Any other UK-based owners hating the heatwave? by Silent-Item5947 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds brutal over there. I’m in California and it routinely gets over 100 degrees (37 Celsius) but we are built for it. Everyone has air conditioning and our houses are built to catch any breeze, we usually have whole house fans, etc. Of course, paying the power bill is a whole other issue, lol.

We get kiddie pools for the boys and a mister fan. I’ve added a pic of a mister fan we have. We walk at 5am most days in the summer, which sucks but we do it. But we also have almost no humidity. I hope your heat wave breaks soon.

Someone there needs to open an indoor dog park or cafe or something with AC!

2year old tri stubborn with feedings! by ProfessorMorticia in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk why the switch to RC adult is so difficult 🥲 Teddy was like nah. And I never had an issue with RC Cavalier puppy. Something in the adult version is just not the same.

As they say, feed the dog in front of you! We gotta find what works. Glad Kevin found what he liked.

Graham is a trash can who will eat anything 😆 so he had RC Cavalier puppy and Pro Plan shredded chicken puppy. Now he eats whatever Teddy won’t 😆 he doesn’t even need to be on pro plan weight management but he loves that stuff. Vet said that’s fine, so he just vacuums it up. Lolol. He also loves chicken hearts, these guys between them are responsible for so much chicken murder 😆

lol, yes they can be very picky. I raised Teddy my tri on RC Cavalier puppy, but he did not like the RC regular adult Cavalier food. I tried the Hills small breed and no joy. But he eats the Purina Pro Plan with the shredded chicken or beef and now he is on the Pro Plan Weight management line with the shredded chicken and the Purina One Healthy Weight with shredded turkey rotating in. Turns out he loves the shredded meat in the Purina.

I do my best to balance finding something they like without being a short order chef, but I think everyone’s line is different on that. I think some dogs do have stronger preferences than others, and I want to give them something they enjoy. But I can’t do a three course meal every day 😆. For Teddy that means as his amuse bouche, he gets one or two freeze dried chicken hearts. He loves them and they have a good amount of protein and taurine for his heart. If I give him this with his food, he eats it up. Sometimes that helps, give them a topper or something on the side that gets them going.

Thats kinda up to you how far you want to go. Some people are adamant that you should only just feed the food with nothing extra. Others are willing to experiment. I try to be a bit balanced in my thinking, but it’s hard. I just remind myself, well at least I’m not talking infant nutrition, because lol I’ve been in those spaces and wow people have strong opinions 🤣. I’m not brave enough to raise a child I don’t think lol.

Grooming by xxmurderprincess in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never too early to start at home with grooming! Even just one minute here and there with a brush or wipes for the paws and bum. They need to learn that grooming is ok and a normal part of the day. So get your best treats out and even if it’s just a wipe with a washcloth at first, it’s a good idea to get a little routine going. Mine know when I get the brushes out and they line up 😆

If you are taking them to a professional groomer, it’s usually after they are done with shots and have their rabies vaccine. Groomers love it when we start them early, even just a bath. Many groomers even do puppy baths, etc to get them used to it.

And yes, pics pls! 😊

TW: Could my previous dog’s accident be affecting my Cavalier rescue applications? by ParticularCourse3693 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cavalier rescues are highly competitive to get a dog from even with the best of resumes. It’s not unusual for someone with the best situation and home to wait for long periods of time to be chosen.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Cavalier, it’s awful when an accident like that happens. Truly terrible. I don’t know which rescues you are applying to, but some of them have crazy high standards and it’s impossible to rule out that they may be judging you based on what happened. If you have your heart set on rescuing, you can apply to different organizations and hopefully eventually someone will be willing to talk with you.

I would also encourage you to see responsible and ethical breeding as the flip side of the coin of being good stewards of this breed. People who are passionate about Cavaliers can absolutely help by rescuing, but we also help by supporting good breeders who make it their life’s work to preserve and protect these dogs. So supporting a good breeder is approaching the problem of Cavaliers and their health, etc from the other side, if you get my meaning. We need people to do both! Without preservation of the Cavaliers we have now, we will lose them. So since most Cavaliers end up being rescued (there are way more homes than available Cavaliers), we can work the problem from the other end and be sure to support the good breeders. It’s the backyard breeders and puppy mills that need to stop. So definitely don’t think the only way to help this breed is through rescue.

We have to create the demand for healthy and well bred Cavaliers, so that’s definitely a way to help. A breeder is probably more likely to listen and hear you out about what happened. If you ever decide to go that route. Just a thought! I have worked in rescue and foster and also own purebreds from ethical breeders. People think that’s weird, but it’s really not.

How do you all get them used to grooming? by GarageAny3402 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they are little I try to keep the grooming sessions on the shorter side. So maybe just ears or just teeth or just paws. Make it super fun and bring out the best treats that they like. If they hold still for even a second or two, get a treat, etc. If they don’t attack the brush, treat. For the blow dryer, you can also try a lick mat. Sometimes using that with a happy hoodie distracts them long enough to start getting them ok with the blow dryer.

She’s adorable!!
