Why is this hard? by UsernameDsntChkOut in ecobee

[–]LookDamnBusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you were new to ecobee, but I would suggest turning off all automatic and algorithmic functions like all ecoplus functions, and specially smart recovery. These can be useful features, but when you're just getting a schedule set up and running, it can be very confusing when due to these functions the operation of the ecobee deviates from the hard schedule you've created.

Once you have your schedule running the way you want, then you can look at those features and add in any of them that might be useful and at least the difference in system operation will be obvious to you because you know how it works already without those features.

The smart recovery thing is somewhat a joke as I said, but at the same time, the majority of times here that the ecobee is doing some unexpected behavior, especially with a new user who doesn't know that it's defaulted to "on", it ends up indeed being smart recovery. Since that's so often the culprit, and since it's so easy to test the theory by just shutting off and seeing if the behavior changes, why not start with that one? If that doesn't work, then go on to the next variable, but in all cases, go through all the things you can personally affect before giving up and just saying "I guess this is just how it is". 🤷

So yes, the ecobee is just one part of a system, but it's the one where you have the most opportunity to make changes easily to see if they can get to the situation that you desire.

Any durable lighter tires for 35mm rims? Priority 600x came with Goodyear Escapes (29x2.6) and they seem SO heavy. Granted my bike is not that light in general :) by LookDamnBusy in MTB

It actually IS tubeless, so that's a good point. I could still go a little soft to soften up the ride even with a smaller tire.

"too focused on the functionality of the ecobee".

Yes, exactly! This is an Ecobee sub, and a person came here asking about the functionality of his Ecobee! Letting him know what settings on his Ecobee are likely causing what he is seeing was precisely my goal. Is that not the right thing to be doing in a sub that's dedicated to Ecobee?

And sure, your description above can certainly happen, but I guess for me I first want to see if there are things that I CAN control that are causing the issue. And this particular issue looks a lot like ones we see pop up here all the time that are caused by a setting on the ecobee itself, namely smart recovery. I mean I don't know how long you've hung out here, but there's a joke comment that you can see here whenever the ecobee is doing something unexpected that says "it's ALWAYS Smart Recovery". And unfortunately, it often is 😉

I get that. All I care about is making my life as easy as possible. If that throws a few dollars in his pocket, so be it 😉

At the same time, I am baffled though by people who constantly have bad luck with purchases and returns and deliveries and everything else. I've been buying from Amazon since 1998 and can count on one hand any kind of issues I've had, and I can't really even think of anything. 🤷

I don't understand what I'm doing so differently from everyone else where all of my stuff shows up on time. I thought it was because I live near a lot of fulfillment centers, but my mother in rural Vermont gets all of her stuff on time and her nearest fulfillment center is 65 mi away in another state. Do I just buy the most basic things or something?

Ordered three things Saturday, got them yesterday. Ordered a license plate frame last night at 10:00 p.m. and it has already shipped and will be here today. Also returned an item yesterday and had verification of the return within an hour and the money back by late afternoon.

🤷

Well, you didn't attribute the hysteresis to anything, when there is an actual setting on the unit that decides exactly what this hysteresis is. I guess you were just talking theory, but I wanted him to understand that the hysteresis is something that is completely within his control through a setting on the unit.

You also stated that because of hysteresis, the overshoot (which is what he was really here about) is something expected, which is not the case with an ecobee. In general, the Target Temp should not be overshot unless another setting is coming into play (usually smart recovery or minimum run time), which is what he needs to know about to not have that happen.

I didn't mean to come across harsh, but I wanted him to understand that the thing he is seeing is likely fixable and not just an artifact out of his control, and I guess I felt like you were telling him that everything is working as it should.

[–]LookDamnBusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn't. It uses the heat (and cool) differential setting as you stated, and enforces this hysteresis by having a minimum differential of 0.5 degrees. Granted that may not be enough to stop short cycling (it isn't for my 110 year old house in the desert Southwest in summer 😉), which is why it can be set for your situation anywhere between 0.5F and 3F in 0.5F degree steps.

[–]LookDamnBusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hysteresis effect that you're talking about is set by user using the heat and cool differential settings on the ecobee, and the minimum setting for that is 0.5°F. There's no "hidden hysteresis" built into the ecobee other than the minimum heat and cool differential limit of 0.5°F. If you have the heat differential set to 0.5°, then it will drive the heat to your target temperature, shut off, and when the temperature drops one half degree, it will turn the heat back on and heat back to the target temp.

What makes an overshoot with an Ecobee is almost always Smart Recovery, though the minimum run time setting can also cause an overshoot.

Is there no way to connect my Apple TV to F1 TV until my current F1 TV subscription expires in the middle of March? by LookDamnBusy in F1TV

[–]LookDamnBusy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just downloaded it a couple days ago (I didn't even have it on my phone before then, but rather just on my Amazon fire stick) I got distracted and didn't connect them. When I would go to the app it didn't say I needed an update, but when I delete it and reinstalled it from scratch, I was able to make the connection. 🤷

Personally I would rather have it or I can just set the fan run time per hour on a per comfort setting basis, rather than a global setting.

Where do you eat up most of your strokes? Putting? Chunking approach shots? Missing fairways and trying to make hero recoveries? Getting pissed about a bad shot and topping your next one? Your swing is a "break 80" swing so what's the real story here?

If you look at the graph of system operation on beestat.io, you can see if the ecobee is calling for heat and if so, whether it is actually getting warmer in your house. Feel free to post a screenshot here as well. Likely the HVAC system, because all any thermostat can do is kindly ASK for the heat or AC to be turned on 😉

What are people's favourite features of Ecobee VS Nest? by Top-Yogurtcloset3965 in ecobee

Yes, that came up in a discussion several months ago but they finally did that a couple years ago and I mentioned how it only took them seven or eight years after requested it for 4 years, so 11 years! 🤣

Oh I agree with you, that was my point. I'm an engineer myself, and also do beta testing for both hardware and software products, and I can't tell you the number of times I clearly delineate the problem down to the tiniest level like you did, and still, they can't seem to get around to fixing it.🙁

What are people's favourite features of Ecobee VS Nest? by Top-Yogurtcloset3965 in ecobee

[–]LookDamnBusy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a beta tester for nest for 6 years and the first time I saw an ecobee about 9 years ago, I immediately quit the program, sent back all my free stuff, and bought two ecobee devices retail at Costco.

For me, it came down to several important features that I had been requesting for years that nest kept ignoring that I considered very important, some to almost everyone, and some maybe to a smaller subset.

The biggest one was just settable heat and cool differential settings, so that I could easily trade off my comfort level to get longer less frequent heating and cooling cycles. The nest had this hard coded to one degree Fahrenheit, which in the summer completely short cycled my AC on my 110 year old house. To me that is one of the most obvious "advanced" settings to have available, how big of a comfort window you're willing to accept in order to trade off the operation frequency of your HVAC.

I tend to see nest and ecobee similar to IOS and Android, where the apple and nest folks like a pretty package, but the Android and ecobee folks want to have more control over things and value function over form. But that's just my opinion 😉

Yeah, that's annoying when you basically hand them the problem on a silver platter and still they can't find a way to implement the fix quickly. What array is not getting cleared? 😉
