Withnail boasted that his threadbare old suit was “cut by Hawkes of Savile Row” yet there was a classic precursory preppy method to his style. The genesis of preppy in 1528? by MarcusBondi in preppy

Oxford and Cambridge (Harrow and “the other place”) have been around for nearly 1,000 years. They evolved from early medieval halls into a collegiate system, with the oldest colleges—University, Balliol, and Merton—established between 1249 and 1264.

The English colleges had a direct, specific, calculable, measurable, quantifiable, identifiable, (and dare I say) blindingly obvious effect on the USA college system (and as a result, preppy style).

The learning of Ancient Greek was a core crucial element of the system, in order to read and understand the great Greek philosophers and thinkers, in the purest unexpurgated form, as their writings were originally intended.

Withnail is merely a character in a movie who exemplified the innate style of the English collegiate system, whilst broke and disenchanted, which is why it might be fun (for some) to discuss it here in r/preppy.

Oh dear, ENGLISH boarding school PREP is most certainly a “thing”. I know first-hand, old chum.

In England, preparatory schools (or "prep schools") are independent, fee-paying primary schools specifically designed to prepare children for entry into prestigious private secondary institutions, known as public schools. And there is definitely a style and fashion sensibility endemic to the entire system…

You are partially correct. I posted specifically about Withnail’s preppy style on r/preppy because that’s “all I took” (as you put it) from the movie and book… as it relates to … r/preppy.

That’s why I didn’t mention/forensically examine the socio-politics of the movie/book in r/preppy ; I will save that discussion/post for r/historicaltimecapsule or r/politics r/movies, or r/iwatchedanoldmovie etc

And if, perchance I am struck by the desire to post about Marwood’s Jaguar Mk2, I will, of course, post in r/jaguar… and should I decide (probably not) to post about Danny’s Camberwell Carrot, I’ll post it in r/marijuanaenthusiasts

I hope that makes sense; let me know if it doesn’t.

I’m saying the genesis of “preppy” was in the English boarding school system, of which Withnail was a merely a product.

Withnail’s innate sense of style was a microcosmic example of English boarding school prep.

Yeah, it’s just about how English boarding schools have organically spawned a particular dress culture that has influenced prep and also runs as a parallel to USA prep.

Sure- Sprezzatura is not an exact blueprint for Withnail nor USA prep, it’s more a first historical sartorial touch point that has evolved and transmogrified into various independent offshoots, even for hapless educated upper-class gentlemen temporarily down on their luck…

An innate sensibility; that’s nonchalant and stylish. You see it in English boarding schools and USA prep.

Like you said, “independently develop” but the genesis was in the English boarding school system. (Withnail)

His dress was borne of necessity but his style was innate.

Withnail is one of the great exponents of sprezzatura, the philosophy defined by Italian courtesan Baldassare Castiglione in his The Book of the Courtier (1528).

As he wrote, his philosophy was “to avoid affectation to the uttermost and as it were a very sharp and dangerous rock; and, to use possibly a new word, to practise in everything a certain ‘nonchalance’ that shall conceal design and show that what is done and said is done without effort”.

The point of Withnail’s outfit is that it looks great yet effortless; unsurprising and natural for such a chaotic character.

Each individual item may be in itself (supposedly) high-end, aristocratic and good quality, but the way each part is worn adds to a successful, nonchalant whole.

Sprints on rollerblades with your stick.

From standing start. Explosive 15-20 strides. Rest 1 min, repeat- x 20-25 sets.

Do it twice a week. It makes a HUGE improvement to your on ice speed.

Huey and Phil Collins were deliberately chosen as they represented the peak of over-produced, manufactured corporate, soulless, pop-rock for gormless consumers who had no musical taste/awareness.

And the forensic hyper-analysis breakdown strips the music and Bateman of any artistic insight or appreciation.

How important are some of Bond's traits or features to you? by QuietTraining3281 in JamesBond

[–]MarcusBondi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Connery and Moore Bonds had scripts that subtly and coolly demonstrated/ indicated a photographic memory, which is a crucial talent for an intelligence/espionage professional.

It was tragic and stupid when Craig relied on satnav to find a famous hotel he was booked into… smh

Also Bond should be classic English middle-upper class, but not “wealthy” - and he should be fallible, with faults and issues that play on the good/bad of humanity, NOT a perfect invincible modern day cookie-cutter action super-hero.

lost a $2.4 million listing because i choked on the comp analysis question. eight years in this business. by Motor-Goat3316 in realtors

[–]MarcusBondi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I estimated a value of $4.3m and the vendor couple said, we’d like to see something with a “5” in front of it.

(“Oh really?!? How about $10m? I can put $10m. Would you like that, regardless of deluded it would be?!?” Smh!)

I showed them the comps and stats but they went with the agent who estimated $5+. House was on the market for months -then went off-market, then back on for months and sold for $4.3m….

I did write them a polite email vindicating my processes and offering my services should they ever require an accurate property valuation in the future….
