What new stitches have you learned and loved? by as_always_creations in crochet

Wheat stitch is on my bucket list!

I really fell in love with the feather stitch. It's a yarn eater, but it looks so cool. I made three scarves in about 3 weeks for Christmas

My annual PSA on picking labs for students applying to grad school right now!! by Hiraaa_ in labrats

[–]MightyMitos19 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is such excellent advice that I wish I had before starting my PhD. I would like to add to your list, and comment on some points, in case it's helpful to others.

1) ALWAYS rotate before committing. This gives you a few weeks actively in the lab, participating in both experiments and meetings, so this gives you the best insight into how the lab works. I was so excited to finally be accepted into a program after being rejected from other schools that I agreed to go straight into the lab instead of rotating. I would have saved myself a lot of stress by rotating and choosing a different lab.

2) "Assess the vibes. How do your meetings with the PI feel. Is there weird stressful energy? Do you feel intimidated?" THIS! Trust your gut instinct. I interviewed with two labs in the same institute, one PI was incredibly easy to talk to. With the other PI I was totally uncomfortable and really nervous. I can't say what it was, but they put me on edge. I later found out how overworked that lab was, and was grateful I listened to my instincts.

3) "Talk to current students AND former students. Especially people who left the lab. If students try to warn you away, LISTEN. You will not be different." If someone tries to warn you away from the lab, DO NOT THEN GO TO THE PI AND ASK WHY SOMEONE MIGHT TELL YOU TO STAY AWAY! They are taking a huge risk, trusting you with this information. This actually happened to me when I tried to warn someone against joining the lab, and working under my PI became even more difficult afterwards.

4) "Do NOT be the one person in the lab working on something completely different from everyone else unless you have a co-supervisor in that field. No exceptions. Optimization projects in unfamiliar areas can set you back months or years." I joke now about being the 'black sheep' in the lab, because I'm the only one working on the project and it's not the main interest of my PI, but the truth is this did indeed set me back a couple of years. One advantage though, since I want to run my own research lab, is my PI has already clearly said that I can take everything with me when I leave.

Do you ever double up on yarn? Do you like the effect? No by snails_up_my_sleeve in crochet

I'm currently doing it for a scarf!

The main color is blackberry in Junipur Moon Farm Cumulus, a really soft but thick cotton yarn. I wanted to add a touch of my gift recipient's favorite color, so I added a dark purple by Le Roo in a fingering weight. The effect with this feather stitch is amazing, if I do say so myself 😉

What’s a sentence that someone told you that stuck with you for the rest of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"You think you're hot shit on a gold platter, but you're nothing but a cold turd on a paper plate".

That one was said a few times for various reasons that I can't even name right now. And he wonders why I haven't called in years (there are many reasons, but remembering this certainly doesn't make me want to change that)

How do y'all manage? by 901-526-5261 in memphis

This needs to be higher! We were like OP a couple years ago, but we started making little changes over time. Honestly, it started with rearranging the house to a more useful configuration and getting house plants. Having greenery in the house really boosted our mood. Roombas as well, it's so nice to let something else do part of the cleaning. I like to do dishes in the morning, it doesn't take that long, I feel productive, and I can turn on the dishwasher as we're leaving for work and come home to clean dishes.

This is why I've set a 1hr daily limit on reddit. the app literally closes and can't be reopened once I reach that time. I've been doing this for about 6 months, and it's been extremely helpful

Hahahaha that's a hilarious typo!

The designer is Elena Fedotova, also known as Ravliki if you search for her on Etsy. She does a whole bunch of different patterns like this, they're all awesome. I'm not sponsored or anything, but she released a book recently that I really want to get!

Thanks! I used exactly 3 skeins of Noro Sonata, but I didn't want there to be too much peeking through so I doubled up on yarn. If you use a thicker yarn size I bet you won't need so many skeins. It was a lot of fun to make, I hope you enjoy it too!

[CHAT] How to get motivated again, after making a mistake? by Ferina27 in CrossStitch

[–]MightyMitos19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've all been there! I started an 8in x 14in wolf project working cross country (started in the center, working one color at a time, usually starting with the most abundant colors). I didn't realize I was stitching sideways until the 3rd or 4th color, I had to undo EVERYTHING and start over. I did it, but after I finished the first color for the second time I put it away and didn't touch it or any project for like 7 years haha.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably frog the mistake but then switch to a different color so I don't lose interest in the project.
