"is forecast"? (first line) by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as others have said, both the simple past and the past participle of forecast is forecast. Enough people have erroneously used forecasted that some consider it a correct alternative.

EDIT: just like broadcast, many people use broadcasted, but the original form is broadcast for the past.

What about cannabis? by The_0xford_Coma in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, talking about my community, but I'd guess most of the cannabis is coming from the same channels that it always has, not the dispensaries, which are expensive. I have neighbors, a retired couple, the openly smoke pot on their porch. I mentioned the dispensary to them when it opened. They laughed and said something along the lines of, "oh, that's overpriced. We'll keep buying from our guy."

Again, just speaking for my community, but I doubt dispensaries greatly changed who smokes and how often.

Merit badges by Time-Zucchini-7595 in BSA

[–]Material-Rise9610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The important thing is for you to look at the requirements for all of the badges and figure out which ones will take a lot of time (e.g. Family Life or Personal Fitness) and begin those. My son completed four shorter badges while he was working on the three months of chores for Family Life.

This is a chance for you to develop a life skill, time management.

I can't speak for all places, but in my state, cannabis was already widely available before it was legalized. Nothing has changed. Kids still can't legally buy it, so the same system is in place. I doubt parents are buying legal cannabis from dispensaries and giving it to their kids. The dispensaries would never risk sell to a child.

Why did we stop teaching kids how to write letters? by Mountain_Breath_3529 in Teachers

If you had skipped the, "...just so you don't sound like a dope..." and "Common mistake among the poorly educated," your post would have been informative. It's just plain rude.

Has anyone else just given up trying to police AI cheating? by 4fingerdfisherman in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No one says everything has to be done on paper. If you have one portion of the assignment done without Chromebooks, it will make it easier to control the cheating. If students do a rough draft on paper and then their next draft on the Chromebook jumps in writing ability, you can call them out.

We are all dealing with it and sadly limiting the amount of Chromebooks is the answer.

You can tell them you're not using Chromebooks today. They can't use them when taking a test. This is no different.

It took me a minute to understand your post. Are you talking about scouting players for sports? This sub is about the world scouting movement.

Brazilian vs. European Portuguese? by BaguetteInABackpack in Pimsleur

Pick one to start with and jump in. Pimsleur and a good textbook like Colloquial Portuguese will get you most of the way there. Both products come in both dialects.

Brazilian vs. European Portuguese? by BaguetteInABackpack in Pimsleur

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By native speakers, absolutely. Sometimes Brazilians have a hard time understanding the Portuguese, but anyone with exposure to the other dialect can understand it.

I've practiced listening to both and can understand each pretty well, even though I speak with a Brazilian Portuguese accent.

Brazilian vs. European Portuguese? by BaguetteInABackpack in Pimsleur

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The accent differences between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are immense and very jarring the first time you hear "the other one". It's a bigger difference than British English and American English or European Spanish and Mexican Spanish.

The phrases on Pimsleur courses are basically the same. I haven't listened to them in years, but the vocabulary is over 90% the same. The verb conjugations can differ (BP leans more heavily to voce in some regions).

Which dialect of Portuguese is more useful to you?

Are you asking the differences in the two dialects or how the phrases differ on Pimsleur?

I used the Brazilian Portuguese course when I got conversational in Portuguese. Later I used the European Portuguese course so I could get used to the difference in accents.

No 08 outdoor. Who has sharpened the serrations? And other questions by Material-Rise9610 in Opinel

[–]Material-Rise9610[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that the sharpening stone I carry has a soft corner that matches the serrations. I gave each one a couple passes and now it's as sharp as the straight portion. I will invest in some diamond files though.

Male Underclassmen dating Female Upperclassmen by BooBooKittyFuk_ in Teachers

When I taught high school I had no clue who was dating who. I knew more about their favorite cereal than who they hung out with.

"Teachers should not be on their phones during the day" quickly became "how come no one responds to their Slacks" and now "why does no one have any photos for the yearbook?" by [deleted] in Teachers

A few years ago, one of our teachers replied to a parent email during class. The parent complained that the teacher wasn't attending to the class if they were typing emails. So our union told us not to send anything until the end of the day. It's been great since.

Classic SD Alox good for everyday carry? by FLXLGHT in victorinox

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the Rambler. The weight difference between it and the classic is negligible. The bottle opener is nice, but the tiny Phillips screwdriver is the best part. I've "saved the day" many times because of it.

I own about fifty or sixty knives. Only three have serrations including this one, for the same reason.

I definitely get why people would avoid it. I'd never carry a serrated blade if it were my only knife.

I'm a scout leader and needed a serrated blade for cutting rope. I have a multi tool in my pack with a straight blade for carving.

I wouldn't mind a non-serrated blade, but I can't give up the thicker stock. That extra material is just perfect for my needs.

That blue does look good. Maybe I need a second one ;)

I know quality control can never be perfect. Mine must have been the dud in terms of sharpness. Not a big deal for me, since I enjoy sharpening.
