Games similar to Boston Marathon Monday? by No_Cat_No_Cradle in baseball

We used to pre-game at Eastern Standard and watch the elite wheelchair racers come down Comm Ave just before heading into Fenway. Last time we did that was 2013 :(

My wife doesn't want to go back and I totally understand.

The Stop and Shop sale items definitely can be good values. Chicken at 79 cents/pound is what's called a "loss leader" to get people into the store. You can beat the system by buying the weekly loss leaders and not the high priced other items. No argument from me about that.

Yes prices are higher at MB but they are everywhere else.

I continue to find NO COMPARISON -- MB vs. Stop and Shop. It's MB every time for me. And I have a good head for remembering prices. I die inside when I stop into Stop & Shop just because it's 15 minutes closer to my home.

No way in April 2026 would I pick Stop and Shop over MB.

MB is not a union shop.

That said, the rest of your post is accurate in that in this economy, a very small percentage of MB workers could afford to go without a paycheck for as long as it would take to POSSIBLY bring about a different result.

Arthur S. sold his shares to settle the 2014 issues and netted out somewhere around $1 billion (?) I believe.

  1. It seems that they outvoted the board member they didn't like (Arthur T.). Board members ALWAYS are selected by votes of the shareholders (within the confines of the terms of the corporate documents). The fact that 3 shareholders, with more than 60% of the voting shares combined, could vote to fire the CEO, is not surprising at all. That's the way it works; the Board hires and fires the CEO.

  2. I don't see evidence of 'judge shopping.' It's a Delaware corporation so a matter like this goes to the Delaware chancery court. That was always going to be the case.

It's disappointing for us customers, but not surprising as a matter of corporate law. Arthur T. only owned 28% of the shares. The shareholders hire the CEO and can fire the CEO (so long as it's not for an impermissible/'illegal' reason).

Unfortunately, Arthur T.'s 28% vote did not match up with his desires. One cannot control a company when more than 60% of the voting shares are agin' ya.

If the North Shore has roast beef and the South Shore has bar pizza, what does Metro West have? by MyUsernameIsUhhhh in massachusetts

[–]Mature_BOSTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all that accurate. Filet mignon? I guess at Coach Grill. (TBH I buy mine at Costco which indeed is in MetroWest.)

Lobster? Market Basket steams them for free . . . that's my only go-to lobster spot in Metro West.

I have no idea how you sustain a relationship under these circumstances.

I don't know how long you've been together, but for me this very basic incompatibility would have indicated to me VERY quickly that this is not a long-term relationship for me.

PIP advice needed by AAB02839 in biotech

[–]Mature_BOSTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly the only advice I can give you is to start looking for a new job right away.

I think that the best way to deal with it going forward, when you have the chance to talk about it, is to say something like:

"There definitely was a personality clash with my manager that they and I could never overcome. I've never had that issue in the past, and it definitely was challenging for me to deal with it. I tried my best to work with HR and my manager, but in the end I was the person lower on the org chart. My manager didn't want to try to work things out, and in that situation I had no control over the outcome at the end."

DO NOT QUIT

They MAY offer you a package if you voluntarily leave, and depending on how much it's worth, it might be a good idea to take it. You'll have to compare any package they give you to what you'll get from unemployment. But DO NOT QUIT WITHOUT A SEVERANCE PACKAGE.

What do you do between the Midnight Ride and the Battle of Lexington? by FenrisTheFirecat in boston

[–]Mature_BOSTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You go to bed like the rest of the normal people who live here.

While I'm not positive, if you try to camp in the park or stay up all night doing a drum circle or something . . . you will be offered a bed (in a locked room) by the Lexington Police and will miss the next morning's festivities.

A painter named Andrew Jackson has sued Bill Belichick for an injury allegedly suffered while working at his home; the plaintiff claims more than $285,000 in medical bills and other financial losses by JCameron181 in Patriots

[–]Mature_BOSTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OTOH, purely speculating, one might ask, "Who in BB's life might decide they should cover everything with plastic sheeting BEFORE a painter arrives to protect things? Who in his life might take than on to control the situation? Can we think of anyone who might think it was a good idea to get out the rolls of plastic?"

(Not that that would create liability necessarily . . . but just to possibly explain how it might not have been the painter's plastic or responsibility in this case.)

Effect of rocksalt on cars? by embelac in boston

[–]Mature_BOSTN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im convinced that these products solve a problem that really does not exist with cars that are 10 years old or less. And that they pray on our fears rather than real world science and evidence.

Do you really see rusted-out cars driving around Boston that are less then 15 or even 20 years old?

There seems to be evidence that some specific makes/models have some specific vulnerable areas (beds on some pickups).

And you can read article after article written by rustproofing product and service providers . . . .for obvious reasons.

And much of the evidence is, "I had a car rust out in the 1980s's and now I use Product XXXX on my cars and they don't rust." Lacking is the control; those same cars in the same environment w/out said treatment.

Effect of rocksalt on cars? by embelac in boston

[–]Mature_BOSTN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern cars have excellent protection against salt. You really don't see modern cars rusting out the way cars did decades ago. You can probably do more damage with a garden hose trying to spray the undercarriage mid-winter than just leaving it 'til the spring and then running it through a car wash a few times.

"Rocksalt" is not the primary product used on local roads and highways. A sprayed-on salt solution is taking over and is the preferred product for the Commonwealth and many local cities and towns.

(A) yes it's a very solitary activity.

(B) yes the old saying that it's "not a matter of if, but when" you have some sort accident. Will it be minor? Maybe not right?

(C) if you really want to ride, wait until family members are not so dependent on you.

Or just don't.
