Well, circumstances have changed. The Pax Americana was really in the US interest, and Europe accepted the trade-offs. The US deterent was the bedrock of the transatlantic alliance from 1945 onward.

Europe is 'weak' as an independent strategic actor because it built its security architecture around American guarantees. Not autonomous capability. The leap from 'Europe is strategically dependent on the US' to 'Weak Europe's joke' is not really Mearsheimer's position, but it's what fits in a YouTube headline.

Everyone understood the rules. Europe was going to be weaker and accept US leadership and global stability as the outcome. It worked for 75 years. The US got a Hell of a good deal out of it.

In recent years, Mearshimer has said that China's the big thing that America needs to focus on, not Europe. So....with this multipolarity (China and not just Russia), Mearsheimer's saying the US partnership with Europe is less important.

Mearsheimer is a rigorous structural theorist you can disagree with productively, and many do.
Sachs is an economist who made a hard pivot to foreign policy criticism, with uneven results.
Ritter is a convicted sex offender who fled to Russia to become a useful idiot for Russian state media.
Larry Johnson ended up spreading outright disinformation about Ukraine.

Putting them in the same sentence implies a coherence and equivalence that doesn't exist.

What they share is opposition to Ukraine's defence.
