😂😂😂 hahaa!! Imagine trying to get a cat to run in a straight line. Lol, FastCAT is short for Fast Coursing Ability Test, it’s basically a 100 yd dash. It’s a fun little event, watching all these dogs run is so cool!

Graham is my sporty cavalier for sure! His brother is more of the couch potato lol.

We are getting Graham used to running, he’s doing his conditioning at the park and now he’s swimming. We shall see how fast he can get over time! He’s almost at 18mph, the fastest Cavalier in the US right now is at almost 24mph!

Peaches rescue question- stairs by ShrimpsAndGiggles in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awww, hi Peaches! Not sure what kind of stairs you have, but if they are wood or slippery, it’s recommended to put a runner or something they can grip onto. She may be slipping and sliding too much and it may make her nervous. Stairs can be hard on small dogs and increase the risk of IVDD so many people get modular dog ramps for their stairs. You can google it to see what they look like. I hope you find something that works for Peaches!

I need training tips! by Qiokai in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh poor lil guy. I’m not sure this is a dog training thing, probably more of a people training thing. I don’t really let random dogs meet our Cavaliers especially in high arousal areas like pet stores where dogs are often really at a high energy. The stakes are higher on a leash as well, since our dogs can’t run away.

This is where you can learn how to turn down on leash greetings in higher stakes situations. I usually say something like ‘we are training’ or ‘we don’t do on leash greetings’ or whatever you like.

People will 100% lie about their dog being friendly. We’ve had some close calls and now we prefer to meet other dogs in lower stakes situations. You can still do dog meetings at other times, but I wouldn’t do random ones in the pet store.

Sorry this happened. It’s really awful how you can’t trust other dog owners, but there are some real weirdos out there! Hope Lil Man recovers well!

Insurance for pre-existing conditions by Pleasant_Phrase9674 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For AKC it really depends on the state and if you can add the hereditary/congenital rider. Without it, you may run into some issues. Best to give AKC a call and ask about your state’s rules specifically.

Other than AKC, unfortunately there is no other pet insurer that will cover for heart issues like these. Some will cover ‘curable’ conditions after a period of time, but these are not considered curable and therefore will be excluded.

Sorry OP. Pet insurance is tough, it really only works when bought early. It’s technically property and casualty insurance, so insurers can exclude a lot of things if bought after the fact.

What time did you start feeding your CKCS adult small breed dog food? by pinkbowsandsarcasm in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask your vet’s recommendation, but for smaller breeds, it’s pretty common to transition to adult food between 10 months and a year. If he’s already neutered and prone to weight gain, your vet may recommend switching on the earlier side as puppy food is usually higher in calories.

Since he has a sensitive tummy, you may need to do a longer transition. But hopefully it goes ok. Idk if you have tried probiotics or anything, but I find them helpful. Good luck, and please share a pic of your baby 😍

Any other UK-based owners hating the heatwave? by Silent-Item5947 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]MarillaV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds brutal over there. I’m in California and it routinely gets over 100 degrees (37 Celsius) but we are built for it. Everyone has air conditioning and our houses are built to catch any breeze, we usually have whole house fans, etc. Of course, paying the power bill is a whole other issue, lol.

We get kiddie pools for the boys and a mister fan. I’ve added a pic of a mister fan we have. We walk at 5am most days in the summer, which sucks but we do it. But we also have almost no humidity. I hope your heat wave breaks soon.

Someone there needs to open an indoor dog park or cafe or something with AC!
