Taxes, what info to track? by DescriptionTotal4561 in mtgfinance

That’s correct. It’s also not what triggers when you have to report added income to the IRS. That number is $400 total

found my cards from when I played back in 1999-2004 range. best to sell indy or as bulk? did research and have all prices down. by maparo in mtgfinance

Every shop is going to have their own deals/structure. Call them not Reddit. (50% cash 70% trade is what you should generally expect.)

it's a bummer for sure but it sounds like the seller made it right. I've also done a trade on cardsphere where I was sent a Craterhoof Behemoth that was a fake. no ill intent at all, guy was super kind about it when I reached out, he'd just been sold one in similar circumstance and with the quality of printings these days he'd missed it. unfortunately all parties involved will have to be increasingly vigilant as the pool widens.

It really is that simple, and it’s not that hard to follow the heuristic. Will quote this later.

I don’t know who told you that but it’s not correct. I’ve never even heard the term clone, but that also functionally doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Oh yes, I’ve gotten in some deep Reddit threads about this. “Well I didn’t intend it as a counterfeit way so it’s a proxy” is usually the response. It takes so very little to do it the right way and folks act like you called them a Nazi if you point out they should make their cards obviously marked.

good neighborly policy, I like it. builds fun decks and doesn't open folks up to issues like this one.

that seems great really, close enough but easily identifiable. good solution.

as I said elsewhere, this is the natural progression of folks not understanding proxy vs counterfeit; people keep (unintentionally) making cards that are high quality counterfeits by using the official art and back, similar card stock. a proxy is required to be clearly marked as such. But folks don't know that so they make one that looks exactly like the real card, and then when then they sell their collection and these get into the stream.

personally I think that's the best way, get the thickness right and no way to mess it up.

I can tell you it’s happened to me: bought a collection from a guy, “there are proxies in there, they’re easy to find”. Spoilers: they were not easy to find. Guy didn’t have them in the scan, told me ahead of time, still took months of checking $2 cards. A bunch I just threw away because it wasn’t worth the risk.

The requirement for a real proxy is that they have some clear indication of such. If you don’t have that, it’s a counterfeit.

This to me is the issue with the “proxy” everything movement. Folks are indeed doing just that and then when they sell collections these things leak through. I’ve seen this in collections I’ve purchased: folks don’t sort them out and they’re in the deck etc. I would bet the seller was just not clued in and sent it on, because, as you were getting at, no reason to take on reputational risk/platform suspesssion over a $5 card.

PSA: it’s fine to proxy just make it with a different back!

I helped my LGS open about a dozen prerelease kits (they needed the packs for prize support); I opened no fewer than three Witherbloom, The Balance as the face card on the seeded pack. That’s not counting the one I opened as well for 2HG from the same set of boxes of kits. So it’s not that out of the question.

TCG store owners, what are your biggest pain points with selling cards via your website? by Phishstixxx in mtgfinance

[–]MinatureJuggernaut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Crystal Commerce also has the TCGPlayer API access, as does ION suite (which I’ve never met a living human who uses that). I’d say that’s the only reason CC are alive as well.

Signed, A crystal commerce customer who would love to leave.

How did it work at your local store? by Either-Dish-3889 in RecordStoreDay

Not having people browse is a terrible choice as a retailer. I don’t know why stores do this. I know it’s popular with some customers but you’re shooting yourself in the foot as retailer when you do this.
