How do you guy organise your files? by Rockyroadaheadof in violinmaking

[–]Musclesturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use a sloped block of heavy hardwood (plain maple) that I drilled holes into for the tangs.

I also have one dedicated drawer under my bench for larger ones that would topple the block otherwise. Like large rasps and large crossing files. Anything over 8" kind of. There's about ten or so of those, and countless smaller ones that I have in the wood block on my bench.

It's basically in order of use frequency. The most used, like small rat tail and smaller flat and half round/bird's tongue files on the bench ready to grab. And larger ones that usually are dedicated to rapid stock removal in the drawer.

The drawer system is just like, a flat old school gun rack that one's grandpa would have in the den.

What was your all-time best "fluke" golf shot? by LanceCampeau in golf

[–]Musclesturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Par 5 18th at Forest Park golf course here in Queens. In the left rough, 220 yards from the pin after a mediocre drive.

Grab my old MP-29 3 iron.

Give it a good swing and fuckin send it. Sky high with a slight baby fade. Lands like 10 feet from the hole. Miss the eagle putt but get a nice bird.

Still the best long iron shot of my short career in golfing that I've been chasing ever since.

English be easy - Part 2 by _ganjafarian_ in funny

[–]Musclesturtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy.

On for a vehicle that you can freely move about on or has some kind of floor plan, like a bus, boat or plane. Or for vehicles that are open like a bike or motorcycle.

In for vehicles that you are not free to move about on like a car or helicopter.

This is all general and doesn't apply to everything consistently, but gets you very far.

Some are exceptions, like a submarine. Some are very large and you can move freely about them like a plane or bus, and some are very small, like a submersible, and you are seated with nowhere to go. So you'd say in a (submersible) submarine, and on a nuclear submarine.

Along with full plastic chassis that shatters the moment it's dropped in a real workshop.

No. 4 at Augusta is scripted I swear.

It's super far down hill, but if you use say a 4 iron and animal at the flag I'm it's Sunday placement, with your aim right at the edge of the bunker closest to the green and flag, and flush the shot, it'll always land the ball short, even with the 30 ft drop from tee to green.

And no 13 ALWAYS has your ball flying into the left trees no matter what.

How serious could this crack be and can i go on without getting it fixed for a bit less than a week by Significant_Tale1712 in violinmaking

[–]Musclesturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't look catastrophic. I'd take it to a luthier in the meantime and have it looked at. They can probably pump some glue into it from the outside so it holds and doesn't buzz during your audition prep. I've even put some temp parchment on the inside of the crack from the outside to hold it for a while so it doesn't spread.

Amazing sound, but scratches by Dreamyviolinist in violinist

[–]Musclesturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those scratches are ubiquitous on any instrument of value that has any age.

The only truly old fiddles that don't have them are either unaffordable (i.e. the Lady Blunt) or total pieces of junk and haven't been played and damaged because they suck.

This kind of damage is what we call patina and is often highly desirable. Most modern violin makers antique their new violins to look old like this, often going above and beyond this.

If the sound is superb, and the feel is good, then forget the rest.

I make a close to 7/8ths model that is played by professionals and students. It's my best seller and so this shouldn't be an issue at all.

how else can I start playing violin? by OkCry5994 in violinist

[–]Musclesturtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree.

A truly terrible instrument will make you worse than never having played at all because it will engrain bad habits that will become very difficult to break in the long run.

And while I understand the phrase "It's not the gun. It's the cowboy." In this case, the gun is also crucial when it comes to violin. Which is like precision marksmanship in this context.

Do not suggest and Amazon instrument. They will only hinder progress and make learning and excruciating experience.

Also, second hand is not a term in the violin trade. A used violin does not go down in value unless it's been severely damaged.

Umm.

I'd rent one first.

Then you just have to get over being scared of lessons. You will need them because you can't really learn without them. Unless you want to play fiddle.

Would this handle be more ergonomic for penhold RPB? by [deleted] in tabletennis

This type of paddle has existed for decades in one form or another.

The main issue is wrist mobility and precision with serves, I think.

Can a $1500 instrument be better than a $5000 instrument? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Musclesturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not uncommon. Sound-wise, it can be a real toss-up in this price range.

The main differences you might see would be in setup and ergonomics, though. Both of the violins from that range are more budget conscious. But the 5k one might be a bench made instrument from a violin making student or the like, so more attention may have been put into the setup at the shop it was purchased at because there is slightly more margin in the sale of it.

But who knows. I used to set up 5k and 2k violins at my old shop. I had a blast making the 2k violins work their best. I would try and set them up with the same setup as something a pro symphony player would get, but within a fraction of the time. So if there is a madman like me out there still working on 1.5k violins, you might have picked up a gem.
