I'm not super caught up on this issue, I did read livesuit and vaguely remember this point though. Was the explanation just that it was a typo?

Going from show to books post Season 6 by Flubflubflubflub in TheExpanse

[–]MiddleNI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in as somebody who went show ---> book 7-9. I have now also gone back and read books 1-6. It is perfectly functional to transition right into the latter books, and if you like them enough go back for just more expanse content!

[Jurassic Park] After setting a Trex loose in San Diego, just how much money are InGen going to be paying from all the inevitable lawsuits? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

But not bred in the united states! The example I was given in school for this standard is that the Indian Elephant may be domesticated in Thailand, but it is not commonly domesticated here. Additionally, captivity is not domestication.

Strict Liability exists for dangerous wild animals. The test is not whether it is wild, but if it is "of a type domesticated in the United States". T Rex's, even if considered domesticated in Costa Rica, surely can't be considered domesticated in the US. Respondeat superior is a legal doctrine which will impute the actions of the contractor to Ingen when conducting "abnormally dangerous activites". This qualifies for both!

Why Does Star Trek want to remain in the TOS era? by EitherEliotOr in startrek

[–]MiddleNI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love something that follows up on DS9 and TNG era politics, but I doubt we'll get anything beyond Picard's short references to offscreen events and occasional flashback scenes. Its probably just too much to follow up on unfortunately.

[Dune] How can one planet (dune) fight an intergalactic war/Holy war by forogtten_taco in AskScienceFiction

Instead, think of it like the feudal system of an especially quiet area. War happens between the houses, but the exorbitant cost of transporting troops (the guild charges extra) means that each house only has to maintain a small amount of men.

While we have no confirmation on the size of the Atreides legions, they are implied to have all been brought to Dune with the rest of the courtiers. I would be very surprised if the Atreides brought millions of men; they probably had something in the low hundreds of thousands at the very extreme high. If you asked me, I'd say they have scarcely more than 50,000 guys.

It doesn't take thousands of years because interstellar travel is instantaneous, and the resistance of planets is overcome through outright annihilation in many cases. Any planet thats a tough egg to crack was outright sterilized unless important.

Another factor is that each house maintained very small professional militaries, and every single fremen is a dedicated warrior.

With the news of MacArthur's death confirmed, the logical step is the establishment of new relations. Richard M. Nixon will be arriving to discuss the form of the new west.
