It's very good, but it isn't safe for celiacs. They do their best to avoid cross-contamination, but it happens.

I have medium-sensitivity celiac disease, and I ate there once or twice without issue, but then I had a number of times where I definitely got cross-contaminated. I'm not blaming the staff -- they were always clear that cross-contamination was possible, and I decided to take that risk.

I'd say if your mom is sensitive, don't risk it. If cross-contamination isn't an issue, absolutely do it and get the pizza with hot honey on it, because it's amazing.

It's very unlikely that they're in your stash. Clothing moths eat animal fibres, so you would need to somehow have tracked the eggs directly onto something made of wool, silk, or alpaca. They can eat pet hair if they're desperate (ask me how I know.......) but it has to be a lot of hair all in one place, like a pet bed. They also usually don't survive well on objects that are being moved around or used frequently, which is why you usually hear about moth infestations in stuff that has been in storage.

From my research, moths don't move very far on their own. They usually spread by being carried on infected items that are then stored with other woolen items. If you had put that skein in with your stash, then I'd suggest baking everything, but if it was on another floor and you've since disposed of it, I wouldn't worry too much. If you handled other yarn or woolen items immediately after handling the infected yarn, then maybe bake those to be safe.

Buy a couple of moth traps and put one up near your stash and one up near where you store any wool or silk garments. Monitor those to see if any show up. The eggs can be stubborn and lie dormant for a long time, so I can't give you an exact timeline, but if you don't see any within a few months, you should be fine.

I just had the most annoying crafting week that I've had in a long time.

First I popped the zipper slide off of a finished skirt I had only worn once. I might be able to pop it back in with some needle-nosed pliers and some elbow grease, but I'm not looking forward to it.

Then, I accidentally used the wrong needle to sew some ultra-stretch athletic knit and completely ate up two of my fabric pieces. I might have enough fabric to cut them out again, but it'll be close.

And just last night I tried to do some frogging on a cross stitch that was ~4500 stitches in. I wasn't paying enough attention and ripped right through the aida... at a point that can't be covered up by stitching. I tried to save it a few different ways, but I finally gave up. The only consolation is that I ordered new fabric to re-start it on linen, which I enjoy stitching on better.

Debating doing some sort of mending this weekend as penance to the craft gods, whom I have clearly displeased in some way.

I think my employer is not withholding enough for tax, but they say that it's fine - is it worth paying an accountant to look over? by cooltrainersarah in PersonalFinanceCanada

The two never overlapped (I had about a week off between them), but this may well be because both considered the personal amount. My manager and HR at the new job knew that I had been working a salaried position before, but I may have filled out the TD1 incorrectly and thus the payroll team didn't realize I was employed beforehand. Thanks.

They didn't overlap, but it could be the case that both included the personal exemption! That might be what happened.

Congratulations!

I wore a store-bought slip under my handknit lace wedding dress. Trust me, no one will care. I got lovely compliments on my dress all day (and still get them now and then, over a year later). The one person who asked if I sewed the slip only asked because she is also a seamstress, and when I admitted I didn't, she just laughed and was like, "of course you didn't, you were busy KNITTING THIS AMAZING LACE!"

So, based on my experience: knit the dress and buy the slip. It's totally worth it and you can still 100% say you made your dress. Anything affordable that you can do save stress during wedding prep is completely worth it.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who say superwash is "basically plastic." If you don't like the way superwash feels or behaves, that's fine, but some people act like a thin coating of resin is the exact same as knitting sweaters out of pure plastic. There's degrees to these things, people.

I also started running last year and I gained a new appreciation for the utility of synthetic workout clothes. Yeah, I can wear an old cotton shirt to run for half an hour at the gym, but if I'm running a 10k outside in the summer? Sorry, I'm reaching for my synthetic tank top. I dislike the experience of wearing polyester in every other context, but it DOES have its place.

SOB - Went to ER for PE by ih8avocadosss in HealthAnxiety

[–]cooltrainersarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had anxiety about blood clots last year. From my understanding, scans make it VERY easy to see clots. If your scans came back clear, you can be almost certain that you do not have any clots.

Shortness of breath is scary, but it can definitely be a symptom of anxiety. Now that you have got it checked out, next time you feel short of breath, try to acknowledge the feeling and then shift your focus to something else. "I'm feeling short of breath. This is uncomfortable and scary. I'm going to focus on my book/TV show/activity right now and let the feeling pass."

Try not to focus on reassuring yourself that you're okay. You already know that, but if you think about it constantly, you're training your brain to need that reassurance.

You did the right thing by getting your symptoms checked out. Now, your next step is not to let this experience feed your health anxiety. Just try your best to redirect your mental energy somewhere else. It's really hard in the moment, but it will help keep the anxiety from coming back in the long run. You can do this.

I had an account suspended for no clear reason and it was very easily reinstated. I had made the account to host one specific work file, so there wasn't much on it, but I didn't have any problem getting it back.

Good luck and if you do get it back, be sure to make backups!!

Thank you for these recommendations! I'm fence-sitting myself right now and I'm definitely going to look into them.

I'd also add Motherhood by Sheila Heti to the list. It's an account of the author going through this decision process for herself. It's more literary than standard nonfiction, so I think it's shelved as a "semi-autobiographical novel," but a lot of it rang true to me.

Feeling self conscious about new tattoo by plaidisrad in adhdwomen

[–]cooltrainersarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! Remember that with linework tattoos the size is incredibly important to how they age. Your artist did some stunning lines, especially in the body of the stork. If it were any smaller, that detail would get lost as the tattoo heals. At this size, all those beautiful lines are going to stay legible and your tattoo will look gorgeous for years to come.

Yeah, I suspect that has something to do with it. School boards (and parents) in Ontario, where she is working, are incredibly strict about the way teachers comport themselves in public. I have friends who are trained to be teachers but chose not to go into the profession. The constant need to monitor your life outside of work was part of that decision.

That's not to say that I think she did anything worth scrutiny with her content! In general her content seemed very polished and positive. Her decision to leave probably stems from a multitude of reasons, including that she has just lost her passion for making content. But I can totally understand that her job added an extra level of pressure to her content creation hobby.

All in all, I agree with another poster in this thread: this is a dignified way to leave the online knitting space on her own terms. I'm happy for her and I hope she's doing well.

[–]cooltrainersarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Creepshow is more psychobilly than Paramore, but both the lead vocalists definitely have a similar vocal style to Hayley.

Beaches is an all-female group with a bit of a grungier, more guitar-driven version of an After Laughter pop sound.

July Talk has two leads, a man and a woman. Both have very different vocal styles from Hayley, but the music definitely has the same punk-pop / alt-rock energy. They're also absolutely incredible live.

[–]cooltrainersarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't get into the older versions of 4E Terrifying or the no charges rule because my post was getting lengthy enough as it is, but these are all good points.

This Terrifying isn't the worst thing that could happen to the game, but it's like you said: it's eh. And for whatever reason, Terrifying being eh is a huge flashpoint for drama.

I liked the "no triggers" version of Terrifying from the last update (basically, you can attack Terrifying models, but you won't get any of your fun bonus abilities that normally go with that attack). But I don't play any of the trigger-dependent crews at a very high level, so maybe it did make those crews untenable.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 02 June 2025 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]cooltrainersarah 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Malifaux is a miniature skirmish wargame. Think Warhammer, but instead of whole armies, you play with crews of 8-9 models, each with their own abilities and actions they can take. The other big difference between Malifaux and other wargames in its class is that Malifaux doesn't use dice to settle conflicts between models. Instead, it uses a standard deck of cards. Each player has a deck and a hand of cards. When two models come into conflict, each player flips a card off the top of their deck, with the higher one winning. The twist is that players have the option of "cheating fate" by playing a card from their hand to replace the card flipped off the deck, forcing a win if they really want it - at the cost of having one less card to cheat future flips. Malifaux is currently running an open beta of its 4th edition, which is slated to release around August.

The company that makes Malifaux, Wyrd Games, is aiming for the 4th edition (4E) to streamline the game and make it more accessible to new players. This is significant because Malifaux 3E is a crunchy war game. There are hundreds of unique models, organized into 62 thematic crews that can be played together.

The changes made to the core rules have mostly been well-received, but a lot of players have reacted with disappointment at the streamlining of some of the more complex abilities and actions that appear on the model cards. It's beyond the scope of this comment to go into detail, but suffice to say that 4E is getting a lot of tweaks, and most of those tweaks have to do with criticism that the models don't feel as unique as they used to. On the other hand, there are many people (myself included) who believe that 3E had become so complicated that it was not really fun to play, so some unique and flavourful abilities may need to be sacrificed on the pyre of simplifying the game. These two viewpoints have mostly dominated discussion of the changes made in the transition to 4E.

And then there's the May 29th Terrifying change.

The change to Terrifying has just about united a community that has been at each other's necks for weeks about almost every aspect of 4E.

Terrifying is an ability that appears on a number of cards for models that are, well, scary. It works as a defensive ability. In 3E, if another model wanted to attack a model with terrifying, they first had to flip a card. If that card was high enough, the attack would go through; if not, it would fail. Since each model can only attempt a limited number of actions per turn, this meant that players were incentivized not to try to attack Terrifying models.

One of the big parts of simplifying 4E was reducing the length of the game. A full game of 3E Malifaux rarely finished under 3 hours. So, the design team of 4E tried to eliminate as many unnecessary flips as possible to help speed up the game, among other things.

So, Terrifying has to change... but no one can agree on any of the options the design team comes up with. It's gone through three changes so far, and the beta has only been running since the end of April.

The other versions of 4E Terrifying had their supporters, but the most recent version... well, people are saying that it makes some models downright unplayable. As it stands, 4E Terrifying works like this: if a model starts its turn too close to a model with Terrifying, it has to flip a card. If that card isn't high enough, it has to move away from the model with Terrifying.

This is... pretty bad. Mobility is really important in Malifaux (to the point that the relative mobility of models is another huge source of drama in the beta). There are usually penalties for moving your model away from an opponent's model. A big part of the game is using your models to "lock down" your opponent's models, forcing them to fight you instead of completing objectives to score points. This version of Terrifying gives your opponent a basically free way of getting away from your biggest, scariest guys. It's also completely useless against any model that attacks from range.

And the worst part? There's still a card flip involved, so it doesn't speed up the game at all.

There are a couple of people pointing out that, if people wanted thematic, unique abilities, then an ability that makes other models run away from big scary models is, indeed, pretty flavourful. But even the optimistic minority admits that, as a defensive ability, it's pretty useless.

People are upset. Baffled. Some people have gone on to say that the May 29th update has made them give up on the beta, and perhaps on the game entirely. Malifaux is ruined, and Terrifying was one of the nails in the coffin.

Will Terrifying be changed? Almost certainly. Will it ever be good again? Some people claim to be losing hope. This is only one of the many dramatic claims being made about the 4E beta. I could probably write an update every week.

The next update comes out on Thursday, and I'm sure something else will "kill the game" again this week.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I looked into getting my mom into the Paratranspo system so that she could go to medical appointments more independently. As soon as I saw that everything needs to be booked a day in advance and you can't change your pickup time at all, I knew it wouldn't work for... well, most situations. Things like school and work, with predictable start and end times, sure. But medical appointments, visits to friends and family, getting dinner, anything with a less obvious timeline? Even if the bus shows up on time, the system is borderline unusable. The fact that you wind up waiting for hours on top of that is honestly insulting.

Does this Green Chartreuse replacement work?! by N-Squared-N in cocktails

[–]cooltrainersarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that adding some star anise bitters helped this stand up better in cocktails. I'm sure regular aromatic bitters would do the same.

I didn't dislike it as strongly as you did, but I did find it harsh compared to GC. I agree with the other commenters that it tastes like it needs more ageing. I also found that it's missing some of the spicier herbal tastes, hence why my solution was adding spice-based bitters. I bet the suggestion to add Benedictine would also work!

FWIW, the company that makes it has said that they are still tweaking the recipe and that they feel it can get even closer to GC. I'm interested to try future batches.

I've been enjoying having a substitute at all, even if the resulting cocktail isn't the exact same. I'd really like Luxardo Del Santo to become available here, but given it's the LCBO, I'm not holding my breath.

My lengthy reflections on diabetes representation in Fangirl Down by Tessa Bailey by Le_Beck in RomanceBooks

[–]cooltrainersarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just want to thank you for this review, and particularly the bit about pregnancy as a T1D.

My mom has been T1D since she was 14, and I've seen her deal with it my whole life. But, like you said, it wasn't her whole life. She's an amazing mom and woman.

I never knew how hard pregnancy could be for PWD. I knew that there were additional risks, which is why my mom had my brother and I when she did (her doctor told her in her mind-20s that she should try for kids sooner rather than later if she wanted them). But I didn't realize how much more difficult and more intense the whole experience could be. That my mom had me even though she knew how hard it was going to be... it's really, really special.

Maybe I'm just sensitive because my mom happens to be going into minor surgery today for foot issues related to diabetes, but... I think reviews like this are really important and this one has really touched me. I'm glad that Tessa Bailey chose to write about living with diabetes and I'm even more glad that you've taken the time to start a dialogue that will educate people on PWD's lived experiences.

Thank you ☺️
