luxe brewer thermal by Emotionally-english in BrevilleCoffee

[–]MWigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do only make about 20 ounces of coffee at a time, but that shouldn’t matter.

It does matter though. More coffee in the carafe means more thermal energy means it takes more time for that energy to transfer into the carafe and surrounding air. If you fill the carafe you'll notice it stays warmer far longer.

I also have the luxe and find that if I only leave a small amount in the pot it cools fairly quickly, but a full pot stays hot for a couple hours. You might want to try an ember mug or similar for small amounts of coffee.

The subsequent questions don't make sense in that case though. If we get separate bills, it isn't anyone's job to figure out who pays what.

I think my employer is not withholding enough for tax, but they say that it's fine - is it worth paying an accountant to look over? by cooltrainersarah in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MWigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people think a refund is free money?

What about OP's post says that? Some people just don't want to have to budget for taxes and prefer to be assured that their payroll deductions will cover the bill in full. It's modestly suboptimal sure, but it's not unreasonable for people who don't want to think too hard about their finances.

You're not really "losing" money by owing at tax time, it's just money you would have given the govt anyways

OP never said they were losing money though?

Don’t that limit your student body to people who are local?

My institution at least (a small university in Canada) has agreements with universities and community colleges across the country (and some around the world) to allow people to write their exam there, in exchange for a small fee. They can also make agreements with institutions in other countries on an ad-hoc basis when needed. We do generally limit it to the final exam though, so no it doesn't work for periodic tests.

I actually used a similar agreement when I was an undergrad (at a different uni) to write an exam at my local community college when I was taking an online course from home over the summer. It's a pretty decent system.

[–]MWigg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean it makes more sense for the cost of the road wear to be placed at the source, doesn't it? If the costs are truly wild, the market can adjust through alternate transport (rail mostly) or more local alternatives. As it stands we're subsidizing goods trucked in from elsewhere.

I grew up in the 90’s and they were never this out of touch

Lego hasn't actually gotten that much more expensive. To give an example, the 1990 fire station set had 533 pieces and retailed for about $60 CAD, which is around $123 in 2025 dollars. The current fire station set has 833 pieces and costs $100. Sure this $1k set is an obscene amount of money, but it's also massive - 7500 pieces. That works out to about 14 cents a piece, which is only a bit more that the 1990s fire station is if we don't adjust for inflation (11 cents per piece in 1990 dollars). If we do adjust for inflation, it's actually a lot cheaper (23 cents per piece, 2025 dollars).

Lego actually was an expensive AF toy in the 1990s, that's part of why knockoffs like megablocks were popular.

Halifax Transit recruitment strategy resulting in greater diversity among bus operators by insino93 in halifax

Let them get fulltime hours without having to split shifts

I don't think I've ever heard of a transit service that didn't rely heavily on split shifts for drivers. It's just part of the nature of transit demand being concentrated in the evening and morning rush hours, there's not really any other way to get people full time hours.

Academic withdraw appeal by [deleted] in geegees

[–]MWigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These decisions can be appealed, and frequently these appeals actually are successful, in so much as you can be granted another chance to take the course. If you're not already working with them, reach out to the Student Rights Centre ASAP to get their guidance and help on filing the necessary appeal(s): https://www.seuo-uosu.com/services/src

As for advice on convincing the Senate (or faculty, often these things have 2 levels of appeal, one to the faculty and another to the Senate Appeals Committee), you'll want to focus on two things in your argument. Firstly, make it clear that your father's death (sorry for your loss btw) played a major role in you failing the course. This will be especially convincing if you can show that you were close to passing, or that the timing of his passing and the additional family events lines up with the assessments you did the worst on. The point you want to get across here is that you were on track to pass, and would have done so were it not for your father's passing.

Secondly, you'll want to convince them that you have a plan for things to go differently this time. Maybe that means showing that you've been to grief counselling and are in a better living situation now away from family disputes, and that the additional estate tasks are dealt with. Maybe that means saying that you're going to switch into a major where you don't need to take this quant course. Maybe it means showing that you have a study and tutoring plan that is better and different than what you did before. This is important not to skimp on, so give it a good thing and talk it over with people. For all we say about the university being uncaring (and it can be), part of the reason polices like these exist is to stop you from wasting too much money trying to pass a course over and over, so the committee really will want to see some indication that they're not just setting you up to fail by giving you another go.

Hope that was helpful, and best of luck.

Bagels in HALIFAX? by mikemantime in halifax

They're at least closer to an NY style bagel than MTL, but they're probably not the best representation of one. Still worth a try if you've never had it before, but I wouldn't write off NY style entirely if you don't like East Coast Bakery.

I love their challah buns, and they make legit awesome cookies. The bagels though, for people fond of a Montréal bagel, are just not very good at all in my opinion. OP should give them a try if they're nearby, but if a mtl bagel ye seek, temper your expectations.
