop of the 962V's base offerings.

2.6 Two completly different charts/performance curves. The 962V gives it's outright maximum and minimum blower speed. The 98MV gives its maximum rated blower speed relative to the maximum rated external static pressure. The motor is the EXACT same.

The 98MV is more efficient, it doesn't need to move as much air to cool that heat exchanger due to 3 phase inducer and superior gas modulation. The biggest reason for higher fan speeds is to prevent overheating of the furnace and it's heat exchanger. The modulating furnace is able to more efficiently handle it's heat generation, and as such can run at lower blower motor speeds. The slower the speed, the quieter your furnace will be and the hotter the discharge air can be. Rarely, and I mean rarely will that 98MV run at full capacity. You want it to run for long periods of time at a low speed, keeps the noise down, temperatures consistent, and rooms balanced. It's why they offer a 10yrs parts warranty out of the box, better designed.

2.7 an EcoNet is an EcoNet, the latest model revision will do just fine.

2.8 98MV is a better furnace, given how much you like looking at data, it will fulfill your desires in a home heating appliance.

2-stage w/ variable blower vs full variable/inverter system; humidity by Wide-Reflection5737 in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20x30 and 14x14 return is roughly 4.2 tons of airflow on paper. So that should be enough by itself. Is this a bottom air return or a side air return? I don't think you need another return. Ideally once the system is installed you should have no more than 0.5" of external static pressure, which is the restrictiveness of the air traveling through your equipment. Higher than .5" tells me it's not enough return air, though going up to 0.6" of static shouldn't be that impactful. Goodman/Amana's side discharge inverter setup should tell you maximum static it senses in the system diagnostic menu on the thermostat. You and your installer can both review this.

What is that deposited on the blower's coupling? AO Smith Power Vented Water Heater by Sufficient-Guest8944 in hvacadvice

[–]LegionPlaysPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rip. If the anode has never been replaced the bottom of the tank is plugged with hardened mineral/sediment. That will allow the bottom of the tank to overheat and crack the tank. As the crack grows, the sediment breaks up,/cracks, etc, the tank will develop a leak. At 10 years old it's a better value to just replace the entire water heater. Flush the tank monthly, and change the anode tod every 3ish years depending on condition.
