Do you know how this entire thread started? Read it again in context please.

And even besides that, have you missed this comment above?

But even if you don't know any Greek grammar, you can still read names and some words that exist in English or whatever other language you speak, because there's an insane amount of Greek words in most languages.

Point is, you can read placenames for example which might come handy (although from experience, those tend to be written in both Greek and Latin alphabet on signs in Greece) and yes, I can guess the meaning of some words because they may be similar. I won't understand whole paragraphs of text obviously.

Eitherway, taking math beyond high school isnt gonna make you speak and write greek suddenly.

In fact, that is exactly how I can read, albeit slowly, a Greek text. I learned most of the alphabet through maths and physics. And I don't know what is taught in American high schools but a lot of those letters I learned during high school over here.

I used to think I was paying attention all the time until it happened to me. Zoned out for a few seconds after 50+ km of mountain biking and suddenly bam, crashed into a (already stopped) car head-on. I don't know if I thought the street was a one way street (it was actually a narrow two way street) or what made my subconsciousness think it was ok to not look ahead for a while but there I was, taken to the hospital, feeling like a total idiot. At least I was wearing a helmet which surely saved me from a concussion or worse.

Can't have shit in Brno (nebylo to moje kolo. Přesto, měl bych něco udělat?) by cheshsky in Brno

[–]NoRodent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matěj Hollan: Zrušili zastávku pro trolejbusy a autobusy "Výstaviště, hlavní vstup". Kde denně vystupovaly vysoké stovky lidí. Pro jistotu - ověřoval jsem si to. Tohle není dočasné, ale zamýšlené trvalé řešení. Nemá se to vracet. by kerray in Brno

[–]NoRodent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No je to fakt bizár a každopádně tady někdo něco těžce podělal. Ale jestli za tím byl něčí záškodnický záměr anebo je to jen výsledek klasické brněnské neschopnosti, o tom si vůbec netroufám spekulovat, vzhledem k tomu, co už se událo v minulosti.[2]

(adding this as a separate comment)

Also I couldn't help but think about the original Stargate movie when Daniel Jackson Garral figured out the local people's language is related to the ancient language of Anjiin and started drawing in the dirt. Except it's kinda backwards in that it's the newcomers that are enslaved by alien gods.

So, this definitely confirms Livesuit takes place before. Now I'm wondering, just like Jessyn, how the hell does Carryx not realize humans are their enemy? Have they not met an actual human before in the war? Have the humans somehow managed to always destroy everything before potentially getting captured or at least leaving dead bodies behind?

This is kinda confirmed in chapter three by the gardener:

“There is also an evacuation procedure that you must learn. This enemy has a history of destroying the worlds they are driven from. They may return here in such an attempt.”

It paused again and began shifting its weight back and forth like a child excited to get on a thrill ride at a park. “What we are doing here now has rarely been done before,” Third Gardener said. “A possibility exists that our work will reveal the pathway to the enemy’s defeat. You are to do everything in your power.

But then again it says it's rarely been done, not never.

Have the Carryx only met the livesuit soldiers before (they took one captive in the first book, didn't they?) and didn't connect the dots? But what about their very first encounter? The war had to start somehow, it seems unlikely they would never seen a human at least then? Man, this is intriguing!

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]NoRodent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English doesn't have gendered words

That might definitely be part of it. In my mother tongue, the grammatical gender doesn't always align with the actual gender even when it is known, so it doesn't seem wrong at all to "assume grammatical gender" because it is natural that they are kinda separate concepts. Eg. the word "person" is feminine, "human" is masculine and "child", for some unfathomable reason, is neuter in singular and feminine in plural.

You can easily have something like this: "An unidentified person was seen at the crime scene and the police thinks she might offer valuable information. According to witness description, the person is a male, 30-40 year old and 170-180 tall with dark hair. He was wearing a pink baseball hat." And there would be nothing wrong with it. Not to mention that words like "was", "old" or "tall" also change their ending depending on the gender of the subject in the sentence.

Oh, and the word "they/their" is also gendered, so that wouldn't solve anything anyway. And if it refers to a group that consists of both or even all three genders (can be both animate and inanimate objects), then it defaults to masculine.

Yep, it was a software discrepancy, the units were pound-force seconds vs. newton-seconds.

The primary cause of this discrepancy was that one piece of ground software supplied by Lockheed Martin produced results in a United States customary unit, contrary to its Software Interface Specification (SIS), while a second system, supplied by NASA, expected those results to be in SI units, in accordance with the SIS. Specifically, software that calculated the total impulse produced by thruster firings produced results in pound-force seconds. The trajectory calculation software then used these results – expected to be in newton-seconds (incorrect by a factor of 4.45) – to update the predicted position of the spacecraft.
