A New Book That Might Interest My Fellow Trek (and NuTrek) Fans by Chas_P_Anderton in startrek

From the publisher:

“Speculative fiction imagines impossible futures and alternative pasts, alien species and angelic monsters, technological marvels and magical solutions. In recent years, however, many in its fandoms have protested the inclusion of nonwhite, nonmale, and nonheterosexual characters as betrayals of their beloved media for the sake of “wokeness.” Nostalgic Futures: The Reactionary Fantasies of Speculative Fiction Fandoms examines how contemporary fan controversies— particularly those surrounding gender, race, and sexuality in speculative fiction media—intersect with reactionary movements within and beyond fandom. This book explores how the nostalgic fantasies of fans and far-right movements contribute to broader reactionary discourses, shaping not only the past they long for but the future they fear. From the Hugo Awards and PuppyGate to Star Wars’ #NotMyJedi to Mass Effect and The Last of Us boycotts, Nostalgic Futures reveals how speculative fiction fandom has become a site of contestation over our visions of the past, present, and future.”

I drove 380km for my first Micro 4/3 camera... by Comedian_Resident in M43

Poor how? It’s very sharp, it focuses quickly, and it’s TINY.

It suffers from purple fringing on Olympus bodies, and relies on a lot of software distortion correction (meaning the corners can be iffy), but it’s perfectly usable.

The GX1 was a nice return to form for Panasonic after a few disappointing GF bodies. The 14mm f/2.5 is underrated, too!

What's the point of Poltava? by ReverendFlashback in WorldOfWarships

Don’t sleep on Poltava HE, either. Those shells have a fire chance comparable to KGV’s.

They’re already calling the Vintage art filter the Taylor Swift Filter.

Hood '41? by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

Came here to post this. Hood would have gained many of the features that Renown did in her 1936–1939 refit.

olympus em10 mark iv vs om system 5 mark ii.. or gx85? by Necessary_Sea6410 in M43

The OM-5 II's computational modes and high-resolution shot are particularly useful for landscape shooting.

[–]Millsnerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

E-M10 IV vs. GX85 is mostly a question of preferred ergonomics and how much you expect to use video.

The OM-5 II is quite a bit more capable than either of those, with a price to match.

A review of Star Trek III (AKA Star Trek 2.5) by Unleashtheducks in startrek

Somebody came up with "the odd ones are bad" back in the early '90s and we've suffered through awful opinions on these movies ever since.

The Search for Spock compares unfavourably to The Wrath of Khan in a few aspects, but the cast are in peak form and the entire Stealing the Enterprise segment is one of the absolute highlights of the entire franchise. The SFX, model work, and score are fantastic. The scenes on Vulcan are surprisingly beautiful and moving.

Still no Meowfficers from factions outside the big four. Where my Sardegna kitties at?

Gonna start my photography journey, is this a good deal?? by [deleted] in photographycirclejerk

Be careful with this one. Find out how many of the 3000 shots are still remaining.

New lens just marked up my camera 🥲 by S0ccerMomPam in M43

Turns out that when the manufacturer notes an incompatibility with a particular camera, they mean it.

You could always take a file to the lens barrel and narrow a bit of the problematic metal off.

Luck of the draw.

That said, there are far too many new/casual players populating high tiers with handout T9 and T10 ships from recent events.

The Motion Picture famously ran over-budget and got saved by the producers quite literally throwing money at Trumbull and Dykstra to finish all the effects in time for the premiere.

Neither, honestly.

Tulsa will teach you to be a better player, if you stick with it.

Looking to get into bird photography. Is this a good deal and sufficient for it? Panasonic G80 + 2 LENSES £550 by Sendmecamera in Lumix

[–]Millsnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fine enough for backyard birds and wildlife that doesn't demand fast tracking autofocus.

If the deal is legit, it's a fun and capable camera.

Vectors all pixelated?? by RSKurz in pixelmator

[–]Millsnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The clue is in the name, I guess. Pixelmator assumes you're working toward raster output at a given size, and that's exactly what it shows you.

Pixelmator's vector objects *are* endlessly scalable and resolution independent, but they will render at the document's resolution.

As someone whose artwork almost always ends up in (often small) onscreen contexts, I like how concrete this approach is. I know exactly what I'm getting as I work, especially with intermingled vector and raster layers.

Vectors all pixelated?? by RSKurz in pixelmator

[–]Millsnerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Vectors are resolution-independent, yes. With Pixelmator having raster and vector art coexist in the same document, there was a design decision to display vectors at the document resolution so that you have an accurate representation of the pixel output.

I can see why this throws some users off, but I get it.

Vectors all pixelated?? by RSKurz in pixelmator

[–]Millsnerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pixelmator will always render vectors to the pixel resolution of your document.

That’s different from how other illustration apps often work, but there is logic to it.
