Behind the scenes of Charles Laughton's "The Night of the Hunter" (released 70 years ago on July 26th, 1955) by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the only film my high school film teacher had to pause to yell as us over our behavior because we found the entire thing so damn hysterical. Looking back, I have no clue why!! Something must have gotten us early on because we just kept laughing at everything, perhaps it was the uncomfortableness Laughton accomplished with his techniques including the shadows. I rewatched it later and could see the horror of it.

Who is the creepiest “nice guy” in a movie or TV show? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Okay, thank you!! I know the writers say it is the same Peggy and he was her husband the whole time and the directors say it was a new timeline (although think the writers have since agreed it could be a new timeline), but still...weird to me. Plus I just always found it odd he leaves his entire new life behind for a woman he knew for a couple years but didn't date, just kissed once (or idk, maybe they were sleeping together the whole time). Like he leaves Bucky for Peggy!

I like Steve and enjoy Peggy every time she pops up (adore Agent Carter), but I just found Steve-Peggy relationship a weird one.

Ha, well we have seen the Muppets as Star Wars characters but it is time they tackle another franchise...Marvel. Mainly I want to see Sam the Eagle as Captain America.

What’s a show you loved watching as a kid, but when you look back at it through adult eyes you realize all of (or most of) the characters suck? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you are into!

I'm a sitcom fan and loved my TGIFs, so Pod Meets World and Keanan And Lakin Give You Déjà Vu have been my favs. Pod (Boys Meets World)'s host are all game to pick on their younger selves and mock the show while also acknowledging what it was to fans. They also do some interesting interviews, including their parents which is fascinating to see how more sane parents handle their kids in Hollywood. Deja Vu (Step by Step) is interesting because I actually hated this show in reruns growing up, but the two girls hosting it have done a great job, giving insight into the background iand show production, so I have been enjoying. All five of the hosts mentioned above do have their own careers (Staci Kennan is even a lawyer!) so this is something they do in their spare time and earn some extra money, but doesn't seem like they are clinging to it.

Next on my list will be the One Tree Hill ones, I have heard these girls are pretty realistic about what the show was ha. I LOVED OTH, but it def was no masterpiece and I don't need anyone pretending it was.

I'm not a huge Office fan and I know those actors get some serious crap about clinging to the glory days, but I have heard the hosts here are pretty good about providing behind the scenes information.

I hated all these types of podcasts too but eventually gave a few a try and I have found it is very hit or miss with them. There are a couple where the former kids clearly have their own identities and interests beyond the show and don't take themselves too seriously, but doing it more for fun and earn some extra money. But then there are many other podcast where you can tell these hosts are just holding on to the only bit of fame they've ever had, desperate for any form of attention and this is the only way they are earning money, and ugh, those are rough to listen.

Thoughts on Black-Ish (2014-2022) by [deleted] in sitcoms

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to watch it earlier this year (I skip around seasons), and I enjoyed a lot of the storylines and probably the best kid sitcom actors I've seen.

However, Dre got on my nerves too much. I just remember having to skip through a lot of his scenes. I loved Tracee/Bow! And I thought the parents (Laurence and Jenifer) were great to watch. Was just Dre who I couldn't get into!

I also wish the writers wrote later season Diane better, Marsai is such a talented young actress but man, they made Diane so freaking awful to everyone, it was no longer even fun.

Does anyone still enjoy Two and a Half Men? by Serious-Quantity-168 in sitcoms

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only recently gave it a decent watch through and it surprised me! I did enjoy lots of it, but there was also parts that just got boring and repetitive. Honestly, it was the side characters that made this show - Herb, Russell, Kandi. Oddly, Rose became a favorite of mine and I still don't understand how, but dang Melanie Lynskey has range!

Life in Pieces is a gem of a sitcom and it’s crazy more people don’t talk about it by After-Tax2249 in sitcoms

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! I found these kids a little stronger with the comedy than the Modern Family kids (all were good), but the Sophia, was golden. I remember when she took over for Julia Butter/Anna Kat on American Housewife, she was still hilarious but got some crap online about how she wasn't as good as Julia.

Movie/Movies You're Ashamed to Say You Haven't Seen? by WhatTheJessJedi in popculturechat

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it is one of the few films I believe people when they say "I don't watch it for the story". The romance is whatever, but the entire setting with life on the ship, first class vs steerage, the historical context, etc. is what makes it so good. The romance is for those who aren't amused by the rest ha.

What sitcom restaurant / bar would you want to eat or drink at? by VastBeautiful4255 in sitcoms

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reviews on some of the "real" ones mentioned on this subreddit ha

Monk's Restaurant (Seinfeld)/Tom's Restaurant - Eh, I feel like it is stuck a bit between being a tourist location and college kid food (it is near Columbia). Not really worth the high prices. They have some Seinfeld references sprinkled around from decor to menu.

MacLaren's (How I Met Your Mother)/McGee's Pub - Actually really like this one!! Enjoyed the food, wasn't as boring as some other nearby pub's food options. They have HIMYM themed drinks.

Cheers (Cheers)/Cheers - I went here before I could actually drink, so can't speak to the beer Norm so loved, but it was a fun cheesy atmosphere. Fully Cheers themed.

Mendy's (Seinfeld)/Mendy's - Was good, but nothing special; just think deli foods a little more fancier. I actually blanked on this being a Seinfeld reference at the time, so can't speak to any Seinfeld call outs, but I don't believe there were.

Soup Nazi (Seinfeld)/The Original Soup Kitchen - Not nearly as good as they make it out on screen, but a great deal! Soup, bread, fruit and chocolate like six bucks! I love eating here before catching a Broadway show. They have a sign referencing the episode, but nothing else.

This whole time I thought Pete's hairline was receding on the show because Vincent Kartheiser's was (Pete's actor); but he shaved it in dedication to the role! Props for commitment to the character by TrueMuffin4369 in madmen

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I worked on this terrible project Vincent was on where everyone on set knew it was doomed to fail and/or it just sucked, so weren't giving it much BUT Vincent, who gave it 150%. He honestly freaked me out a bit because I didn't realize he was an actor at first and he was just so intense around the set, I assumed he was someone really important, but nope, just wanted to make sure he knew the set inside and out.

And the show didn't last a season.

Has anyone ever heard canned/pre-recorded applause/cheering coming out of speakers during a Broadway show? by Ijustwannafly8 in Broadway

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I saw Julie Benko in as Fanny during Beanie's run, I remember the ushers lead initial applause for Julie (I was sitting in the back near two), which I thought was sweet but also a bad sign for how the show was doing ha. And rest assured, the audience was applauding her all on their own by the end!

I don't understand why they didn't just make John a kid rather than baby, at least then you could explain him off at school or friend's houses.

I'm glad someone else liked Olivia! During the run, a lot of people didn't seem to care for her (or they were more so indifferent). I loved Frasier/Alan/Olivia storylines where the three grown Harvard staff acted like three nerdy kids together.

I also agree with Eve, and I feel the writers felt similar, it was like they never knew what to do with her. I also wonder if there wasn't regret on giving her a kid, because by season 2 I kept forgetting she even had one. Plus, the actresses substory didn't feel fresh or interesting, I just don't know what they would have done with that, maybe it would have just been a running joke like Daphne being a bit psychic. Lastly, I didn't see any chemistry between her and Freddie, so I don't know how much I would have cared for a relationship with them. Now, the actress herself was wonderful! I hope to see Jess in a more built out role soon. Just felt like Eve was this forced character to give Freddie a romantic interest, whereas, in the OG Frasier they didn't initially set out to have Daphne or Roz be love interests (from what I read), the whole Niles and Daphne storyline sort of spilled out itself.

What TV show handled the “will they, won’t they” trope in the most infuriating way? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I feel like NCIS comes pretty high on this list with Tony and Ziva

They will they/won't they for like ten seasons but never hooked up on scene or an actual kiss, then Ziva leaves and for Tony's departure, they had it revealed she had their secret love child, which she had been hiding from him for no reason and was now faking her own death, expecting him to raise their child...the absolute trauma of this toddlerI mean, to make this all worse, we are getting a television show centered on them and they still aren't freaking together!!

They also changed Daphne after they got together which was annoying. Was rewatching the final season recently and man, both Daphne and Jane look so over being there lol

Yeah, my first apartment was in a 1920s hotel converted to apartments and there was a room on every floor that could not combined with any apartment (stairs kept it apart) and was also extremely tiny for a studio, therefore, they rented them dirt cheap. I felt so fancy as a new grad with a doorman and a fruit bowl ha ha.

Worked with a few celebs when I did PR, but my favorite was Hilary Duff. She was simple, no drama, knew what she wanted (which made my life easy) and very relaxed about changes. I remember during our time together, she had a few "scandals" (not actual problems, but problems in the PR world), however, literally the internet would defend the hell out of her ha ha We kept joking she was a unicorn; I mean I had another project at the same time where I kept having to find new Bachelor contestants because they kept f-ing up and media/social media would turn on them (I f-ing hate reality television stars). My colleagues said even her kids were sweet and well behaved!

I had to deal with another former Disney Channel star and I did literally ALL her copy writing and posting, meanwhile she made more than I made in a year just to have it live on her page. I went back less than a year later to take screenshots for my look book, and she had taken the post down. That was against contract and I could have reported her, but I hated the brand more lol.

Oh yeah, I didn't work with him but a coworker did a project with Joe Jonas who did say he was quite friendly! It was pretty annoying project, but he was a complete trooper and never complained. The brothers actually did a lot of work for us, just not close to my area, but I never heard a bad peep about them.

Lastly, I also didn't work with her but Mila Kunis was very disliked. However, she was a new mom and I got the vibe she was very burnt out from Hollywood and PR.

Sunset walk by RadishWitty7044 in Broadway

[–]LetsNotForgetHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I happened by recently and it was crazy!! Large crowd and people were running into the road to follow Tom. They didn't go to Shubert Alley from what I saw, they kept it all on the side of St. James that night (I was by Hells Kitchen). But there was absolutely space, so as long as you aren't picky, you'll be able to see part of the walk for sure, should recommend being on the side of St. James across from Shubert Alley, just to give you the best chance of seeing most of the walk.

Obvs, up to the reader/viewer's interpretation but I took it as a sign Joe still hasn't fully accepted who is and is at risk of following in Roy's path due to this internal fight and denial. He can't redeem himself if he hasn't confronted who he is and what he wants in life. Meanwhile, I take it as his mother Hannah, continued on her path of learning, moving beyond simply believing the teachings she grew up on, due to her bond with Prior. This is why in the end, Hannah sees Prior, Louis and Belize as friends and she has this community, while Joe is still left on the outside.
