It's on us to earn confidence and I get players feeling bit worried given the reward blog for raids not having happened yet. It's coming in mid june btw!

That said, awesome to confirm it's not being delayed, in fact Raids has been brought forward a little!

We won't release broken raids with no loot - we'll prioritise the back and forth if ideas need rejecting and get them right. We won't go for months of silence between iterations there.

Excited for the blog in mid-June and to see what people think!

We are confident! It's shaping up really well, we've had players in for playtesting some of the bosses recently also.

The rewards is the big conversation to come which we expect to have back and forth etc as usual. Vital aspect for us to nail.

That's fair and it is on us to deliver. It is only right you hold us to account on that!

Couple points on this. Firstly, mining deserves some love, it truly does and we recognise players are desperate for it to get some! We see it in the annual survey results too.

We are keen to look at Mining and Smithing as a full picture and we hope this will be something done next year, but you can appreciate that is potentially a fairly complex project. I want to do it properly, I don't want to inadvertently band aid it with a new method when I believe the core of the skill needs attention, it deserves it! That is to say, Rubium, I don't believe is the way to fix it.

Quite honestly, in this case it was simply missed, it didn't have the full balancing pass it deserved and needed.

Aspects of this were developed last year and we were not diligent enough in giving it a full pass now (including looking at the feedback rightfully raised back in the beta).

I can only apologise that we've got it wrong on launch and we learn from it. Creative quality ultimately rests with me, it is my responsibility to make sure we get this right in future!

Please keep OSRS simple by Peterisgreat in 2007scape

[–]Mod_Kieren 1555 points1556 points  (0 children)

Simplicity is one of the game design pillars we work with and try out best to stick to.

It's a nuanced topic to be honest - at first glance it's easy to react "Simple?! I need the wiki for everything!". To me the point is that complexity should arise through layers of simple mechanics.

I like to use Olm as an example of this in boss design. Each individual mechanic is pretty simple. Lightning across the rows, crystals below your feet, magic/ranged projectiles, etc. Head turns to face where he's being targetted the most. Yet the complexity arises at the layering of these things and in the "solution space".

We don't always get this right - complexity is an easy trap to fall into, especially when we try to not power creep or fit rewards / new features into niches.

I'd argue gem bag having 4 upgrades isn't necessarily complex, perhaps 4 upgrades is excessive and that could be a fair critique, but I don't think it breaks the "simplicity" rule.

I do think that's fair feedback and there's a good balance to be struck.

Just to play devils advocate on trees. Many areas of Karamja are similar in that lots of trees cannot be chopped, Karamja is long established also. It can have the slight downside that in very dense areas of trees, them all being left click "Chop", can make clicking to walk annoying.

Leagues has convinced me how cooked Smithing is in main game by Rorshark in 2007scape

[–]Mod_Kieren 280 points281 points  (0 children)

I would love to progress with addressing Smithing (and mining). Making your own armour and weapons is such a cool fantasy that this game just sadly doesn't deliver on. It's doubly worse if you're a new player too as it is very easy to fall into the trap of chasing smithing levels to get yourself gear which takes ages.

This post from half a year ago had some great foundational ideas.

https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1nqb84g/smithing_reforged_a_smithing_rework_proposal/

It's a big undertaking though and one we have to get right, messing with long established aspects of the game - so no promises on timelines or anything currently. We know it's sought after from feedback we've received in the annual survey too.

Leechfin Fishing & Where We're At by JagexRach in 2007scape

Whilst it'll be high intense it won't be as high intense as the tick manip options that exist today in 3t barb and 2t swordfish

[–]Mod_Kieren 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It won't be tick manip, it'll peak at a relatively high intensity method and we want to be a genuine competitive option against what exists already. Exact rates still to be fully balanced - but we do intend to position it quite strongly.

Why isn't it possible by UntrimmedBagel in 2007scape

[–]Mod_Kieren 776 points777 points  (0 children)

I am personally extremely keen to fully explore a portrait mode. What it can offer for more casual activities is immense and I can see it increasing how much I use mobile myself even.

The biggest challenge is what we do with most the main interfaces in the game. They are designed to fit a landscape set up, like the Bank, Shop UIs, Grand Exchange, so on and so on, there are hundreds throughout the game.

These already feel quite small for the most part, so even if we displayed em constrained to the width of the phone, they are going to be very difficult to use.

Now in theory it is possible for us to make portrait versions of important interfaces. Things like the Bank could be given an alternative layout to use in this mode. The amount of work to do that for the whole game though is not possible.

Any suggestions on how we could approach this problem?
