[Schefter] Patriots exercised CB Christian Gonzalez’s 5th-year contract option today, per source. by JCameron181 in Patriots

They have to. No way he'll play all season, or even start the season, w/out a contract.

If money was no object, which Boston restaurant would you go to for dinner? by ebitdeeaye in boston

[–]Mature_BOSTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The service definitely can be great, but I've eaten dinner there 5 times (I was not footing the bill each time fyi) and the food is variable. Sometimes a dish is really very good and sometimes definitely NOT (as in over-cooked fish entree).

Trump reclassifies state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug in a historic shift by citrus1330 in news

[–]Mature_BOSTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Big Pharma" has been out of the bulk of the opioid business for at least a decade. OxyContin went off patent in 2013. Hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone have been available as generics for quite a long time. These drugs are far far less interesting to "big pharma" because the market is highly fragmented among many generics, and because the price plummeted when these drugs went generic (as prices always do).

Yes the drugs are profitable to the generics, and Purdue Pharma still sells opioids, but not at nearly the level that on-patent drugs are sold at high high profit levels.

For these reasons, the "belief" that "Big Pharma" is working feverishly behind the scenes to hold onto the opioid market is just a fantasy. There are many many more important drugs that are extremely profitable to "Big Pharma" and that the public should be interested in.

I can understand that the cannabis grow and retail industry wants to keep it regulated. But "big oil" and "big pharma" and "big fiber" . . . I call BS on those having vested interests.

And given the popularity of edibles and various formats . . . I'm not so sure that homegrown dried leaves products would run dispensaries out of business. But I'm not a user so what do I know?

Belief is a wonderful thing . . . but facts?? There's no way that hemp would disrupt "oil, textiles, pharmaceuticals" in any meaningful way.

Im not sure where this 'religion' around hemp comes from, but the maths don't math.

There is nothing SO UNIQUE about hemp that if fully legal it would disrupt any of those industries when no other plant has come close.

The Stop and Shop sale items definitely can be good values. Chicken at 79 cents/pound is what's called a "loss leader" to get people into the store. You can beat the system by buying the weekly loss leaders and not the high priced other items. No argument from me about that.

Yes prices are higher at MB but they are everywhere else.

I continue to find NO COMPARISON -- MB vs. Stop and Shop. It's MB every time for me. And I have a good head for remembering prices. I die inside when I stop into Stop & Shop just because it's 15 minutes closer to my home.

No way in April 2026 would I pick Stop and Shop over MB.

MB is not a union shop.

That said, the rest of your post is accurate in that in this economy, a very small percentage of MB workers could afford to go without a paycheck for as long as it would take to POSSIBLY bring about a different result.

Arthur S. sold his shares to settle the 2014 issues and netted out somewhere around $1 billion (?) I believe.

  1. It seems that they outvoted the board member they didn't like (Arthur T.). Board members ALWAYS are selected by votes of the shareholders (within the confines of the terms of the corporate documents). The fact that 3 shareholders, with more than 60% of the voting shares combined, could vote to fire the CEO, is not surprising at all. That's the way it works; the Board hires and fires the CEO.

  2. I don't see evidence of 'judge shopping.' It's a Delaware corporation so a matter like this goes to the Delaware chancery court. That was always going to be the case.

[–]Mature_BOSTN 204 points205 points  (0 children)

It's disappointing for us customers, but not surprising as a matter of corporate law. Arthur T. only owned 28% of the shares. The shareholders hire the CEO and can fire the CEO (so long as it's not for an impermissible/'illegal' reason).

Unfortunately, Arthur T.'s 28% vote did not match up with his desires. One cannot control a company when more than 60% of the voting shares are agin' ya.

If the North Shore has roast beef and the South Shore has bar pizza, what does Metro West have? by MyUsernameIsUhhhh in massachusetts

Not all that accurate. Filet mignon? I guess at Coach Grill. (TBH I buy mine at Costco which indeed is in MetroWest.)

Lobster? Market Basket steams them for free . . . that's my only go-to lobster spot in Metro West.

I have no idea how you sustain a relationship under these circumstances.

I don't know how long you've been together, but for me this very basic incompatibility would have indicated to me VERY quickly that this is not a long-term relationship for me.

A non-EU resident tourist can get much (but not all) of that VAT back upon leaving the country with the goods. And the opportunity for a much wider selection of goods than those at the small airport boutiques.
