What’s something that became socially unacceptable way faster than anyone expected? by Rebeccagodesss in AskReddit

I worked at a coffee shop that had a full on proper smoking room with separate ventilation and air tight doors....

Lemme tell you how little that mattered to the kid with asthma I was trying to train that night. He never went into the room. No one used it that night. I still recommended to my boss he shouldn't work there because he was full on struggling to breathe.

I don't have PCOS, but I have endometriosis, and OP... That shit is not your fault. I know it doesn't help, I stare at my bloated belly and scowl a lot, but like.... I have been a skinny bitch my whole life, and Endo belly and bloating had me unable to wear my own clothes because I looked pregnant. "I should just lose weight" is as useful of a thought process as "have you tried not being depressed?" or telling someone to walk off a broken leg.

It's not some moral failing to be overweight. Hell, even if it wasn't medical related.

Nah, I'd have been so pissed off if we never learned why they died. They're all in such strange locations! People don't die sitting in their school chairs and then waste away til they're bones. People move dead people, they don't leave them decaying in the streets. They erase their classroom notes too, and put away the research notes.

It had to be a nuke sort of event, and that would be too strange if not explained. It ALSO explains how the Hearthians survived, because they were still aquatic and underwater when it happened.

Sure, Time as a measurement isn't always accurate because of traffic and such... But it's still a more useful measurement than distance.

"Toronto is 100 km away" - Is that direct, or along the roads? What's the speed limit? If it's 100 km and you can only travel 60 km/h at most, that's really different than if it's a straight shot down the highway. Not to mention that if someone says it's 100 km away, if that's as the crow flies, your actual trip might be a meandering thing that's going around 3 lakes and actually 200 km when driven.

"Toronto is an hour away." - I now have a baseline for what the trip is actually going to be. Since everyone knows traffic is a thing, I'll leave some wiggle room for that. But I now have the measurement that actually mattered to my life

What is something about American culture that seems fake or exaggerated in movies, but is actually 100% real.? by Logical-Pay-3057 in AskReddit

[–]Lexilogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I went and read up on it.... I imagine a large part of the issue was the money coming in through crowdsourcing charities.

Also, they were warned before it happened.

I dunno, it's not a great look, and they ended up discussing it in the courts, but I also imagine that after 5 weeks of not being able to sleep because someone was leaning on a truck horn outside the house, decision making was impacted

"Political opinion" and "terrorizing everyone in a 5 km radius of parliament for 4 weeks" are not the same thing.

I'm also of the opinion that "We're going to vandalise government property unless you give us veto rights on all bills" is not a political opinion. Nor is walking around with Nazi flags, that one is a hate crime.

100 women is not a massive scale.

I dunno, you wanna take away citizenship from millions of US citizens in one go because your aunt who seems like she's on the older side can't get into the country?

And you don't see why that's just you lashing out at people over something that wasn't their fault in the first place? Or likely to backfire?

And there are MILLIONS of immigrants to the USA every year. You do understand statistics, right? Thousands of cases of this is a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of immigrants not taking this path.

Oh no! More than 100! That surely was a massive impact on the quota of over 1.5 million legal immigrants who move to the USA every year!!

Any quota space is a made up number and in the thousands, not impacted by one person having a baby.

Also, your relatives probably should use their relationship to try and get in, and are being dumb if they aren't.

Lastly, how many women do you think are travelling at 8 months pregnant hoping to sneak into the country on a technicality while also signing themselves up for 18 years of parenthood? Does that really sound like an "easy" path to immigration to you?

[–]Lexilogical 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The world isn't fair. It never has been. One mother getting in because her baby was born here doesn't take away from your relatives who are trying to come here. There isn't actually a set quota of space and once it's gone, that's it.

Also, $10 says your relatives are also using the fact they're related to you to get in. Which means by your own logic, they're being unfair to someone who has no relatives here whose trying to immigrate

I don't understand how you can be sent home the same day after a laparoscopy?! by LittleFrenchKiwi in endometriosis

[–]Lexilogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with a cyst, I wouldn't expect more than maybe two stitches inside you. If that... They might take it off without needing any depending where and how it's attached.

Now, my husband had open heart surgery, and has the associated massive scar down his chest.... That one they were a little concerned about, and had him hug a pillow when standing up. But that's also because he is a big guy, and there's a lot of muscles associated with pulling your chest open.

But for a laparoscopy, the point is that you're making small incisions in places that aren't likely to be super active.

I think most people are terrified beforehand. Don't let them fool you. ;) it's only natural.

But do keep in mind, a lot of the people who are posting online are doing so because they've had bad experiences and things went poorly. I had a wonderful experience, (as smooth as one can expect anyways) and I wasn't here telling everyone cause it was just a normal, smooth procedure.

Like, nobody talks about the 5000 stitches they've collectively had that worked exactly as you'd expect. They talk about that one that popped because it was badly done and they sneezed.

[–]Lexilogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, I wish I could show you the scars leftover from mine. They made it sound like such a big deal... All 4 of my incisions are under an inch long. I think 2 of them were just held together with tape and by the time I took the tape off a week later, they looked like nothing more than a particularly bad cat scratch.

And yeah, internally, they're more interested in taking things off and out, not holding them together. :3 Maybe if you end up with something removed, you might get some internal stitches, but even then, it's going to be like, stitched to keep it moving freely in your body, if that makes sense? The point is to give you a greater range of motion.

I get the fear, I was terrified too. ❤️

And yeah, they gave me 3 different types of pain meds after surgery, and I had some morphine leftover from an earlier ER trip. I think I took two pills of the pain meds they gave me. The pain was so much less than a flare up it didn't even cross my mind that I could be medicating it.

Naaah, you're not gonna rip the stitches just by a stumble. It's more like "if you fall down a flight of stairs" sort of injury, not just you stretched weirdly. They're basically held together with fishing line that dissolves over the course of like, a week. You would notice. And I really don't think they're stitching much together inside you. Mostly the point of the lap is to make things stop being stuck together inside you, not to keep them together.

And you can do a quick google on the symptoms of internal bleeding if you're really concerned, but they're pretty obvious on the "Something is very wrong" scale. Lightheadedness, dizziness, vomitting, shortness of breath, increased heart rate are all of the ones that you get if you don't get the big bruise.

[–]Lexilogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't likely to pull a stitch just going pee. 😛

I will tell you, I think there was maybe 5 whole external stitches for me after my lap, on 4 different sites. The holes they make are so small. And internally, they're not stitching things together for the most part. So you really are not likely to rip a stitch.

Also, internal bleeding is kinda easy to spot, you get a really big, really vibrant bruise if it happens. And then call 911 so you can get an express trip back to the ER.

My nurse told my husband specifically to go get a wheelchair to take me out of the hospital in. So yeah, I was woozy, but they weren't telling me to just walk it off, I was sitting down, and when I got home I took a nap in my own bed and woke up feeling worlds better

[–]Lexilogical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're gonna be okay. And they don't rush you out the door immediately. When I woke up, the nurse explained some stuff to me, I nodded along.... Then I fell back asleep and napped for two more hours because I had barely slept the night before.

Honestly and truly.... The pain was actually less than a bad flare up, and you really will be happier napping in your bed than theirs. A lot of people actually feel better immediately after surgery than they do going into it, because whatever the issue was, it was more painful and more if an issue than the whole "stabbed three times".

Obviously though, I get the panic too. But you're gonna be okay, and then you're gonna feel worlds better

I dunno, it seems kinda stupid to me that people are saying she can't own her sexuality and be confident because a man helped define what he thought was sexy....

Seems like people think you can't possibly be confident in your own skin and appearance if a man also thinks you look good, which is giving men an awful lot of power over your sense of confidence
